    I think the purpose of Zava, story-wise, is to put Richmond in a position where they realistically could win the league, and still allow for a rough patch that is solved by Ted’s Total Football plan in Amsterdam. If Zava wasn’t there winning games at the start then disappearing, then there would be no way the club could be challenging for the title at the end

      Furthermore he was the catalyst for Jamie's final step(s) in his arc. Jamie was the only one on the team that didn't buy into Zava and was annoyed so much by him that he willingly set his ego aside and started training directly Roy outside of their normal "work hours". While he was certainly already on the way to being a better team player/etc., it really crystallizes for him after he's (indirectly) challenged by Zava.

      Zava was also included as a call out to the crossover fans of both the show and the game in that Zlatan is one of the great football characters.

      He also serves as a motivator for Jamie. He wants to become Zava levels of good, and then when Zava leaves there a talent vacuum of sorts that allows Jamie to step up and become an amazing football player while implementing all he's learned the past three seasons.

    For all the misogyny and stupidity George Cartrick displayed in episode 1 and as a pundit, he showed some class by refusing to injure Jamie. He's still a jerk, but her respects the game. Not sure if you caught this, but Mae straightening the picture of Geronimo was an homage to the final episode of "Cheers". In the last scene of the last episode, Sam straightened the same picture, which was a tribute to the character of "Coach". (The picture had originally been in the actor's trailer and was added to the set after he died in the third season).
    Also, Jason Sudeikis in the nephew of George Wendt, who played Norm on "Cheers".

    The actor who plays Beard recently did a Reddit AMA. Apparently Ted not going to Beard’s wedding was a reference to their real life friendship. The show was created by the two of them and their best friend. One day Beard gets a call from the other guy one night saying “hey I’m getting married tomorrow! I know it’s last minute so it’s totally fine if you can’t make it.” Beard was filming something at the time so he couldn’t make it. It’s like an Easter egg but instead of a callback to another episode it’s a call back to their real lives.

    Zava and Shandy really don't feel like fluff or filler to me; this season has had a running theme of "getting what you think you wanted, but realizing that it makes you miserable", and they fit right into that. Shandy harkens back to Rebecca's advice to Keeley at the end of last season ("Hire your best friend"), which, as it turns out, can be a terrible move. And Zava? Well...they knew in advance that he was as mercurial as he was talented, and that he would never fit into the Las- excuse me, Richmond Way, but he did put them in striking distance of the Champions League, so they were willing to risk it. If it weren't for Ted and "his" total football, though, the rest of the season would have been doomed.

    I think the thing about seeing Ted do that dance that we first saw him doing with a previous team in a video when we were being introduced to him, is that it reminds us that he's had teams that he's meant a lot to before. If we'd watched him and Beard coach that last team and form friendships and relationships with those players and colleagues, we'd have probably wanted him to stay with them. He's a bit like Mary Poppins in that way, coming into people's lives and leaving them as better people and moving on to a new adventure. Except unlike Mary, Ted gets to have a child of his own as his home base.

    A thing about Rupert's ending: In season 1, part of Rebecca's anger was that she felt she was the only one who saw Rupert for the monster that he was. Here, we see the entire stadium, and later the entire sports-reading world, seeing exactly who he is, and calling him out for being an absolute wanker.

    One of the little moments of this episode that I loved was the callback to when Isaac tried to make the shot during practice, and instead the ball hits the window and breaks it right behind Higgins. When Isaac gets the ball to take the PK in this episode, Higgins throws his arm out in front of Mrs. Higgins, protecting her from a potential errant shot from Isaac. I don’t know why, but I loved that so much.

    I think Shandy was really important for Keeley’s development. Not because she learned when not to employ your best friends, but because she showed that Keeley’s success wasn’t just that she had a friend in Rebecca who offered her a job, but because she’s smart and capable.
    She built on the opportunities she was given, she created opportunities for herself, and she worked really hard and became a success because of it.

