    Jeff Young rarely gets mentioned among MD's best guitarists, but his playing had lots of feeling IMO. Wish he would have done another album with them.

    My list:
    1. Marty Friedman- His playing is insane and really unique in and outside of Megadeth
    2. Chris Poland- Love his work in Megadeth, very jazzy, love his solo work and his Ohm stuff too!
    3. Kiko L. His playing is super cool!
    4. Chris B- His style is interesting, robotic sounding
    5. Al Pitrelli- Love him in Deth, TSO and Savantage
    6. Glen Drover- Has his moments, solid playing
    7. Jeff Young- Thought he was okay in Megadeth, not too bad of a player

    Chirs Poland is far more complicated and unique than anyone else on that list. They would tell you the same thing too. Listen to Poland's solo stuff. He really shines on that stuff. Better than anything I heard from Friedman. Jeff Young should stick to playing in cover bands.

  • @brandonjackson5865

    Marty, Poland, and Kiko are my top three. I agree that Marty brought something to Megadeth that nobody else has. I’ve heard rumors that Poland is on some RIP demos of some songs and possibly gave Marty a direction or skeleton to follow . I’m not trying to take anything away from Marty. Tornado solo is all his and his solos on Countdown and Youthanasia are incredible. I think Marty and Kiko elevate Dave’s playing and writing. I just think Megadeth benefits from a lead player who has some exotic flair, that style just lays so good over staccato palm muted rhythms and the twisting lead on the wrapped strings rhythms of Dave’s.
    How about a list of the best Megadeth drummers ? My top three wouldn’t change much as they were in the same line ups as my top three guitarists, Nick, Dirk, and Gar . As incredible as Kiko is, and he is, I think Dirk is underrated, he might even be the most talented Megadeth drummer of all time. He plays the back catalogue better than anyone else, he is a machine and is fast approaching Menza’s seat as my favorite Megadeth drummer. Let’s not forget Chris Adler would count as a Megadeth drummer by your rules here and he recommended Dirk, I’ll admit I was a little disappointed that Adler wasn’t going to remain with Megadeth, but the first few videos of Dirk with those damn headphones behind the kit, I soon realized this guy could be the absolute best drummer they’ve ever had and you know what he actually looks pretty cool with the headphones on .

      I have heard the rip demos with Poland's solos. They are not similar to Marty's solos at all
      Poland's style just didn't fit with RIP at all

  • @lptremors882
    @lptremors882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Im right there with you man! In my opinion the Friedman and Menza era has to be my personal favorite lineup of the band. everything just clicked and fell into place. But Kiko! he's got to be an EXTREMELY close second in my book! Love his work on Dystopia and on this new single!

    • @brandonjackson5865
      @brandonjackson5865 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Man, I tend to go back and forth with Poland/Samuelson and Friedman/Menza I'm on a Poland/Gar kick again but coming up real fast as a duo is this Kiko/Dirk pairing, these guys, just saw them live, I'm telling ya they ain't no joke, real deal, this upcoming album is going to vault them right there with the other two I have a feeling

    • @brandonjackson5865
      @brandonjackson5865 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danzemacabre8899 preach on my man I have been blown away with Dirk and Kiko and I don’t see many people who take the time to appreciate just how awesome Dirk is . Dirk may be the overall best Megadeth drummer of all time, he’s the only one who’s been able to do Gar’s material at the incredible live speeds they play at some times, the dude is a phenomenal drumming machine. The old songs sound better with Dirk on the kit than anyone since Menza.

  • @MsJoeg
    @MsJoeg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great video! I'd tie Chris Poland for 1st with Marty because when you hear Chris solo, you know it's Chris. When it's Marty, you know it's Marty. IMHO the rest are generic shredders adding nothing to the songs. Fast and bland. At least by comparison.

      That’s a controversial top three, but I’m ok with it. SFSGSW is better than peace sells or killing to me head to head. Jeff is definitely the absolute most underrated Megadeth lead player. I just think that Poland’s unique style over the first two albums beats out Jeff by a hair. Jeff has to be in any serious Megadeth fans top four he belongs right there in the mix with Marty, Poland, and Kiko. The dude can rip.

    Fantastic list my friend! Love to see you so passionate about your favourite band (they are my favourite as well!) My list would differ from this but still great to see
    My ranking is based on their output or solos in Megadeth and not on their overall skill is a guitar player as all of them are brilliant. This was a really hard ranking!
    My picks
    Marty friedman
    Chris Poland (I would also include his solos on system has failed which are absolutely fantastic. I love his tone and vibrato. One of the most unique players I have ever heard. Have grown to love him)
    Al pitrelli (one of the most underrated guitar players in my book but just the one album with Megadeth. His solos are fantastic throughout the album though I wish some like on the title track were longer. He also plays some killer renditions of Marty solos while live like on use the man)
    Kiko loureiro (outstanding player and has some brilliant moments in Megadeth but I think I prefer him outside Megadeth a wee bit more. I find him a lot more jazzy and unhinged on his solo albums and on angra albums. No gravity is one of my favorite instrumental metal albums)
    Glenn drover (a guitar player that I have grown to like! I wasn't a huge fan initially but his solos are super fast and they bring a unique atmosphere which cut through the dense sections of united abominations. Like you this album is one of my favorite Megadeth albums and is massively underrated)
    Chris Broderick (might be surprising to see him this low. Another player I felt a bit tied in Megadeth and not as free with the creative license I would like him to be except on some songs like how the story ends. When live, I felt he plays Marty's solos note to note almost which is impressive but I wished he added his own style more to them)
    Jeff young (shines whenever given a chance on so far so good so what except maybe in my darkest hour, I don't like his solo on that a lot. He was deemed to be highly skilled and talented but he was a bit underutilised on the album in my book)
    Would definitely love to see a ranking of the drummers!

