Making a Small Watch Box

- Hi! I made a box just like this last year but did not include a voiceover. This time I did one. The box is made of jatoba and can hold 6 watches. The joints are 1/2" finger joints and the hardware is from Brusso. The interior lining is from Flock-It.

The dowel trick is brilliant! I will have to try that on my next build. I've gotten so turned off to hinges because of that, I've been making boxes with lift off lids. Nice work!

Was originally used in the 70s to repair where screws had worked loose in chipboard. Fell out of favour for the easier blum type cabinet hinges.

Hey good job on your box. When I’m making my hand cut dovetail boxes… I wrap a 1/4” pad with textile fabric and then I tuck it into each corner with a credit card. Sometimes I’ll wrap a piece of veneer with leather and then set it in the box. Both are a different take on our crafts. Always think outside the box… pun intended. Keep up the good work. Also when cutting your top off on the table saw, I always put shims in after the first two cuts. The shims are equal thickness of your blade taped in place. This will prevent your box from collapsing on your third and last cut. I made the mistake once and learned quickly.
Clever trick with the dowels for the hinges. Had the exacct same problem about a month ago and brute forced the screws into the wood which of course left marks on the hinges - oh well, thanks for the tipp and great build overall!

You, my friend, are a master of your trade. I could watch your channel all day. Btw, so smart to insert dowels for the hinges.
You could try tapping the holes for the hinges with a HSS tap and then use machine screws instead of wood screws
Not a bad idea. I think the screws are #5 maybe even #4. They’re pretty small.

It sure is. The top could use a re-surfacing. But I think I’m going to make a new , smaller bench to take its place. I’ve learned some things about using my shop space better and a smaller bench is one of the things I need.
I like you have left the riving knife in place though the crown guard would make the saw completely safe :)

When using dense, hard woods like Jatoba, using insert dowels as you have done works well
Another possibility is to tap the holes and use machine screws. They will hold very well in hard wood.

Thanks Jerry! That’s a good idea. I would probably do that if I had a few of these to make at a time. Finding the right screws in small quantities can be a pain.

@@parillaworks Hi. I don't have much knowledge of screw sizes but 6-32x1/4 is fairly small, is it not? I found this in a Phillips head, brass, countersunk head for about $0.21 at Fastenal. SKU 0179809. I think they had over 1100 selections under the heading Machine Screws. Their site let me put as little as a quantity of 1 in the cart. I'm not sure on minimums or freight charges but you may want to check them out. Search Fastenal. Hope this helps and good luck. Wood and watches. Seems to go together well. I love watches but can't afford the expensive ones. Again, nice build.
The to solve the screw breakaway problem is to use steel screws first then replace them with brass screws at the last minute. This is worked great for me for years.
That’s what I hoped would work. But I still twisted two steel screw heads off the previous time. Maybe it was a bad batch of screws or I was a bit too impatient.
I make a similar latch out of wood and it mounts flush like an inlay. I'll send you one if you'll do a build video with it. It installs just like the Brusso latch.

Great build. Love how it turned out.
In the past I’ve used a steel screw of the same size to run into the hole first, cutting the threads, then wax the brass screw and haven’t had any trouble with it.
Brusso supplies a steel screw and the heads were still twisting off. I also tried drilling larger pilot holes but that left me with weak threads.
parillaworks yah I noticed you were using Brusso for the latch, wasn’t sure about the hinges. That’s really surprising. I haven’t worked with Jatoba before, so that’s good to know, and a great solution to the problem.

Great job and attention to detail. I too dislike the flocking process. I recently made a large armoire in black with six compartments flocked. I don't consider the flocking real durable and have found no real answers on the web as to how to clean it. Don't forget to wear a respirator as the strands of fiber can lodge in the lungs like asbestos.

How do you work out a mitre saw takes up too much room in relation to it’s worth. It has the smallest footprint of all woodworking machine tools. It is also the most versatile. Ie it cuts all angles up to 47.50°. It also cuts all compound mitre angles. It is also the best tool for trench cutting. If you want to trench cut on a table saw you have the bother of swapping over to dado blades. It also allows swapping out blades to cut pvc and aluminium. It also allows you to remove cuts measured in thousands from the end of a piece. Its an essential piece of kit.
All I said was it takes up too much space for the uses in my shop. It doesn’t find its way into many of my projects outside of breaking down rough lumber. I’m trying to downsize some aspects of the shop and the miter saw is one of the first to go.