    I think Rebecca knew that her and Sam were at two different points in their life that were too incompatible and complicated and and when she found a connection with someone closer to her age who had also been cheated on and has a young daughter who could do with a strong female role model then it does fit well

    • @joeypotter6051
      @joeypotter6051 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Agreed. Sam and Rebecca have that thing where they were very attracted to each other, genuinely loved each other, but are just at such incompatible points in their lives. He's way too young, he's got so much growing and experience yet to have, she's so much older, it just would never have worked out long term. I think the nods we got this season was to both of them being like "damn I still really like this person, what a shame it'll never work out" but they genuinely wish the best for one another.

    I think Zava was there not only push the team but push Jamie and in doing so brought Jamie and Roy closer together and with regards to Shandi pushed Keely to understand the hard knocks of taking responsibility as a boss but is also pushed the Jack story as well

  • @ElizStewart80
    @ElizStewart80 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I actually really liked that they didn't resolve everything because it lets us imagine what's next for some of these characters. For example, in the span of 3 years, Keeley has gone from dating Jamie to dating Roy to dating Jack and now maybe she'll get some time to focus entirely on herself because she deserves that. And Roy has self-worth issues which hopefully he's working on with Dr. Sharon. (But you can't bring that kind of stuff into a relationship, and we shouldn't want him to.)

    • @joeypotter6051
      @joeypotter6051 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly! He needed to work on himself, he's giving Keeley space while he sorts out his issues, and is able to be more independent of her. I think she's someone who has defined herself by her relationships for most of her adult life. And he's someone who obviously gets a bit clingy and smothering (see season 2) and is easily threatened in his relationships. I know a few people have complained about the bar fight but I think that showed us that while both Roy and Jamie have made huge progress, the path is never linear, and everyone is going to backslide and default to old habits when they feel threatened. Also, Roy was the one who wound Jamie up by smugly saying "It was a month ago, mate". Jamie's a 25yo guy, he's going to retaliate with something he knows can hurt Roy. I loved that they ended by going for kebabs, aka to Roy's "church". So they're still besties, and I think if Roy had immediately restarted something with Keeley, that could have been jeopardised, regardless of their intentions. So I'm glad everyone has space to grow up for a while :)

  • @ulfsam-mule-son9726
    @ulfsam-mule-son9726 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Not only is "Father & Son" as the closing song an apt metaphor for one of the main themes of the show, the lyrics of the last chorus make me understand better why they wanted to end the show - they have done their best to try and teach us the important things, and now they need to let us go off on our own to live our lives, because if fathers keep talking at their sons for too long they eventually turn away and stop listening. If the show stayed too long it would eventually feel preachy and its message would be diminished.
    "All the times that I've cried
    Keeping all the things I knew inside
    It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it
    If they were right I'd agree
    But it's them they know, not me
    Now there's a way
    And I know that I have to go away
    I know I have to go"

  • @Cakeyyama
    @Cakeyyama ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I was fine with the Keeley/Roy/Jamie ending tbh. The easiest solution would've been "Oh, just have her be with Roy again" but honestly, it's about Keeley not really needing either of them, and can just be cihll/casual with it! Maybe in the future something happens, though!

    • @mr.stuffdoer8483
      @mr.stuffdoer8483 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think Keeley ending up not being in a relationship is honestly good for her character. She’s kinda bounced around a lot, seeing her decide that she’s better than simply going for the opportunity with a sexy person is nice. And Roy needed a rejection to understand he still needs to improve. And Jamie is just forever a prick.

