    What a fantastic album! One of my faves! 10/8 time signature epic!

    If they'd brought this back for the 1980 tour, with Phil's voice being that much grittier, it would've killed everyone in the venue.

    Imagine having to keep a 10/8 rhythm with incredibly difficult fills in between and having to add hi-hat and tom accents. That must’ve been a nightmare for Chester and the band to play live. Definitely one of the most complicated songs in Genesis catalogue.

      He played with weather report and Zappa, I am sure he really had no problem with this song

      @@jamesdunn5495 Actually, he did have problems. And he was the world's greatest drummer in my book.
      Sure, he kept the rhythm (of course he did!), but some of the impossible fills (should that be "phills"? 😅) are missing.

    Probably the most challenging thing Chester played on the drums with Genesis.

      @@brianadams5088 Perfectly normal. The same, for example, with lead Bb trumpet. You can write very high stuff for studio recordings, but you shouldn't wear out a performer live, inviting desaster. It took a lot of courage for Phil to have a shot at songs such as Down And Out or Back In NYC. These simply have a lot of voice shredding high notes, such as the Bb 4 here.

    During a 2020 interview on UK radio before The Last Domino? Tour the interviewer was praising Phil's drumming on Down And Out and Phil said he "didn't remember the song." It really made me sad to hear him say that.

    I was under the impression the song was never actually played live? Ditched during rehearsals? Probably one of my favourites.

      It was played live a few times during the 1978 Tour. Probably dropped from the setlist as it was quite difficult for Phil to sing in a whole set. Some says that also Chester might have been happy as they omitted it from the setlist. 🎶🙂 Here you can hear one of the live performances: th-cam.com/video/0mYIRpBnCN8/w-d-xo.html 😉

      I saw them at The Spectrum in Philadelphia on March 31 on this tour. From 15 rows out! This was in the set, the sound was extraordinary!! The keyboards in particular stood out!! I also saw them at Madison Square Garden in July of 78, they had substituted "Ballad Of Big" for "Down and Out" at this show. This is my favorite track from ATTWT hands down!!!

    Chester could definitely kerp the 10/8 Rythym , but was missing some of the fills, probably, concernrd about getting lost

    • @Fabiopalmieri67
      @Fabiopalmieri67 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the time (1976-1980), Phil used to overdub most tom-tom fills anyway. This is apparent in some isolated tracks from Wind & Wuthering that can be heard here on TH-cam. So no wonder Chester "stripped down" (so to speak) some of the parts he had to play on his own.

    • @truefilm6991
      @truefilm6991 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Fabiopalmieri67 Yes Phil did some overdubs, but only because he could in a studio recording. Listen to his drumming on The Lamb - any live version. He kills it each time with insane grooves, accents, kicks, fills, embellishments, rhythmic displacement, you name it. I know ....And Then There Were Three inside and out. To my old ears it sounds like Phil played Down And Out in one take and only added some percussion tracks to spice it up.

    • @DML1978
      @DML1978  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think that he missed the high notes at every concert during that track. It's often due to the shape of his voice on the actual day. Sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it doesn't. 😉
