I grew up living across the street from Mitchell "Booty"Woods. He played trombone in Count Basie's band. He toured a lot, but when he was home I loved being over his house while he practiced. I didn't realize at the time how much of a historical musician I was in the presence of. I got to meet Count Basie as well. The tour bus was on our block and the whole band was there at Mr. Woods house. Great memories.
Basie is the origin of true swing. If you can imprint it on your soul, you’ll be way beyond most of your peers. (There’s tons of Basie out there.. absorb it all.)
Anyone clicking the thumbs down on this should be pitied, not despised … for he who, at age 56 still lives in his mother‘s basement and sits at his fathers moldy old desk, still wearing his pajamas at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and clicking ‘dislike’ on genius music, should indeed be pitied.
Very crisp video and sound from Stockholm, 1962. Featuring the Brass Section. The details of this performance are an endless fascination, from the groove of the rhythm section and the way Sonny Payne plays sticks on his high hat during Basie's introductory piano solo to the way the unison muted trumpets break into harmony on the head. Piano: Count Basie Alto Sax: Marshal Royal and Frank Wess Tenor Sax: Eric Dixon, Frank Foster (arranger), Frank Wess Baritone Sax: Charlie Fowlkes Trumpet: Al Aarons, Sonny Cohn, Thad Jones, Snooky Young Trombone: Henry Coker, Quentin Jackson, Benny Powell Guitar: Freddie Green Bass: Eddie Jones Drums: Sonny Payne.
Killing and smoking and so damn cool swinging with swagger! And Basie doesn't even play the last note of his famed three note tag. He just raises his shoulders as he lets the band hit it for him instead. Smooth baby, smooth!
Oh yeah, we b in school .. the original groove merchants .. & one to be … but my eyes transfixed on Freddie Green. Ed Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green & the Count himself .. THE engine room of that mighty swingin' outfit. Been collecting their 50s/60s albums like .. 4ever🤗. Note Thad Jones. He'd shoot off in a coupla yrs 2 form the almost as mighty Thad Jones Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.
>>Comments from Liner Notes by Chris Sheridan: "An unusual soloing sequence unfolds. First are the trombones exchanging short sequences - Henry Coker (4 bars), Quentin Jackson (4), Benny Powell (8), Jackson (4), Coker (8), Powell (4) and Jackson with the last word (4). Then it is the turn of the trumpets-three sequences of Al Aarons (4), Sonny Cohn (4), Snooky Young (4) and Thad Jones (4). “And that was the brass section,” Basie exclaims at the end, with just a hint of pride."
Back in 1961 or 2, my high school prom committee wanted Count Basie and his band to play the prom but we couldn't do it - he wanted $8000. Very cool HS in Chicago though.
For a long time Black bands had to travel abroad to get a fair hearing and be appreciated. It caught on later in the US when Europeans began to show the US what was missing.. Thank God.
Count Basie and Duke Ellington had full stages of the best musicians, incredible band leaders and innovators. 0:50 drummer had the whole audience laughing
The Guitar Man ,has My Vote for outstanging preformance ,THAT. JAZZ GUITAR HE IS PLAYING ,IS DIFFICULT IN THAT BIG BAND SETTING❤ THANKS ❤ JOHN BARNETT ❤❤❤
Is that Sonny Paine on drums? What was the hiHat thing at the beginning?😱. Also doing the stick click like Buddy Rich!!! Got to hang with Ellington’s band with Rufus Speedy Jones as a young teen. Man! Really love this..
Butter! (Quentin Jackson) The men on top. Check Snooky out while they are out front.....thats how it should feel. And Sonny.....sheeeeeeeeiiit. I have it on good authority that Sonny once took the "O" off the count basie banner and pissed in count's brief case because he wanted a raise. Buddy had chops.....Sonny had it all and then some...he invented the "falling down the stairs" fill. (see live at newport and corner pocket at the sands).
The swingingest of all absolutely - I tried to sit still during a Basie number and failed outright. They must take Basie to the moon and beyond to be enjoyed by the entire universe.

Amazing! Drop dead amazing. To think I envy you doesn't even begin to say it
'Teasured' memories ❤❤
It's 2am, and I'm in a zone with Count Basie and his amazing, orchestra 2024
It's the best place to be!
There's no band that swings as hard as the Basie Band. Magnificent.
I was five when April in Paris hit, and I got it, even then, and ever since. Grateful for this offering.
talk about the power of great music to change your mood ❤
Wow, what a nugget of Jazz history! That’s my Uncle Sam Jones on that Bass! Great to see this 😊
That’s Eddie Jones on Bass…Sam Jones was another great bass player…. I worked with Eddie in Paris…. Great guy.
The best big band ever!!!! And still is today...
Big band non plus ultra !
Oh MAN but was that great!
Signature Basie and smooth as glass.
I have always liked Swing...But Count Basie made me LOVE it! This Band is soooo smokin' HOT!
I saw Basie and the band in Sheffield in 1974 on his European tour and been hooked on jazz and swing music ever since. He is the best!!
Count Basie and his great band killed it!
The crime is that something this incredibly perfect has so few views..... and 21 people who went out of their way to dislike it!
Ikr, it's one of my most favorites. I'm learning to improvise on my trumpet too, I'm trying to learn the solos here
@@austinhernandez2716 Good for you, young man!