I'm from the school of social work, so I'm working as a therapist, and I only watched Ted Lasso because a fellow therapist recommended it to me - and I think I've seen the series like 5 times since I first watched it last summer. It's just so well-written, and so amazingly psychologically healthy; if I didn't mostly work with kids, I'd recommend the show to every one of my clients. I think that in the end, Rupert is the only character the show really follows who sees essentially no growth; not everyone makes the type of change Jamie does from season 1 to season 3, but everyone else grows and changes, usually for the better. I think I look at endings in a different way from most people. The Keeley/Roy/Jamie for example. I don't think it needed to be tied in a pretty little bow. Why? Because their lives keep going after the show is done, and Roy still had some issues to sort out, hence Sharon.
    To me, it seems like people tend to look at finales like that world is deleted from existence afterwards or something, therefore it all needs to be tied up and resolved. I think Ted's note on Trent's book says it quite well. The show might be named Ted Lasso, but it wasn't really just about Ted's journey, and their stories don't end just because he left.
    I'll agree on the Rebecca/Sam/Dutchman thing. I'd prefer if she just left the airport and that was it. Again, no need to show her with Sam.

    One subtle throwback to season one, Episode 4 'For the Children' Rebeccas knows what Rupert really is, but few outside Sassy and Ted see him for him. Most others see the money and glamour and think what a great guy.
    Today, everyone knows the man Rupert really is, and to be serenaded off the pitch, by the crowd of his one true love, now he knows everyone knows and they will always know.
    The true downfall of Rupert.

    I think Nate left West Ham because he didn't like how Rupert behaved, especially how he treated women, for instance, when he set up the boy's night and wanted Nate to be with someone other than Jade. Also Rupert kept vascillating in what he wanted Nate to call him - Rupert or Mr. Mannion. I think Nate realized he didn't have Rupert's respect. And he saw that Ted did still respect him, even after he left to go to West Ham.

    Nate leaving West Ham to me was because he chose love over fame, Jade representing love and Rupert representing fame. Plus at the end I think Roy made him a part of his coaching staff, as Roy said "Nate's good at what he was s**t at."
    Sam and Rebecca's relationship most likely concluded when Rebecca saw the way Sam interacted with the head chef at his restaurant. Plus the Flying Dutchman's daughter was played by the same girl that played young Rebecca.

    I think you got way too hung up on Sam and Rebecca. They were together for 2 weeks and told no one (at least not until the day it was over). I think she realized there was no way she could have a future with him. He has his whole life ahead of him, including the years she wasted with Rupert. If she held onto him, the would always be in different places in life. Rebecca deserves to be happy and find love. The Dutch man was a nod to the possibility. Her true happiness was in the team and the group of people she chose to surround herself with, but that doesn't mean she can't have romantic happiness as well.

    The Beardisode had 2 major impacts on the bigger story. It introduced us to Renee, which becomes a big deal when both Rupert and (more importantly) Nate are able to sneak into the stadium because of him. It also, in my opinion, was the catalyst to Jamie's dad going to rehab. When we see him in S3E11, he's clearly been there for a little bit. I think him getting beaten up was a first - he and his buddies are used to doing the beating - and getting, as Roy might put it, battered properly (especially after getting hit by Jamie as well) was the wakeup call he needed to get sober. It's the last time we see him before S3E11, so we don't have any other explicit turning point for him - I'm assuming the Beardisode was meant to serve as that turning point.

    As for Rebecca and the Flying Dutchman, I really wish they hadn't brought him back, because a good part of what made their night together so special was that it was this random encounter that would happen once and never again; fixing them up together at the end of the show just takes that away. (But I have to disagree about the Sam/Rebecca ship - it was doomed from the start. Yes, they made each other happy as people, but she owns and runs the team he plays for. Continuing their relationship would be Rupert levels of unethical, unless and until _Sam himself_ insisted on playing for another team.) On the other hand, I think the Roy-Jamie-Keeley thing was kind of heavy-handed, but it needed to happen to establish that Keeley had moved on from both of them. So I'll give them that.

    • @joeypotter6051

      Not to mention the age gap between Sam and Rebecca. Not that it's necessarily a deal breaker (my parents have an 18 year age gap, but my dad is older) but it could cause conflict down the line. A friend of mine is currently engaged to a guy who, when they met, was dating a much older woman (like, he was in his very early 20s and she was literally his mother's age). But he always wanted to have a family and kids of his own, and that wasn't going to be on the cards. So now he's with my friend, who is the same age as him, and they have a gorgeous nearly 2yo daughter. I like to imagine Sam ending up with someone who is a better fit for him, personally. But I think Rebecca and Sam will always have a mutual admiration society and always feel deeply for one another.

