Thank you. I did not know the origins of Ran. I have seen only a few Kurosawa films, but Ran is my favourite, and sits very happily at No. 6 in my top 100 after Casablanca, Le Regle de Jeu, The Godfather, Vertigo and Breathless
Happy to say that I have most of Akira Kurosawa's Samurai movies in my collection, plus "Dersu Uzawa". "Ran" is one of, if not THE BEST, films I have ever seen, but totally tragic. Especially the beginning, middle and ending. Lots of pain to go around for everyone. And one of the biggest blood spurts this side of "Sanjuro", from a woman who totally deserved what she got. "Dersu Uzawa" is visually stunning, and has many intense moments of personal exposure and defiance. A must watch for all Kurosawa fans.
An excellent video, but i do have a small quibble. No mention is made of Lady Kadai, the wife of his eldest son, and Lady Sue, wife of his second son. Both women's families were destroyed by Hidetoti; Lady Kadai schemed to bring ruin, while Lady Sue sought refuge in forgiveness. Not the exactly the main theme of the movie, but a very important supporting plot.
This is one of the saddest films I've ever watched. I've never even seen King Lear but I knew that this movie was Kurasawa's telling of the story using his own culture. I still have my original VHS copy for the 1980s!❤❤❤
Yes, Seven Samurai is an all time great film. Still, I believe that Ran is just as good. It comes down to Kurosawa being an outstanding filmmaker. Add Rashomon, Ikiru, Yojimbo and Kagemusha to the list of his many excellent movies.
During World War II, Akira Kurosawa worked as a director and scriptwriter in the Japanese film industry, creating propaganda films that glorified the war effort:
Ran is unforgetable.
Unless you slept through most of it.
My favourite film. The cinematography is just so good
I have loved this film for many years...Amazing, poetic, and tragic.
Kurosawa is the master of the moving image, his vision is miraculous. Ran is beyond perfection.

Ran is cinema peak.
Excellent essay on Kurosawa's Ran. Easily one of my favourites of his. A spectacular moving picture.
100% agreement from me as well! "Ran" is a spellbinding film.
Yep. This has always been my favorite Kurosawa film

I adore Kurosawa's films
Epic movie. One of the best for sure.
It has some stunning sequences.
the soundtrack is one of the best ever.
Very well done. I saw Dersu many years ago. I had no idea Kurasawa made it! IT was good.
Beautiful film.

Bravo, great video
certainly his most beautiful

Movie goes hard!
This is also my pick for the best Kurasawa film
Oh wow youre new, Well I'm proud to be one of your first hundreds of many to come subscribers
This is the sadest movie ever. The movie is the bleakest of human condition.
Every shot in RAN, is an art masterpiece just like Lawrence of Arabia
To be honest I didn't watch the full commentary.
I just saw the title
And gave a "Thumbs up"
True.
I've always been partial to Throne of Blood, but then again, I've always been fascinated with Macbeth rather than King Lear.
Awesome sauce vid
You didn't talk about Dreams, I think it is one of the most beautiful films made.
Rather strange to make a whole feature about Ran without mentioning the most interesting character, Lady Kaede, unforgettably betrayed by Mieko Harada
There's a lot of war in it, but it's not about war.
Dodescaden is a brilliant work of art. His first color film.
Oh no no.... no....

I mean, Kurosawa himself considered _Ran_ to be his best film, so...
It's a great film but in scale and mastery, Bondarchuk's War and Peace is the greatest film of all time.
Yojimbo and Throne of blood are pretty good.
Idk if sayoig it's all in service of "Asking a question" is either accurate or helpful tho.
Ran is a great film, but it can't match The Seven Samurai, or Dersu Uzala imho.
7 samurai is such an amazingly good film

My favorite Kurosawa film depends on my mood at the time.
My personal top 3 are Dersu, Hidden Fortress and Sanjuro
High and Low is a little better too, I think. What a masterpiece.
As my father always says. The world is mad. Or in Norwegian verden er gal
its not even top five kurosawa - and ran is a masterpiece
During World War II, Akira Kurosawa worked as a director and scriptwriter in the Japanese film industry, creating propaganda films that glorified the war effort:
It's not. It is great though
Great film. The only thing that bothers me is the old man make-up on the main character... It looks so silly
Anyone with sense knows Kurosawa's greatest work is Seven Samurai
for western propagandized short attention spans LOL
Shots fired.
Nah.
"Ran" is pronounced like "Han" in Han Solo, not like "tan" or "pan". If you're going to make vid about it, at least learn how it's said.
Tell that to Lando.
What? If you're going to tell people how to pronounce words, use the phonetic alphabet. Or at least choose better examples. Yours are weak af.
Why don't you make a vid as good as this probably you why do people say such things