@@udih5297 Listen To "Blues for Stephanie" from Count Basie's band in 1979 North Sea Jazz Festival.
Mr Jones + Mr Payne = power swing!
Unbelievable!!!!
I love these short snappy solos such a dope way of getting a varied range of sounds, tremendous as always.
Such class and effortless swag!
Basie and his band at their best!
Truly!!
The best, the best, the best...the best players as an ensemble....one instrument...and the best arrangements!!!!
Agreed!!!
Musicianship combined with showmanship makes a classy band.
The band that I listen when Iwas a child.
One AMAZING trombone section!
O mi God, what a concert, what a video and sound. Basie, man, the greatest blues jazz band of them all.

Thank you to the Swedes that kept the VIDEOTAPE! No blurry kinescope here! 625/50 B/W in all its glory!
This is an amazing piece of music! Thanks for mentioning all the names here!
nobody mentions Freddy Green who make the band swing!!!!!!!
Its crazy, but this band just seem to get better every time I listen to them, yes the BEST big band of all all time, genius territory
man sonny payne! Always hip and swinging!
Sonny could wake me up from a coma with that bass drum. Gives me chills.
& Freddy Green on guitar, Thad Jones on trumpet & Frank Foster on sax who composed "Shiny Stockings" 'What a cast of musical genius & passion
Unfortunately, I was there the night that Basie sacked Sonny. I don't know what he was on, but he was aweful. Very sad.
Only saw Sonny Payne once with Basie..He really swung the Band and his energy was outstanding!!Circle Star Theater in Northern Calif about 1974?
Wow...absolutely GREAT!!!!
Mi!!!!! Medicina para la cuarentena con esta Bella Musica.....

Going to say it right here. I would love for bands like Count Base to rediscovered by today's youth and replace the garbage they listen to now.
THE BEST!! GREAT!! Eddie Jones on bass.
Me, too, LOVE the bass!

Man...great we can find experts on youtube. Thanx for those precisions. Now I can put a name on each of those talents
don’t forget freddie green on guitar who held it all together!
Out of this world! Alan in London
can't even begin to imagine how much it must have cost Basie to keep that crew together.
It’s an investment, some money must have been made back. Both with album sales and ticket sales.
@@MrHestichs These were not session musicians. D'oh!

Look at Sonny Payne at 0:50 !!!!!! Great !
Не перестаю восхищаться как маэстро ласкает клавиши piano
Love this period of the Basie band, w the one and only Sonny Payne on drums!
The greatest - all of them - not a single weak link
Can not believe the gorgeous sounds
Cool number! Nothing like the ole' time Jazz hits. This new stuff today the songs sound convoluted!
Superb
My man "steady Freddie "
YESSSS. Freddie Green !!!
When single-handing a yacht up the Irish sea to Scotland I had The Count as company and swung all the way.
70 Years ago swing -- NEVER OUTDONE. Shook Basie's hand at the Regis Roof in NYC -- what a gentle gentleman.
Una de la más maravillosas bandas de jazz que hubo, para mí que soy fanático de Basi la mejor de todas.
4:19 second trumpeter from the right hahahaha
Count Basie and Duke Ellington had full stages of the best musicians, incredible band leaders and innovators.
0:50 drummer had the whole audience laughing
I was fortunate to see them live in the early seventies. Not certain, but believe it was the same drummer. He blew us all away.
Love the melodic tweaks and the the facial salutes! 3:57
What a great recording of a great assemblage of musicians!
Ever trilling, so mind blowingly cool. Toot those horns winds a freaking gale,LOL.

Incredible, and with humour...!
One of the best Jazz Sax.

Classic Swing!!!
Greatest swing rhythm section ever: Basie, Jones, Green, Payne.

Thank you so much for sharing this!! Love this period of Basie and the "Atomic Band"!!
Second that‼️
Love the Basie Band !!
Not only no other drummer...but no other human alive could swing like Sonny Payne!!
Jag gillar verkligen hans musik
What a band.
thank you❤️ありがとうございます💻
So smooth they make it look as tho the only thing easier is breathing.
Magnificent!!!!
Now that boys and girls is how the swing gets swung!

Казалось бы ничего особенного - просто блюз в умеренном темпе... Но невозможно оторваться!!!
Real deal musicianship, no fools.
Impressive!!
If you hit the Mute button eight times in a row this is the video TH-cam recommends.
Stupendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Odd thing about Basie....every time I hear a tune, I hear something new and different in it...

where did you get that info about what sonny did i cant find it anywhere
Yeeeeeeeah
Step step triple step
What people don’t realize is that when this band gets going it’s rock concert loud, and nothing’s plugged in, not even the guitar.
And MERRY CHRISTMAS 🌟🌲🌀🍇🍇☘️👉
All Star TRumpet team feat. the one and only Thad Jones!
I guess it's just the tensions of the recent election, but it somewhat seemed like the soloists were arguing about politics.
Aaron Van Nynatten I love your comparison ! This band is the greatest!
As for politics ..... Cannot imagine Mr Trump ever listened to Jazz.
0:44 it's music humor!))
I would say anybody who is up for it can enter. Everybody is a winner so relax.
I know a guy who was bummed when The Count ditched Papa Joe for Sonny. I love Papa, but Sonny was The Man too.
Getting better though. I can't dance. Somehow this gets my bones moving.
WAAAY COOL HOW HE BRINGS THE BRASS FELLAS OUT ...........
Yeah, Baby! 🎶🎵🎶
With Basie, it was always the little things...like Sonny Payne, at !:03
High Class Act!