      What made the night together so special was how well they connected, not that it was random. And hell, if I randomly had an encounter with a person I previously had a random magical night with, that’s just goddamn fate at that point.

  • @stevenrod100

    I understand you might not like Rebecca ending up with the Dutchman, if for anything just because you want her and Sam together. I think this is better though because Sam was never meant to be her endgame, but someone who helped her to heal after Rupert. That's why last episode she was holding not only the green matchbook but also the plastic army man. Both Sam and Ted helped her heal in their own ways and prepare her to find and be open for this new man. I think it's also why they subtly hinted that Sam was getting close to his friend at the restaurant. Things like his dad telling them both about how much Sam talks about them. Their smiling glance while watching You've Got Mail was more them acknowledging that they lived that situation and appreciate it for how it helped them grow. Rebecca is now building a family with a good man that she wouldn't have had if she got back with Sam, but he is most likely on his way to building a family of his own as well.

    Regarding Ted not being at Beard’s wedding-Brendan Hunt said it would’ve been jarring to see Ted at the wedding in one shot and then on the plane landing home in the next. He said some friends aren’t always there for each other, even in crucial moments like a wedding, but that doesn’t make their friendship mean any less.
    I was disappointed with this choice too, but the more I thought about it the more I thought it was interesting that they chose to write it this way, because sometimes that does happen. I missed out on my high school best friend’s wedding a couple of years ago, and I felt sad about it because I wasn’t invited and I felt like it was an indication that we’d drifted too far apart. But I got the chance to see her a few months ago, and my worries were put to rest when she said she ended up eloping because the pandemic was ongoing and she wanted to play it safe. Even though we don’t talk much anymore, we still care very deeply about each other and I know we’ll always be friends. And it’s the same with Ted and Beard.

    • @joeypotter6051
      @joeypotter6051 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agreed with Brendan too. I did make it to my best friend's wedding (and I had to fly halfway across the world for it) but I haven't seen her since 2015 now, and I've never met her son. That doesn't mean I love her any less, it means I can't afford to fly back to the US just now. (Admittedly that's unlikely to be Ted's problem.) But ultimately I think Brendan saying that Beard wouldn't have minded, he would've understood that Ted couldn't make it, and it didn't diminish their friendship at all, made complete sense to me. Another of my best friends is getting married this year and I'm not invited to that one -- because she's also eloping. She's never wanted a big wedding so this is perfect for her and I don't mind in the slightest.

    @reymondcastro8354 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In hindsight, I don’t think the temporary characters didn’t add any value to the story, much more to the characters’ development.
    Zava existed to show that culture wins over talent. While that seems a slight to what happens to sports nowadays (i.e. bringing in as much superstars to a team as possible), but it is also needed to tell the story that AFC Richmond do not need a superstar to achieve their goals. That they just need to believe in each other, and trust that everything will work out in the end (the same way Ted talked about these all throughout the series).
    Shandy was necessary to show how Keeley evolved as a businesswoman. Keeley hired Shandy to a role that she doesn’t have any experience doing. Shandy got there because she was Keeley’s friend, and Keeley brought her in because the former saw potential on the latter. While the potential was there, she was unable to manage it properly because of their personal relationship (a mistake that is not uncommon to anyone starting a business, or a newly-minted leader/manager).
    Finally, Jack’s existence in the story showed or proved Keeley’s need to be in a relationship as soon as her previous one ended. After breaking up with Jamie, she immediately dated Roy. While Roy was good to Keeley during their run, how Roy handled their breakup have obviously affected Keeley’s ability to make smart decisions. In fact, she explicitly said moments before she kisses Jack that is tired of feeling sad and lonely. After she broke it up with Jack, I personally think it made her realize that immediately jumping from one relationship do not define her, especially if it can take away her dreams from her. This is also I think why she did not take Roy immediately after he issued a heartfelt apology. While something physical happened between them immediately after that apology, it appears it is just a “bonus night” so she can move on from what appears as an abrupt end to her relationship with Roy. She did that to Jamie, and soon after it happened, she has moved on.

