    Visited Quito for a month, wonderful place. I was fully replenished coming back and felt as though I could change my life a bit. Was very happy to learn some of the native language as well as more spanish too. Gotta say my friends and I got drunk the first day, oh what an experience! I miss it.
    As well, a note of advice. Don't drive with your windows down at night and keep your belongings in your line of sight.

    Great tips! I visited Ecuador in may of 2021 and I felt super safe! Contrary to you saying don’t walk up to Virgin Mary, I did but coming down some locals told me it could be unsafe! Best way to get to know the city is by walking, but being mindful of the sketchy places. Cheers!

      @@f.w.5928 Hi. What you mention just happened yesterday and last night in a very specific part of the city, called La Gasca. Due to heavy raining and poor infrastructure in that area, specially since it's located just down a cleft, an alluvium happened creating major damage to houses and streets because of the great deal of water, mud and debris. As of right now, deaths, injured and missing people have been reported, but authorities, police and firemen are dealing with the damage. Traditionally, La Gasca isn't a very touristy part of Quito, so I really don't think it will affect your trip very much. You'll probably see an increase in traffic, because that area may be shut down for a while, altering vehicles and public transportation's usual routes, but other than that I think you're good. Enjoy Quito! I'm a local and love when tourists love with my city as much as I do

    Haha... I live in Quito and everything you said is on point. I also wouldn't recommend eating any street food... You may get food poisoned and diarrhea. However, the EMMAPS ( water supply facility for the city of Quito) tested the waters several times (literally) and they came out with a report stating that IT IS drinkable. The problem may be the pipelines since most in the city center's are rusty the water may be contamined. Also, watch out for taxi drivers rounding the numbers on those fares. You pay for your ride and they would keep the change.

    DON'T swerve on Quito if visiting northern South America. Visited for Christmas in 2017 while living in Colombia. With a variety of day trips like Cotopaxi (Glacier at around 5000m pretty much on the Equator), an overnight to an ecolodge a couple hours out of town (our great airBNB was so inexpensive we double booked that night) .
    And if you like craft beer, DON'T miss Bandidos del Paramo. Great beer.
    Finally DON'T freak out if you get US coins (those Sacajewa dollar coins) as change ... in fact, leave space as you'll be carrying a lot of coin cash. Saw more of those my first couple hours in Quito than, well, decades of living in the US.

It is the spot of the Marian apparition, known as Our Lady of Good Success. That convent has an important role to play in the prophesied restoration of Christianity.

    Actually, tap water is super safe in Quito; we drink it on a daily basis because it's being controlled all the time. So, if something it's not right with water, the local government let us know immediately until they can fix it and do some tests to check everything is right again. That is very very weird, though; it almost never happens.

    Great video! I actually live near Quito so I know that most of the video is correct. I disagree that there is a problem with just jumping into taxis in Quito. As long as there is a "taximetro" (which starts at $0.50 and shows the total fare) you are fine. The official taxis are highly regulated in Quito. Also, there ARE lots of ATMs in Quito. You have to enter the bank to find a lot of them. Don't be afraid of the guard with the shotgun at the door.😉 There is a wide difference in fees for withdrawing money though. I would try and find a Banco Guayaquil (Magenta color) ATM since they have some of the lowest fees and there are lots of them.
    Oh, and there is one more don't. DON'T eat the salad, especially the lettuce, if the restaurant looks a little dodgy.

    • @patatamagicachan3366
      @patatamagicachan3366 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, nice, I can confirm this as I live in Quito.
      Also, the huecas (Called like that because they are mostly a bit under ground level) might not be the best place to eat for foreging people.
      There are also different types of taxi. The black ones, red ones and green ones (The color is in the hood), those usually charge a bit more and honestly my parents told me not to take thosem, so I just don't. The totally yellow taxis are mostly ok though (A taximetro is important as you said).
      Finally, the teleferico is great, but even to some of us locals the altitud it gets to gives us problems. Also is very, very cold in there.

    Additionally, many restaurants have the service included in the price of the meal, as well as the tax (IVA). Many tourist restaurants will press you for a tip, but you've already had it factored into your bill. If you do have $50 or $ 100 bill some Supermaxi Grocery stores may accept them, but with Hundies, you may have a government statement to fill out that you earned that money legally - it's not a big deal.

      It's recomendable to know spanish, but if you dont, well, that's for what the guides are for.
      Though you'll be fine with broken spanish. I think.

    Would you recommend visiting Colombia as a side trip while in Quito?

    • @jo.e.1037
      @jo.e.1037 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colombia is a different country, so it would be better if you just do tourism in Ecuador and then go to Colombia or vice-versa; otherwise, it'll take too much off of your time. Unless you're staying a really long time in Ecuador, I don't think it's worth it.

      @@TyranyFighterPatriot I don't know. Just LOTS of steps. Great workout! But if you're not active it will definitely be an issue. Also the dogs were a touch territorial, but the locals kept them behaved.

    The thing about the toilet paper into the bowl is an urban legend. I was born in Quito and I never heard that you shouldn't put toilet paper into the toilet bowl! I did it for the 20 years that I lived there. Also tap water was fine to drink, I don't know if that has changed.

    • @FalconLight
      @FalconLight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with the toilet paper is that in public places people can use too much paper and clog the toilet, the tap wather is fine if your are a local, but for turis usually the micro contaminations from the pipes can get them sick.

    Can someone please answer my question. How does anyone afford to travel around the world like this? Does he have a trust fund, inheritance, a really good job that pays well and can work remote? I want to know.

    • @WoltersWorldEats

      Mark is a professor by day. But we also prioritize travel in our budget. We have a video on how to afford travel. For instance we haven't had cable in more than a decade. A year of cable could buy a flight to somewhere really special.