Hi John, I have a question about the Brusso hinge mortise template. It calls for a 3/4 OD guide bushing but the only one I can find is too tall. The Brusso instructions say that you need to shorten it to just less than 1/8 inch. Did you have to do this or were you able to locate one somewhere that would work or is there another solution? Thank you for your time and I really appreciate all of your videos that have helped me further my knowledge of woodworking.

Hi Greg. Yes I did have to do that. I think I had a set with a few 3/4” OD bushings. I used a hacksaw to trim one down to the correct length. And that one is now my designated Brusso bushing.
Awesome build, it turned out beautifully! I'm planning on making a watch box for my boyfriend for our one year anniversary in June, wish me luck! I've done a little bit of woodworking (mostly smaller projects with resin, like table tops and coasters), and I want to incorporate resin in my box. How long did it take you to perfect making finger/dovetail joints? And what tips can you give for someone with little experience making them?
The biggest tip I can give is to have extra material that is the same thickness as your workpiece. This way you can really dial in the fit of your joints. I bought the Incra Ibox so it’s a bit easier to get things dialed in but I still keep rough cut my material a little long so I have those test pieces. The other tip I would give is to always have a fresh backer board to prevent the grain blowing out the back. Good luck and feel free to reach out if you have any questions :)

Great video and project as usual. I am building something similar and am curious what exact size hinge did you get. I’m doing 1/2 material with box joints also.
Thanks! I typically use the CB 302 from Brusso. They seem to work well for what I do. The 303 coils fit on 1/2” stock but I wouldn’t be comfortable with how much material is left. The leaf is 0.42” deep or wide, so you don’t have much left and that could be problematic.

Can you tell us how many Cms you cut etc?
Great build John. I noticed in one of the final shots you flocked the dividers as well. How did you accomplish this? Did you flock them outside of being installed in the box, or did you place them and flock them in place?
Thanks! Last time I flocked the dividers and box separately but it didn’t work out as great as I wanted. This time I flocked the dividers in place. The dividers are a snug fit and I secured them even more with a few dabs of CA glue. This worked out much better, though there is a lot more surface area and odd angles to worry about when doing the flocking.
Beautiful work there, mate. Just out of curiosity, why did you leave the top of the box proud rather than plain. Was it a design choice or some other reason?
That was a design choice preferred by the client. He didn’t want a recessed panel. And it’s not really possible to do it flush as the panel will expand and contract with seasonal humidity.
Jatobá, is no the same as cerejeira (brazilian cherry), diferent trees, toughness and color. but realy great work!

Great build and video! What dust collection were you using on your small Dewalt plunge router?
For the Dewalt router in the little table I’m using the standard Dewalt dust port that fits that router. It’s a separate purchase, maybe $15 on Amazon. Then I have a rockler hose connecting it to a regular shop vac.

how durable is flocking? i'm planning to make a watch box, but i'm debating whether to leather wrap the interior or to make life easier and flock it. My worry is that my watch bracelets will rub on the flock while going in and out, releasing flocking material, which might then get between the links and other crevices.
I’m not entirely sure how durable it is. I have the same worries and only use it when requested. An alternative might be some adhesive backed velvet material. The best part about the flocking is not having to worry about getting into the corners.

What dimensions do you end up with for the inside spaces for the watches? Planning out my own watch box but not sure how to account for watch size
Hey Steve. The pillows I use are usually 2" x 3" so I'll shoot for something just a bit bigger than that. Sometimes it's 2.25" x 3.25", sometimes it's 2.5" x 3.5". And I use 1/4" material for the dividers.

Was the partition grid glued in any way?
The pieces of the grid had a small amount of glue to hold the pieces together. And the grid itself was mostly a friction fit with a few dabs of CA glue to tack it in place.

There are a lot of online stores that sell/make them. I got mine from branding-irons.biz. I have the flame versions which means I heat it up with a torch before branding. There are also electric ones that are typically retrofitted to a soldering iron, though they are more expensive.
How does the latch work?
The top half has a spring lever that gets pressed to release it.
Curious, Where did you get the watch pillows for the box?

Anyone have any dimensions for a watch box this size? (A box for 6 watches)

Please consieder not wearing a ring or a wedding band when working with power tools. If the blade catches the ring it can yank your finger off.

Great video. However, to all craftsmen, please quit using Brazilian woods! Even if you think you’re getting it legally...you’re not. It’s horrible what has happened there and between America and China, we’re 95 percent of the reason Brazil is destroying all their precious forests. Builders, contractors and craftsmen are the biggest culprits in our Country. Please be conscious and don’t purchase Brazilian woods.
*I’m just a regular guy living in small town Illinois who likes to build, no affiliation with any environmental groups. It’s just the right thing to do and for us to be conscious of, not purchasing Brazilian woods!!