    I think Shandi and Zava served the story well. Keeley was having trouble acclimating to her business because she didn’t have the camaraderie that she did at Richmond. She brought Shandi in to have a friend and she learned that she needed to grow by herself. Zava is the opposite of the Richmond way. He is all for one and while it works, the team started falling apart. Once he left, the one for all with Jamie became apparent and the team was able to transcend their talent because they believed in each other.

    I disagree that Roy and Jamie's fight was out of character for them or didn't make sense. I think it can seem like that because we've seen so much Growth (TM) from them this season that we forget they are both still who they are, still imperfect, and for all that they can bring out the best in each other, they also have a long history of bringing out the worst in each other. They're also both very Competitive men who have been successful in their chosen profession because of that Competitiveness. And the next scene with the Diamond Dogs gets It this idea that just because you have a bad moment, just because you backside, doesn't mean that all your Growth didn't happen. Growth is not linear. It's often two steps forward and one step back, but you have to give yourself grace to mess up.
    Just the episode before this, we see Jamie learn to embrace being the "Prince Prick of all Pricks" and show that being Confident and Competitive and even a little (a lot) Cocky is part of who he is and that's OK.
    Roy has come a long way with his insecurities, but they still exist. He hasn't gotten over them, ESPECIALLY as they relate to Keely, and he's still Angry and often leans towards physical violence. (Remember his little speech about how to deal with bullies earlier this very season?)
    Roy tells Jamie to back off, and Jamie very predictably digs in and refuses to surrender- he's not going to the in to Roy Kent of all people. Roy tries to knock Jamie down and Jamie, just like on the pitch, goes for his opponent's weakness.
    It would have been far less realistic for Jamie and Roy to magically settle their differences in a mature manner. The fact that they only got into a brief fight before realizing how stupid they were being I think makes a lot more sense than them not fighting at all.

    • @pian816
      @pian816 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that it was in character for them to argue, but I'm a little disappointed that it's how they ended the Roy/Jamie/Keeley trio. For however wholesome the rest of their endings are, it felt a little incomplete for me. It feels like they played it a little bit too much for laughs/superficiality. I understand that growth is not linear, but I wasn't sold.

    if you haven't already been pointed toward it, take a look at the headlines for the magazines when Ted is leaving from the airport. There is a final beat for Zava and Shandy, as well as, a possible hint Ted might move back. The paper he buys has a Rebecca headline but it also has a piece on getting property in England. Perhaps Ted is looking into moving over more permenantly?
    Also, I saw another review about Keely not picking Roy or Jamie is actually her picking herself instead. Remember the line in episode 1x2 where Ted says a better headline would be something, something.. "whose relationship does not define her." Maybe Keely's growth was to become even more independent and self-sufficient?

    Excellent recap, as always! Two thoughts on my part:
    1. I also think the Dutchman ending for Rebecca was maybe a bit forced. BUT, it did provide closure to Rebecca's arc:
    Rebecca's first word in the series: Rupert. Her last word: Rebecca.
    2. Am I the only one that thinks that maybe Keeley's marketing plan for a women's team is foreshadowing to a new series?

    I have loved your analyses through this series, but I think you are wrong about Nate’s ending. I think Nate *wanted* to be junior kit man. It was his genius, and how success made him feel, and not just seeking approval, that led him to the dark side. When he worked at Taste of Athens, he told Jade he enjoyed working there. He figures out that he is happy being helpful, being useful, and not being in charge, or being adored. He figured out that "one is happy to be of service," to quote my favorite Robin Williams movie. I don’t think he is working his way back up, I think he is doing what he loves, with those he loves.
