It might be dated but this is my favorite version of the Star Spangled Banner I've heard and the visual part is almost like a quick history lesson of America
Totally agree ....a 2 minute history lesson if I ever saw one, I love this the BEST. This was the sign-off years ago and I would actually wait to watch it before I shut the TV off. Our Channel 29 out of Philadelphia 👍❤️
*Sighs* really miss the old days alot, it will make me even more sad as the decade goes by. Let these old classic versions remain in our hearts for all eternity ♥
This was definitely one of the best TV sign offs ever. Who ever found all those historical photos and graphics of the way the American flag evolved from 1776 until Alaska and Hawaii joined the US in 1959 did a lot of research to put this together. Could it have been assembled by a history professor? It's a great way albeit short of teaching our nation's history. I feel you can learn a lot about history from a nation's flag. An outstanding sign off.
This was made in 1971, and it capitalizes America's brightest moments from the Revolution until that year. So it makes sense that the last clip is the Man on the Moon, which had been only two years prior and still ongoing at the time (Apollo 14)
The night I came back from three months in Israel in 1975, I stayed up until WAVE (Louisville) went off the air, just so I could hear this as my own "welcome home." It has brought tears to my eyes ever since.
I'll be honest here. I am a Canadian. This is the best version of the SSB EVER to date. The ending makes this big dude wanna cry as well so I don't blame you folks for being emotional at all.
+MrTantraMan As an American (of partial Canadian descent), I reciprocate that feeling toward "O Canada." That is one of my favorite national anthems other than our own.
@@SenorAspie This rendition is beautiful, But, Sandi Patty legit made MILLIONS get goosebumps!!! The recording used on this film was by Bob Sharples & His Military Band, from the London Phase 4 album "America On The March" (SP-44033, 1964). Many who owned copies spoke of having worn out the grooves on this track by repeated plays. A shame there has never been a restoration job on this film, with the original stereo track used and sync'd to the picture.
+wmbrown6 I remember when I was in elementary school, everyone had to take music classes, and we had a CD or cassette with a rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." It was similar to this one in that it did a single verse before repeating the part from "And the rocket's red glare" onward. However, it had the lyrics performed by a chorus and didn't feature a military-style band, instead going with more of a piano-based sound.
Oh my! Thank you for sharing this information sir! This is my favorite rendition by far! I wish they would restore this and play it again in the middle of the night and the middle of the day! Just because 👍🙏
WHNT TV 19 still does the national anthem during a break in the CBS Overnight News, around 3:55 am Huntsville, Alabama, time. They use a lot of different recordings made in a studio in Nashville of singers singing the anthem. It may not be as grand as the old films but I AM proud that a station here in Alabama still stands for our flag.
"The Star Spangled Banner", arranged by Bob Sharples conducting the London Festival Orchestra of DECCA Records. It appears as track number ten on the album "America On the March" first released in 1963 and available these days in brilliant stereo on CD.
say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? WRAL in Raleigh, NC played this for their sign off/on when I was a little fellow. I'm 54 now and still am deeply stirred when I hear it. The trumpet part at the end, I'm sure, is what made me want to be a trumpet player. What a soaring aria. I have looked for this for 20 years and Mr. John Harris, at WRAL helped me find it. Thank you, John! God Bless America.
I'm 55 , I don't remember what station used this for there sign off but when I was young I used to stay up until this came on sometimes it wouldn't come on until 3 or 4am
I also watched this on WAVE-TV, Louisville, KY, and it always gave me goosebumps, too! There has never been a better rendition of the American National Anthem, and the only thing it suffered from was the lack of fidelity that televisions had when this was the sign-off. It is significant even today. It is such a pity our history still has not taken us beyond the moon, yet. What more inspiration do you need to reach for the stars?
Best version ever of the star spangled banner - I never knew where it came from till recently. Unforgettable station signoff, would stay up often to hear it. Bob Sharples' musical genius truly captured the majesty of this anthem, as he did with many other compositions. This amazing rendition of SSB will hopefully be recognized more widely in the future. I wish our military bands would play this arrangement. Thank you for posting!
Gotta love the 20th Century, so much invention and change, happened during the greatest century of mankind. Love seeing the cars incorporated into the video. Like a history lesson in one.

We sign-off fans call this particular film "Flag Evolution". The reasons you see in the film. WITI's fellow Fox stations WNYW in NYC and WTAF/WTXF Philly also used this film.
I never thought I'd see this again! Thanks for sharing! I remember seeing this during the signoffs at the Miami station WTVJ (I think that's the call letters). Great work, wish it could be updated with today's events.
