Filipino Spaghetti: A Unique Cultural Adaptation If someone, especially an Italian, is confused or even feels strongly about why Filipino spaghetti is different, here’s a detailed explanation that clears everything up: 1. Filipino Spaghetti is Not a Copy-It’s a Unique Creation Filipino spaghetti is not meant to be a direct version of Italian pasta. It has evolved into its own distinct dish, shaped by Filipino culture, taste preferences, and available ingredients. Food naturally changes when it travels to different countries-just as pizza, ramen, and curry have all been adapted in various ways worldwide. 2. A Dish Designed for Children and Families One of the main reasons Filipino spaghetti has a sweeter sauce is that it was made to appeal to children. In the Philippines, it is a favorite at birthday parties and family gatherings. The slight sweetness makes it more enjoyable for kids, and over time, it became a nostalgic comfort food even for adults. 3. A Historical Adaptation Due to Available Ingredients Spaghetti was introduced to the Philippines through Western influences, but after World War II, tomato-based products were expensive and hard to find. As a solution, Filipinos used banana ketchup, which added sweetness and gave the dish its unique flavor. This wasn’t done to "change" spaghetti deliberately but rather as a practical adjustment based on what was available. 4. What is Banana Ketchup? Banana ketchup is a Filipino invention made from mashed bananas, vinegar, sugar, and spices. It was created as a substitute for tomato ketchup when tomatoes were scarce during the war. Despite its name, it doesn’t taste like bananas-it has a slightly sweet and tangy flavor that blends well with Filipino-style spaghetti sauce. 5. Every Culture Has Its Own Take on Food Even in Italy, pasta dishes vary by region. Some use seafood, while others use creamy sauces or simple olive oil-based recipes. In the same way, other countries have developed their own versions of dishes: Japan has ramen, which originally came from Chinese noodle soups but evolved into something uniquely Japanese. The U.S. has deep-dish pizza, which is very different from Neapolitan pizza. Tex-Mex cuisine, like nachos and burritos, is distinct from traditional Mexican food. These adaptations don’t replace the original versions-they simply exist alongside them as different ways to enjoy food. 6. Filipino Spaghetti is Not Wrong-It’s Just Different Filipino-style spaghetti is deeply embedded in our culture, bringing families together at celebrations and gatherings. Its uniqueness doesn’t mean it is better or worse than any other type of spaghetti-it simply reflects Filipino tastes and traditions. 7. Food is About Enjoyment, Not Debate Food constantly evolves based on history, culture, and local ingredients. Instead of seeing Filipino spaghetti as an "offense" to traditional recipes, it should be appreciated as an example of how food adapts across different cultures. If sushi can have mayonnaise and burgers can have pineapple, then there’s no reason to criticize Filipino spaghetti for being its own thing. At the end of the day, food is meant to bring joy, and Filipino spaghetti continues to do just that-especially for families and children. That’s what truly matters! anyway, I love pasta .. but Philippines spaghetti is my favorite.
Does anybody else want Josh and Ollie to take their headmaster with them on their next trip to the States? He's such a funny, lovable guy. EDIT: WOW! I have never gotten a comment with so many likes or replies! Thank you, everyone!

Philippines is the only country in the world where McD is not #1 in market share. When Jollibee first opened in London, me and my friends queued up for 5-6 hours. Some for even much longer. It’s a beloved brand.
This day has finally come! As a Filipino immigrant in the UK it`s always fun to see Brits react to Filipino spaghetti for the first time. Either you like it or hate it. It's divisive! 😂😂😂
The Banana Ketchup is actually Banana since tomatoes were scarce during the 2nd World War at one point so they found other means to make Ketchup and one of which is Banana and they use something else to make it red. The Banana adds bit of sweetness to the sauce also Bananas are in an abundance in the Philippines
@sibayiajaib3954 as much as it sounds like a war crime, it's what humans do to provide for something when there is a scarcity. SPAM is an example where meat supplies were low and people had to find a way to preserve what they have in hand. and banana ketchup here in our country is actually quite cheaper than tomato based ones so it is an alternative
@@sibayiajaib3954 War crime, huh? It was invented by a food chemist-turned guerilla fighter who helped save hundreds of American and British POWs in Japanese internment camps with her other recipes and you call banana ketchup a war crime? Shame on you!!!