    Love the shirt. Been a Mustaine fan for years. Been watching the shows from Europe like Graspop & Hellfest. Dave is killing it. Actually, the entire band sounds great & how about the new video? It's quite speedy & intense ;). What the heck, I'll even agree with your list! Marty is great with great hair. Def making a name for himself in Japan. My fav live album too! The song "Trust" probably isn't a lot of people's fav song but I really like it. I've noticed Dave always has it on the set list. He must like it too. TBH, Dave & I are literally born 12 days apart 9/1 & 9/13 & same year. Yes, we are both weird & quirky. Would love to have a conversation with Dave because I'm certain he's well versed in "everything"!

    Hard call man..
    I put Poland/Friedman tied..
    Kiko based off his work on Dystopia (could move up to the tied spot at the top with new music).
    Al Pitrelli
    Young
    Drover
    Broderick
    I put them in order regarding actual work not just their ability.. Broderick is very very capable but his solos were not interesting at all musically.. 3 albums and really I don't have any solos from him I remember it's just lots of notes and sweeping.. His best stuff was on Super Collider regarding actually having solos that stuck with me a little more.. I like the guitar screams and stuff on Burn!..
    I prefer Drovers original solos.. And he only had 1 album appearance.. But his 1 appearance musically isn't as strong as Youngs the songs are also just stronger on SFSGSW.. Pitrelli is the strongest 1 appearance guitarist..
    What's good about Kiko is he appeals to thr Poland fans, the Marty fans and enough of the Drover/Broderick sweeping to include that group of fans as well.. And then there are his very own fans that he's grown with his work on Dystopia and soon to be SDD..
    I disagree with your list purely on Broderick.. He has no rememberable hooks to his solos.. When he did it felt like Dave had to come in and say.. Look the loads of notes thing is cool.. But can we try to create a melody with those?.. 44 Minutes.. Thats maybe his best actually rememberable work on that album.. I can't remember a single other solo from him on that album.. Much the same with 13.. Better with Super Collider but the songs underneath weren't as strong riff wise..
    We all then got to see how weak an outfit Megadeth was by having Shawn Drover and Broderick there.. Because as soon as they left energy and creativity returned.. This new zeal to create heavy music with the ability to do well at the charts and have melody and hooks much like the 90s stuff...
    See I can remember the solos from Poland and Marty even on songs I haven't listened to in a while because they got the melody and created something that sticks and you remember.. The fact you can play the solo to Tornado in your head note for note is a testament to what I'm talking about.. Can you do the same with Broderick??. If you're honest with yourself.. The answer is no.. You can with Young and Pitrelli.. They had just 1 album.. I can remember Dread And The Fugitive Minds solo.. I can remember Warhorse.. Losing My Senses.
    I don't rate the album itself all to high but I do rare the way solos are presented and what must be achieved with them to stick with the listener.. Each solo in the new song sounds like something from past guitarists.. We got very Poland parts near the end.. And some Drover.. We got a Kiko dystopia like solo to start with.. A Broderick style one as the second and a Marty/Pitrelli type one in the middle.. Dave did the same with his leads.. There was a more modern Mustaine solo from something off the last 20 years.. And then very early sounding stuff like from Peace Sells with that demonic The Conjuring type solo he does near the end around the breakdown.. Its fucking sweet man.. It should please very one and cement this lineup as one of its strongest since RIP musically.

    All of them amazing players, but:
    7. Al Pitrelli - not much of a technical player
    6. Glen Drover - never left an impact on me
    5. Chris Broderick - ear piercing tone
    4. Jeff Young, Mustaine wrote the more memorable solos on the album
    3. Kiko - not unique enough
    2. Chris Poland - the whole legato stuff gets kinda pretty old quick! Listen to the RIP demos with his solos, his style didnt fit in
    1. Marty Friedman was involved with the making of the Risk album!

    I'm curious why you chose to omit Dave. Most Megadeth guitarists have only contributed solos, whereas Dave writes the lion's share of the riffs. No inclination to compare him as a lead guitarist though? Or perhaps having by far the largest body of work makes it unfair? Regardless, I'm going to include him in my own ranking. It's really hard for me to divorce the solos from the songs they come from, which is why Chris Poland is where he is, though I'd also say his solo in Black Friday is better than anything anyone below him on my list has done. But then again, that's also my favorite song, so it's hard to say.

    Please get yourself the japanese versions of the first albums. The remasterd version you have are all s#it. It's not even just remasterd, they are definitly overdubbed. The japanese versions are still unremasterd and sound way warmer and fuller. Especially "Rust In Peace" is a mid 2000 digital remasterd s#it show - which is now the only one you get when you buy a new cd. I urge you!

    Yea to each his own i guess. Marty played on some of there best songs i think mustain was out of his prime with broderick and kiko so the songs are not as good.

    I know I'm in the minority but I thought Rust in Peace was a major disappointment when it was released. I was a huge fan of Jason Becker/Marty Friedman before Marty joined Megadeth and I was super excited when I first heard that he had joined Megadeth. I expected some Dragons Kiss type creativity and heaviness mixed with some Megadeth attitude and thrash, but with the exception of a couple tracks Rust in Peace failed to deliver that. Marty has some brilliant solos on Rust in Peace but unfortunately that album signals the beginning of the end of Megadeth for me ..I have to go with Chris Poland even though Marty is a better player because Poland is on Killing and Peace Sells, and that's when Megadeth was brilliantly vicious.

    Ranking Broderick above Poland is bloody blasphemy.
