*in an alternate universe in 2008 (no Chase for the Cup)* : "Coming off turn number 4... it will be an exclamation point on a phenomenal season this 99 team has had, as Carl Edwards wins his 9th race of the year and he is your 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion!"
The only stat during the 2008 season that Jimmie beat Carl in was poles, and "Chase" points earned (which doesn't mean much in my mind since that is only a 10 race span, not even 1/3 of the whole season).
Actually, Johnson would've still won had the scoring format been the same as well. Remember, a win in 2008 was worth 10 more points than a win between 1975-2003. And yes, it would've made a huge difference. The regular non-chase standings would've been 16 points in Carl Edwards' favor. With the 2003 scoring format, it would've been 4 points in Jimmie Johnson's favor.
@@superbird4351 Oh, okay. Yeah, the points format changed quite a bit back then. Sometimes, it got really confusing, because of the decimals of points and etc. I mean, the basic concept was the same from 1948-2003, but up until 1975, the format changed quite a bit.
@@tomdalfonzo9959 As best as I can describe it was for a few reasons. One being the introduction of the Gen 6 and the questionable move of the alining themselves with FRM over Team Penske. Two, the lost of stable veterans Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards. Three, the continuous downward spiral of sponsorship. Four, Jack Roush not really coaching young drivers very well. And finally, not managing there teams well and cutting cars left and right.
Yeah, Carl should have won this one. But he made some terrible mistakes towards the end, and was facing Jimmie Johnson when he was at his best. Still makes you go what if. And the fact he could have had the Nationwide championship the same year just makes it worse.
Lady Luck always seemed to bite Carl in the NASCAR Geico Coca Cola Xfinity Busch Cup Series. At least he was able to win the 2007 Busch Series title. But Lady Luck screwed him out of a Cup title.
Missing Rings: Kyle Busch 2008? Busch had maybe the best first season with a new team, racking up eight wins in just absolute domination of the entire Cup Series, only to be screwed royally by the BS Chase.
I know I'm 2 years late, but Busch still would have been 250 points behind JJ and Edwards without the chase, he was great but completely imploded the late season
Being a Carl Edwards fan this hurts.

You got that right
Carl had every stat better than Jimmie other than championships earned during the season (Carl's 0 to Jimmie's 1)
Didn't have consistency though.

Carl Edwards: the king of missing rings
I mean, there's also his predecessor, Mark Martin...
roush drivers are being cursed of missing rings.
The King of Missing Rings is Kevin Harvick with 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2020
Hurts to see this. Carl should be in the HOF. Possibly would’ve won 2 cups under the Winston points.
And he would have won that Championship if they had the playoffs
Missing Rings: Kyle Busch 2018
Missing Rings: Denny Hamlin 2019
Missing Rings: Martin Truex Jr 2018-2019
Missing Rings: Ross Chastain 2019
Missing Rings: Brett Moffitt 2019
Missing Rings: Christopher Bell 2018-2019
all of those come down to either not having the best car on the crucial moment or pit mistakes, theres not much to analyze
Carl Edwards 2005-2016
I never would’ve thought that I would end up being at his last NASCAR race. 2016 Homestead was wild
That Edwards scheme is 🔥🔥👌👌
Carl Edwards was robbed of so many opportunities to win a Cup Championship just like how Roush was not able to win a 3rd Championship after '04.
Missing rings
2009 Kurt busch
2009 Carl Edwards nationwide
2010 Carl Edwards nationwide
2019 Denny hamlin cup
2003 dale Jr
2000 dale sr
The fact that Carl Edwards could have walked away from 2008 with two rings with a few different scenarios and instead walked away with zero is so sad
Now please do Missing Rings: Ricky Rudd 1991 or Dale Jarrett 1997
When are you gonna do the 2016 with the current playoff format?
He already did that one already.
@@ChaseFanNo.9 no he didn't
Eventually, school comes first and those take a metric shit ton of time to do the research.
either way we know Jimmie will still win that championship, won a race in round of 12 and 8 then won homestead
The pain of these videos 😞
You should do the pre-Latford system champions if the Latfofd system had existed then. (1949-1974).

I meant the 1949-74 champions under the 1975-2003 system.

Edwards lost the championship by 69 points... Nice
I went to the Bristol night race in 2008.
I think it would be interesting if you did a Missing Ring episode on Kyle Busch. Maybe 2017.
There definitely needs to be one for Kyle Busch 2008.
I would say this was the second to last chance for Roush Racing to get a third championship.
How and why did they just fall apart after that essentially?

Carl was an athlete’s athlete.
Losing one championship is heartbreaking, but losing TWO in the same season is just brutal, especially for Edwards fans like me
He lost the championship in 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2016. Not just 2 times
I was at the first texass race he won when i was 6