I’m a Filipino-American. I love that this episode finally came to existence. Jollibee in the Philippines hits different. I just had Jollibee last week for the New Year’s Day celebration. I love the reactions and thoughts of this British High School student
I had Jollibee for lunch before xmas and new year's eve! Idk why but every Jollibees is just a happy, magical place. 🥹 just had to deal with the noise, tho. 😅
My favorite combo: take the piece of the fried skin, put a spoon of spaghetti on it, plus a bit of shredded chicken, pour the gravy, and bam! One mouthful of yummy goodness 😆
As a food history nerd I laughed really hard when that kid said he wasn’t a fan of the banana ketchup because he’s Italian. 😂 Tomatoes are indigenous to the American colonies and have only been in Europe since colonialism. Ketchup actually originally came from China. And banana ketchup came about because of a shortage of tomatoes in the Philippines and is now a staple condiment in their cuisine. Food history is my favorite because I love seeing how simple things have evolved in various cultures and the influence those evolutions have had on the culture. If you’re still reading this…. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
Love this! Absolute culture shock.😂 The poor italian student subjected to trauma of jollibee spaghetti 😂 Airport chicken burger! Im crying. The crunch of that peach mango pie. Whew! That was a good laugh! 😂 Filipino living in London.
Jollibee is actually for Kids Taste, thats why its all sweet and not so much complicated taste but growing up eating this makes people loves it even as grown people here in the Philippines it became part of the culture.. just recently they add spicy.chicken because its now not for kids anymore unlike way back before in the 80s
So funny story. The first time I heard about this restaurant was when someone stole my credit card and tried to place an order for it in the Philippines. Had to call Navy Federal and clarify i didn't make the purchase because apparently, it's a popular spot for some sailors to oder food.
It's so funny with each episode they film of these students we get to see them grow up. The deeper voices, the height differences, and the more grown-up mannerisms. Some of these boys have grown at least six inches since the video with them trying biscuits and gravy. Theo's voice seems to have dropped at least three octives!
I 100% agree. I think this is the 3rd lot of students that they have had on their show? I do miss the other students who I think are a year older than these ones, I think this lot did the Squid Games but some of them are missing from this line up.

The kiddo who hated the Peach Mango pie and spit it on the bag is just so cute I can't even hate him for not liking the Peach Mango Pie which is an absolute fave for most people who is trying Jollibee for the first time.
Agree. You can't hate him for not liking it. He did say from the start that he doesn't like peach or mango. So his reaction was already kind of expected. At least he tried. Hahahaha.
Had Jollibee from Edinburgh for the first time in 2022. Never gone back to KFC since. Been to the Liverpool branch quite often now. Just something about their spicy chickenburger that just all the right things.
I just LOVE these kids...They are hands down honest not pretending, not even just to be polite and I find that really refreshing. I keep wondering what picky eaters would love to try next...Please keep them in.
11:19 - Poor kid just suffered the worst fate if you're the type of person who hates certain 'consistencies' to foods. Got a friend like that, I don't blame him for his reaction at all lol
I'm the same way with some foods. Sometimes the texture can just really mess with me. Yogurt custard stuff like that is one of the ones that I can handle up to a certain point and then the tiniest amount further. It suddenly becomes the most disgusting thing humanly possible
It's very common in neurodivergent people (ADHD/autism in particular). To be honest, he seems left-handed and his comparisons make a lot of sense to me which typically happens when the person is neurodivergent
@@Drcats69 I feel you. That’s me with pure oatmeal and cream of wheat. 3 bites in and my gag reflex is badly triggered. I can only eat a small amount with added fruits and granola to balance out the texture. Even that was a bit of a battle lol What sucks is when you’ve got ppl insisting you try it again, when you already know it won’t work out. And now you’ve got a wasted meal.