Wow does this bring back memories! I remember watching this in the early to mid 80's when I was in my early teens. It would come on WPIX in New York. Before we had a VCR for me to record it, I would set my alarm clock to wake me up early in the morning, just so I could watch it, then I'd go back to sleep. I have been looking for this for years on youtube. I never knew it was called Flag Evolution.
I miss TV sign-offs, too. When I was a teenager in the 70's and couldn't sleep at night, I would watch them (and if I got up early in the morning, I would watch sign-ons, too). However, I respectfully disagree - I found this version *too* emotional (and somewhat melancholy) as it made me long for my younger days; I remember WOOD-TV, Channel 8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan used this 1971 SSB film for their sign-offs and sign-ons, as well as WNYW (and WNEW before that), Channel 5 in NYC. The one SSB film I *really* liked, however, was the "moog" version from 1975, which began with a panning shot of Mt. Rushmore over a tympani drumroll and ended with a zooming in on the flag, ending up in the blue field of stars with a "whooshing" sound effect. That one was more compact and *upbeat,* and reminds me of happier times during my "wonder years."
I use to stay up late just to watch this when I was 10 or 11 I always liked this version and I played trumpet in my school band and we had to play this but it didn't sound anything like this
There's never been a version like it before and none like it since. Of course, I have a soft spot for Sandy Patti's 1986 version that ended ABC's coverage of "Liberty Weekend." But this is the tops!
It was the mid 70s and either ch 11 or ch 5 in NYC that closed their broadcast day and opened the broadcast day with this exact rendition of the Star Spangled Banner ,,,,,, best of all time for me , thanks so very much for sharing this with us all , God Bless America .
WAVE TV in Louisville Ky. used to use this as well. I haven't heard this in ages. BTW, this is my all time favorite rendition. Majestic, powerful & moving. No other version I've ever heard comes close. Even as a kid I was deeply moved hearing & watching this.
I remember when WBZ-TV in Boston ended their broadcast day with this version of the national anthem. And before that, they would have an Evening Prayer, which would either be a bible reading or some hearing-impaired kids at Crotched Mountain give the Lord's Prayer in ASL.
Great version, this was also used by an old TV station in Fawn Circle, Minnesota called K83FC. It went under in 1983 after a terrible blizzard and several broadcast hijackings
I remember watching this in the 70s on ch 11 in NYC as its closing the broadcast day and starting the broadcast day,,,,,,,,, I would stay up just to watch this,,,, so beautiful.
WITI and WNEW-TV (pre-1978, and definitely pre-Fox WNYW) were the only stations I know of to show the ending copyright notice crediting the production company (Saxton Graphic Associates, Ltd.) and the year it was produced (1971). (In the immediate period after WNEW became WNYW, they resumed using the original Flag Evolution "SSB," but I can't tell if they retained that copyright notice at the end.)
National Screen Service also distributed this to drive-in theaters during the 1970's. Their name was included in a slightly different copyright notice at the end.
I too would stay up a few minutes longer way back when, just to listen to this version during my local station's sign-off. The part that always gets me is that little pause around 1:50 followed by the powerful return for the "gave proof through the night" line of the song. An excellent quality version of this recording can be heard here: th-cam.com/video/ybi7bGv0YZw/w-d-xo.html
If you know the lyrics, the lines "Conquer if we must, for our cause it is just" occur just after the Flag of Rebellion comes on screen. Coincidence, or pointed political commentary by the original video editors? Oh yeah, that's at 1:00 on this video.
Interesting... some of the techniques that Ken Burns uses to showcase still photographs in his documentaries were anticipated in this clip-- years before Burns got to them.
this should be extended and include recent events. i wouldn't use the actual star-spangled banner until the depression era (after all, it didn't become the anthem until 1931). key events (for me) include: the rise of 24-hour television, the end of the cold war, windows 95, "i did not have sex with that woman", the dot-com bubble, y2k, 9/11, the ensuing war on terror, the advent of social media, obama's victory, and trump's conquest.
Does anyone know the original recording or performance used in this video? I'm looking for it on CD. (And I hope whoever owns this video or the copyright now will remaster it and save it before it gets lost in the dustbin of history.)
Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? It’s too bad that the timeline at the end jumps from 1945 to 1969. I would’ve liked to have seen Ike, JFK, early TV, the Beatles, and the Civil Rights Movement among the moon landing and other moments.
I like witney Houston's version as well as this one only the 48 star segment left out the events and pics of the late 40s and 50s leading up to Alaska and Hawaii becoming states.
