Theoretically, without the chase, this would've been Carl's first of 2 chamionships. Chase and playoffs means final 10 race performance is more important than being consistently strong all season. Sad. Just sad.
Your point was encapsulated in the finish at Homestead in 2016. A late-race caution that was questionable at best led to Carl's wreck. Great driver. I wish he'd won it all at least one time. I also wish we saw people like Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon get properly rewarded for great seasons. We could be talking about Harvick on the same (or higher) level as Tony Stewart, and it's possible Gordon could have been "seven time." And that's not to take anything away from the guys who benefited from a cruddy points system. They did their jobs according to what the format required. But be crown the best driver from the season champion. That's why we have a points system.

Carl won 9 races that year. Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart all never went past 8