I’ve lived in the states for 27 years and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of Jollibee. I’ve just looked it up and the closest one to me is more than ten miles away and there’s one that hasn’t opened yet which leads me to believe that they’re new in the state where I live. I may take a drive out to one as the boys seem to really like the chicken and they do a large gravy and I love dipping fried chicken in gravy. My favourite thing to dip fried chicken in is mash spuds and gravy, yummy!!!
Here’s a Jolibee hack for you to try. Use the skin from the thigh as a wrap and fill it with pieces of chicken and mash potato’s. Then dip into the gravy.
“Something you would have as an 8 yr old for lunch” is very accurate 😂😂 its typically served in kids parties but as we filipinos grew older that sweet taste never left our pallets.
Fun fact: actually, the more savory variant, Tuna Pie was more popular than peach mango pie in the Philippines. So popular infact that, Jollibee was practically forced to turn it into a regular part of their menu despite supposedly only being a Lenten exclusive menu option.
LUCKY blokes, there are plenty of Americans who have never even had Jollibee's yet, the only reason I'm familiar with them is because I lived in Cali before, so the Filipinos over there have ran Jollibee's first for decades in that part of the country!
Same! I've lived in 4 of the US states (ND, MN, CO, and HI), and have never heard of Jollibee's, either! I see that the closest Jollibee's location to me is..... 210 miles north in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Banana ketchup is a very Filipino thing. There is no tomato, but it’s often (but not always) dyed red. Supposedly developed around WWII when there was a tomato shortage in the Philippines.
I love the different reactions and taste preferences of these kids and their teacher I'm assuming. They're all so polite and respectful and tried everything even the crazy combo for them. Great job kids!
Filipino here, the spaghetti isnt what you'd call "authentic pasta" at all. It's basically a sweet pasta made for kids, but as an adult I still like it because the sweetness goes well with a burger and fries (chips for you brits out there). McDonalds also has their own spaghetti in their menu here. Fun fact: Banana ketchup is really made from bananas. Vinegar is added to get the acidity. Food coloring is used to get the red color.
Vinegar is added cause it's a ketchup. Contrary to popular belief ketchup isn't just tomato ketchup hell the 1st ketchup wasn't using tomato, but mushrooms. It's basically a condiment with sugar, vinegar and a base then seasoning and spices. Banana ketchup also contains garlic, onions and to some kitchens soy sauce.
I live in Phoenix Arizona and I've never heard of this chicken place before. I found out we have one in Arizona but it's in Chandler and that's not close to me. Anyway I always enjoy these videos of the kids. My two favorite people on here has always been Theo and Lorenzo. Looking forward to the next one.
Seb, Frankie, Theo, and Lorenzo! I love seeing the OGs. Would love to see Max and Tyler again - they're hilarious! I approve of Freddie being added to the mix. He's great!
Splendid trying the Jollibee fastfood treats makes me jolly to think the lads from England have tasted the palettes of the Filipinos and liked them. Great to see Mr. Smith again ! Cheers
Last year while I was helping my friend/neighbor and her husband clean our her mother's house for renovation, I had them stop by Jollibees( we have 4 on the island of Oahu) after dropping off stuff at Goodwill. We ordered takeout to take home to her husband and sister; only I had ever eaten Jollibee. When they all tried it, everyone said it was better than KFC or Popeyes. Her husband fell in love with the spaghetti and peach/mango pie.
Makes sense with a substantial ethnic Filipino community. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, they’re located in places with a good deal of Filipinos, like Daly City, Vallejo, Concord, Union City, and Silicon Valley (Milpitas and San Jose).
Sucker of the: 1. Cheese burger (everyone was impressed). 2. Fried Chicken (everyone loved it but not as much as their reactions to cheeseburger). 3. Chicken burger (one didn't liked it) 4. peach apple pie (One despised it lol). Least favorite: 1. Spaghetti (most of the west hate sweet spaghetti).
