The fifth part of the full voting of the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest, without commentary and in this part the votes from: Norway correcting its votes United Kingdom Austria Spain
They were actually approached for this job, but they turned it down. The UK were asked as well, and for the first time turned it down. Finally the Netherlands stepped in at a late stage.
Mocro boy If I remember correctly (I was 14 years old) After the end of transmission, the members of the spanish jury appeared on TVE screen to speak about their impressions of the winning song like usually done at that time. They told to the Spanish audience that Yes! if they had wanted; they would have changed the result because there was no presence of a notary or affidavit. But nobody present proposed something like that. They would be dishonest, emphasized a member of the jury. I remember it was bitter, but a good example of honesty.
@@kicogz Ηοw could there not be a legal representation in there? On the other hand changing the result would be a common crime with many accomplices. People would start to talk after the contest. It'd be still a huge scandal for Spain. Each and everyone would have fear of each and everyone in that jury. Doing the right thing was one way street for them and good they saw it this way. IMO they shouldn't have voted for the Israeli song in the first place. There were many other better ones.
irondasgr We are talking about a time with a few contestants and no televote. Just a simple jury elected by the national broadcast system of each country; with a common EUB rules (different ages and different professional status) That jury was free to vote whoever it wanted and was no subject to control according to the explanation of the spokesman to the spanish viewers. I know that years later a notary kept a record of the decisions. So that's what I remember. If they had wanted, they would not have given any point to Israel. And Israel would not win.
One of the greatest moments in our musical history. We look forward to welcoming our European friends to Eurovision 2019 in Tel-Aviv in May, which promises to be a huge celebration of love, friendship and music.
A wonderful moment, Israel deserved their host victory. Hallelujah is one of the best ESC winners of all time. I love Betty's sportsmanship after Israel were called by Spanish spokesperson which is what everyone needed to hear regardless of the points mark. The 2 hosts struggled a bit but they still did very good from my point of view. "Vienna what are you doing here?" Quality quote! xD
"Hold it!" Lol XD One of the biggest thrillers ever. Israel keep soaring back, jumping right into the foray in the final stretch and fighting neck-and-neck with Spain. And of course they had to draw out the excitement as much as possible, with Spain one point in the lead before they had to give their (final) votes. It's a good thing Israel overtook them or Spain would have had the lowest winning total ever. The atmosphere of this contest was so jovial, and Israel's song is a true classic (though I personally prefer "Su Cancion", I would not have liked it to win). Fortunately this was the last contest with performance order of points, as Daniel and Yardena got notably confused due to poor telephone lines. On a personal note, I love that the UK jury gave 10 points to Luxembourg, an underappreciated song that was clearly popular in the audience.
A little mistake in the last jury: Spain gave Portugal 6 points, and not 10 points, because Israel got those 10 points.... No one noticed??? not even Mr. Frank Naef!
It was 1975 that the 12 10 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Voting system came in In 1973, they used the 2 jurors giving 1-5 points each, which was used 1971/2/3 - and in 1974 the 10 jurors 1 vote each had its final use, ABBA winning with 24votes
I simply think that Betty (Spain) is a nice person, and just happen to win and lose with same spirit, try see her actions while the winning song is being performed. Yes, the Netherands hosted the following year (as far as I remember the last time that the winning country didn't host the following year), this was due to the date which happen to be an Israeli public holiday, and therefore Israel didn't even participate.
rafi ba It was both, actually. Israel gave up the hosting rights, but then when the date fell on their Remembrance Day, they declined to compete at all. That's the only time in Eurovision history that a country has not defended its title.
The official site says, quite correctly, that the Netherlands hosted the 1980 contest. Israel won the 1979 contest, but they didn't take part in that contest in 1980.
what a confusion at this particular moment of the votes, it certainly had an impact on the stress of the israelian and spanish singers. But finaly israel won it, with a very good song, and a marvelous second place for spain.
I love this Eurovision Song Contest. They did really good job on hosting this. However, I think he said "six points" for Portugal and "dix points" for Israel. There shouldn't be double 10 points lol XD
Micha Marah (Belgian entry) didn't like the song she had to sing at the time. But 44 years after, she released in the summer of 2023 for the first time a single and video clip of "Hey nana". You find it here: th-cam.com/video/z1c9hrJBdVg/w-d-xo.html
A ver escuchen bien la votación el jurado español le da 6 votos a portugal no 10 la que se equivoco y dijo 10 fue la presentadora el fallo fue q el jurado español no la corrigio
At this time they were still holding on to the old way to do it, which was announce in performance order. From the next year, 1980, they introduced the ascending order.
It was like that back then. They went through the voting out from the running order list and not like you say here, starting with 1 - 8 and 10 and 12 points. That started first in 1980 or 1981. You could see someone in 1981 was not aware of the changes either.
Uhm.. the spanish jury gives 10p to Portugal and then Israel.. Even though I think he says 7 points to portugal, she announces 10p and the scoreboards gives them 10..
LCScampi because at that moment she didn’t know who had finally won the contest. In later interviews she expressed very sour memories of that event, having been relegated to the second place by her own country!
“Vienna what are you doing here” lol
Spain should have hosted 1980, because they were 2nd
They were actually approached for this job, but they turned it down. The UK were asked as well, and for the first time turned it down. Finally the Netherlands stepped in at a late stage.
The EBU could have helped Spain to host the contest.
When Spain was a honest country ...
Why honest? They couldn't change their results anymore.

This was one of the most nail-biting votes ever!
And so sad for Spain, 'killed' by their own jury.

A nice relieving round of applause when Luxembourg finally got a high score of 10 points from the uk, which they deserved.

Together with 1988, 1991 and 2003.
What happened to Frank this year? Looks as if he was slightly confused 🤷♂️
Slightly?

Et le Portugal a dit six points en Français
Pardon l'Espagne a donné 6 points

chainatprachatree Sad that Spain only hosted once :/
That was not the case! Israel could not afford another host

Spanish song was so much better...
En faite, le jury espagnol a donné 6 points au Portugal et non 10 points
Exactement
Spain didn't want to win at all... you can tell by the singer's reactions (and the man next to her) throughout the whole voting...
+Javier Lopez i noticed that
and she was haapier with the israeilian victory
Javier L of course they did! They were just very shocked to have emerged in the table after they had started so bad
@sushifornico yes... the old system had not the escalating anxiety that current system does...
When possible winners didn't blank each other out....
Well, there was no media back then, social or otherwise, telling you what to vote for.
si nos hubiera votao portugal!!!!!!!!!!
If portugal had voted us ( spain ) with... 10 points...we had won.

Spain gave 10pts to Portugal (58->68) and Israel (115->125) ?????????

Why does Betty look so pleased when Israel get lots of points, and so unimpressed when she gets points I wonder?

So Spain gave to Portugal & Israel 10 points
