It’s funny that you mention MAC fix+... when I worked there, it was drilled into our brains that we should never call it a setting spray, that it was a finishing spray and it didn’t have any claims of prolonging the makeup. Now, no ingredients have changed and all of the sudden it’s a setting spray. I even contacted MAC about it. Let’s just say, they beat around the bush and couldn’t give me an honest answer about it.

As a flight attendant who is in full makeup for 10 plus hours on overnight flights Urban Decay all-nighter is the best setting spray I have ever used. I would put my make-up on 8pm in California and by the time I made it to South Carolina, 9 am the next day, 2 flights later, my makeup would still look like I just applied it. I recently learned from another TH-cam makeup video, one hack with setting spray that has worked pretty well for me. After applying concealer to under eye, spay a tiny amount of setting spray on your hand. Take a finger, dip in spray and pat the under eye area until dry. They recommend a tiny amount of powder over the top to finish, but if I powder before putting on my base layer, I’ve found the extra powder is too much. Doing this hack has significantly decreased the amount of creasing I get in my laugh lines or under eye. It’s the only thing I use the setting spray for.... I LOVE Wayne’s recommendation for powdering after moisturizer. It’s a TOTAL GAME CHANGER!

My oily skin disappeared once I stopped washing my face with harsh soaps, and only wash my face once a day, and started moisturizing more. Especially when I started using almond oil to remove my makeup before I washed it off. It’s been a wonderful routine for the last few years. My makeup sets and holds better than it ever has. This won’t work for everyone, but it definitely helped me.

  • @Slivings911

I’m in my 60s with somewhat dry skin, and before I knew setting sprays even existed I used to finish my makeup with a spritz of rose water to take away the dry powdery look (I like powder as foundation. It’s just easier). But now, I use NYX Dewy Finish setting spray (drug store, under $10) and it works great for me. I actually receive the occasional compliment on my complexion even though I’m old. I think it’s that dewy finish setting spray, lol! It isn’t shiny on me either, just a little more dewy. I can see your point about setting sprays not working as well for oily skin, however. But as you age you might be glad to have oily skin. Mine used to be “normal” but it dries out as you age.
Off topic but yesterday, I tried one of Wayne’s tips from years ago: I used powder on moisturized skin first, and then a few drops of liquid foundation over it. Like, hardly any liquid foundation at all. You don’t need as much if you apply powder first. What a revelation! It blended so well and seamlessly. I can see that skin needs to be exfoliated beforehand. I will definitely use that tip for times I want to wear liquid foundation. I wear relatively very little makeup. I don’t have a clue about contouring and highlighting and eye makeup and false lashes (mine would end up on my eyebrows probably, lord help us). But a nice even complexion with a slightly dewy finish works well for me every day. And that tip is AMAZING.

For those of you with oily skin... i have had oily skin for years and makeup never lasted beyond 3 hours.. so what i do now when there is a big event coming up is 7 days before the event i start using clay based face washes every other morning and a clay mask at least twice during those 7 days (at night) then the night before the big event i use a moisturising sheet mask (my favohrite is the garnier moisture bomb) this ensures that my skin doesnt get too dry from the clay masks and wash to over produce oils and that my skin has a balanced level of moisture. I even tried this on my wedding day in Morocco during the summer along with urban decay all nighter and my makeup lasted throughout the wedding and all the way until i woke up on the afternoon of next day (i dont normally sleep in my makeup but moroccan weddings are literally 8 to 9 hours long and last until the dawn of the next day along with having to change into several outfits, which my makeup also survived, so i was dead tired at the end and just plopped my head into the pillow and slept) 🤣

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to a wedding in a hot destination, combine that with masks & i was truly panicking. I wear makeup to cover my vitiligo so it coming off has been a real concern. I know it won't entirely fix the mask part, but if i could cut back on my oily ass face just a little i feel like I'll have a chance ☺️

What struck me about what you said is how the setting sprays break down makeup and how so many influencers say it "melts my makeup together." They probably thought that was a good way of explaining that it blends it together seamlessly when it actually WAS melting their makeup together.

In the late 1970's my mother took me to a vintage drugstore, in a very small town, close to home. Inside, they had the original soda fountain. Hand crafted shakes, malts, sundaes. Soda Pop was created and served in beautiful glasses. Also inside, behind ornate glass displays, we're vintage powder compacts, cake mascaras and bullet lipsticks. Lol, I could not waite to be a young lady so I could have a beautiful compact and a red bullet lipstick. Now that I am 50, I still long to try all the red bullet lipsticks 💄. Of course, they should be applied with the aid of a fabulous, compact mirror.💜

On the days I apply my skincare, prime and set with the tiniest dusting of powder, and a few spritzes of Urban Decay All Nighter before foundation, my makeup has never felt so good nor lasted as long. It looks way to flat and cakes on my skin even when I apply with a damp beauty blender. I am still in search of a good foundation that doesn’t lay heavy on my skin. I want my skin to show through even with the age spots. They don’t bother me. I have carried a compact with sponge in my bag since I was a teenager. Everyone use to laugh because they would say gotta powder that nose and apply some lipstick. Yes! Those things have always been important to me. Enjoy all of your videos so much !

I told her I'll run by CVS and get hairspray. She said Nooooo. When I got there a few of our Drag Queen friends were there. I told them the situation. They said spray that on your face it's probably better than most setting spray.
I actually gave my face a blast to convince her. I don't know how she felt at the end of the night but I was impressed.

Idk as a oily skin person setting spray was a game changer. I still use them and only blot my face with tissue and never touch up bc I can NOT deal with another compact breaking in my makeup bag. Love ya Wayne no compact will ever enter my purse ever again.

Omg I’ve been using Herbal Essences “Set Me Up” Hairspray as makeup setting spray but been too embarrassed to tell anyone lol. I have oily skin and I find it works just as good as my urban decay all nighter 🤷🏼‍♀️ plus it smells delicious.

As an oily person, I appreciate the honesty! Rarely do products work for me, especially the products marked for oily skin. Makeup literally drips down or absorbs into my skin. I have no interest in spraying hairspray onto my face, and this confirms my stance.

I’ve had really good success just spraying it on a q-tip and applying it to areas where I seem to get smearing like around my eyes, lips.

I used a setting spray over my makeup once for an outdoor concert one summer. I was sweating and it actually downpoured the last 10 mins of the show. Very pleasantly surprised that my makeup didn't slide right off of my face! My skin is very dry, with oily tendencies as the hours tick on but not enough for me to carry powder. It's probably the only time I've ever truly been impressed with setting sprays though.

It all makes sense now! I have oily skin and no setting spray has EVER worked for me. Wayne I’d love an updated oily skin base video. Would rcma work? How would I set this for oily skin

Wayne, I absolutely adore you! You are my go to beauty guru. I bought my first ever setting spray by Skindinavia through your channel. I also bought their primer spray. I felt like I had upped my game and was so proud. I have nearly used all the product even though it did not work. Now you tell me? Now? I have oily skin and as you say now, that's why it won't work. I feel like a fool. But you did your job, got countless fans to buy Skindinavia and now you post this. "The big fat setting spray lie"... You made me feel swindled.

Omg finally an explanation! I had always wondered why my face always turned into a mess after a couple of hours of using setting sprays! I wasted so much money trying different ones and they all make me look like I rubbed straight chicken grease on my face. I'll try using it as primer then powder touch ups so maybe I can still get some use out of them. Thank you!!
