very happy that Jeff Goldblum name dropped Erroll Garner. Much respect. He was Such a phenomenal pianist. Garner should be the same kind of household name that Monk and Brubeck are.
Simply unbelievable what this guy is playing. Every time I listen to his music it’s a jaw drop. No one in jazz history ever got close to him in my humble opinion.
He is in great form here, even though he is already looking physically unwell at this point. He died of a heart attack on 2nd January 1977, and had also been struggling with emphysema. He was only 55. Thank heavens he was a prolific recording artist and thanks to TH-cam, those of us who were too young to have heard him perform live, get a chance to see and hear what thrilled audiences all over the world. Will always be my favourite jazz pianist.
Could not have written my feelings any better than Autumn Leaves. His playing makes me happy, grateful and actually cry from his leaving us too early. Could you just imagine how many more albumns he could have released.
People like to talk about his grunting but in this video its more like he is grasping for breath. He's not exhaling he's inhaling with his mouth wide open. Having to sit for hours in a three piece suit under stage lights cant be good for anyone's health regardless of lifestyle.
a favorite son of Pittsburgh, so happy to see music lovers discovering him here. this past weekend, on our annual Pittsburgh Piano Day, a baby grand was wheeled out to garners grave in Homewood cemetery, and a local pianist played a nice arrangement of Misty.
I am 78 and listening to EG since age14. Very hard to judge but I would place him at the tippy top with a few others like Tatum and Horowitz. I listen to him each day
Ça rock Erroll for ever!
Holy shit, I just saw the Jeff Goldblum Questionert and just from that I got recommended the video. So two things: 1 - How insanely spooky the algorithms are getting. 2 - How insanely good the algorithms are getting
A lot of people probably searched for Errol Garner exactly while watching that Colbert-Goldblum segment on YT (and so did I). So no wonder it soon starts recommending this same clip most played afterwards.
You have to read what George Shearing said about him. He was one of a kind. There will never be another Errol Garner. This rendering is so restrained and infectious. Brilliant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP Errol
Documentaries rarely mention him among the jazz pianist heavyweights ..yet many jazz pianists cite Garner as their favorite and influence. Erroll Garner was a beast in the game. And right there in the center, to compliment his flavor u got some very tasty sazón on tumbadora(conga)..the great Buyú Mangual! Uff..Don't get much better than this. -Guaño
There was another video of the same concert of him doing . "for once in my life ." It's on my favorites but it's been blocked in this country. I need to see this video. Please somebody help me.
@@errollwithtwolsplease1038 I want to thank you so very very much.I was so worried that I might not ever see this video again .Its better than before it's so nice and clear. What a great musician and his fellow band members also absolutely fantastic. His music fills my heart and soul with complete Joy thank you again so very much.
I only saw Erroll once, in an outdoor concert. What with crowd noise it wasn't the same as in a club or concert hall. BTW When Erroll was at the height of his popularity in late 50's, early 60's, he did 2 Sold Out concerts in Newsrk's Symphony Hall. His manager took out an ad in NY newspaper that Erroll would provide free bus travel from Carnegie Hall to Newark and back for NYC ticket holders. Did Keith Jarrett ever do that? 😊
Anyone know where I can obtain the complete video from this 1972 "Studio 10" session? There used to be another great clip on TH-cam from the same venue, but it has been deleted.
@Hydrolight How I wish there was such a thing! No, just a simple search - Erroll Garner" "Teatro 10" - brought up, amongst other things, this: Martedì 19 dicembre 1972 - Il Focolare Radio - TV. Scrolling down the page you find the video. So, there is no treasure trove, I'm afraid.
Seems to available here in higher quality, but it's only accessible in Italy: www.raiplay.it/video/2018/04/Teatro-10---Puntata-del-07051972-055a5115-9514-43d1-838f-6108765b4278.html If someone could retrieve it and share that would be great!
Chissà se di quella indimenticabile serata si riesce a ritrovare l'incredibile versione di "for once in my life", la più bella, veloce, creativa che io abbia mai sentito.

How have I never heard of this man before?? This is incredible. Thanks to Jeff Goldblum for sending us this way (via Colbert). Wow!
this guy is a revelation in the world of music

"only 55" ...young for Jazz, ancient for Rock : 27 being age of choice.

Came here because Jeff Goldblum said this was one of his favorite songs when he was on Stephen Colbert!
🎹 No-one touches Garner for originality... not Peterson...not Bill Evans... no-one! Garner rules! And his playing kept evolving with the times. 🎹
What a high class audience, they clap twice after the most genius parts of Erroll's improvisation.
No, the applause is probably canned, like a laugh track. Italian tv was notorious for fake applause..
@@milansimich4055 Well, in that case the Italian TV had very good taste.
Jeff sent me.
A musical genius that walked among us and soared above.
He might have been the greatest improviser of all time-including classical music!
I love the expression on his face anticipating that the audience is going to get what he just did: the impossible accord at 04:06.

Just the best!! I love the way he introduce the tune, so powerful and tasteful!
I would love to have heard him play moonlight sonata
One of this worlds great geniuses.

Love Jeff Goldblum, thought I had heard all of Earl Garner!! Obviously not!!! Great pianist!!!

Erroll Garners Concerts By The Sea is a beautiful classic from the late fifties. Check it out!!🙏💞🎹😮
Around that 3 min mark so inventive he takes chances and even when it doesn’t quite work you know what he’s after beautiful
the correct name of the show is TEATRO 10 😉

Faaaaantastic!
La trasmissione si chiamava "Teatro 10" (non "Studio 10")
Nella stessa serata suonò una versione incredibile di "for once in my life" che era su youtube fino a qualche tempo fa e poi è sparita, purtroppo.
I also got here via Jeff Goldblum.
Now, Goldblum and Colbert fans, who was the physicist Stephen mentioned? Anybody?
Richard Feynman
Ernest McCarty on bass