Ollie went back to Britain as a trucker from Texas with the Buc-ee's hat and T-shirt. I wonder if he's wearing a big silver belt buckle? Yeee-haw! 🤠😂 High praise from Lorenzo? M'kay, it's not actually disgusting. 🤣
I'm Filipino, and for reasons even I don't know (or more like don't remember) I disliked Jollibee for most of my childhood. I revisited it when I was around 17 or 18, ate Chickenjoy, and had my mind blown by what I had been missing for years.
Maybe the way it was cook was off. Once, I was served raw Chickenjoy and they gave me 1 free and my money back... too bad I can't eat since I was rush to the hospital. Other than that I love Jollibee.
Same! I never really liked Jollibee growing up, mainly because my parents preferred McDonalds so we'd go there instead. Now that I'm older, honestly there are just some days wherein you crave Chickenjoy and spaghetti and that brings absolute joy.
Similar thing happened to someone I know, except he was sick when he first tried it as a child so he thought ChickenJoy was tasteless. He tried it again in his late teens and was surprised how good it was.
i too, wouldn't mind seeing this. though i'm an american who had a ranchless childhood lmao i do now eat ranch, but ONLY if it's the one from wingstop. that one i could probably just drink alone
@valarya places in uk will often give garlic dip with pizza, dominos, papa johns etc. Im guessing ranch is similar to garlic dip but idk im not american
Yeyyy! long time Filipino audience here! hahaha i was shocked when i saw this episode 😂 I loved that they liked the food and was honest. I expected the reaction of the spaghetti already hahahah. i think Filipino spaghetti is an acquired taste. It’s mostly due to nostalgic feeling of childhood hahahah since i believe that the spaghetti was originally targeted for kids hence why it’s sweet, and the banana ketchup is related to our history during the colonization of americans here where the philippines don’t have tomatoes available here, which is why Maria Orosa invented the banana ketchup because she wanted to decrease Philippines’ reliance on imported food. I loved the kids enthusiasm and being open minded in tasting Jollibee.
That poor kid at the end still trying the pie even though he knew he was going to hate it only to have a whole extra insult to injury with the custard 😢 dude I feel for you! I have tried many things and have also had that immediate, THIS NEEDS TO BE OUT OF MY MOUTH RIGHT NOW! reaction. Props to you for trying it anyway! Good man!
This is the most educational comment section ever… instead of war mode, Filipinos are sharing history, culture and appreciation on the review whether it is good or bad review. I need me some Jollibee now.
Banana ketchup.... it may be controversial but its a testament of filipino ingenuity in times of crisis and lack or resources. It was invented during the time when tomatoes were expensive in the country and our most abundant resource was bananas.
a ketchup is just a name for a certain style of condiments. it doesnt have to be tomato and never did lol. mushroom ketchup predates tomato ketchup. there are others even older. "although early recipes for various different varieties of ketchup contained mushrooms, oysters, mussels, egg whites, grapes, or walnuts"
I have two acquaintances, a Filipino (M) and Italian (F) married couple. Their kids, who are now grown up, still prefer Filipino spaghetti and carbonara over Italian pasta dishes.

It's so wild how fast kids change at this age. I recognize some of these kids from older videos and went damn i didn't remember their voice being so deep or them being so tall haha
I have a nephew almost their age. Each time that I see him, he's 3 inches taller than the last time. Once his voice finally changes, I'm gonna be like "I don't know who you are anymore!"
Jollibee is the best! I had it in the Philippines but when we went to LasVegas, I had my boyfriend taste it and he enjoyed everything we ordered from there. Then next door was Chow King 👑, another delicious fast food place.
The spaghetti on its own is an acquired taste and might not be for everyone, but it pairs VERY nicely with the salty chicken, which is how it's often eaten. Mix the sweet spaghetti with the salty chicken and you have a great combination. I don't always love the spaghetti because it's definitely strange, but sometimes you do crave it.
Dave is a legend 😂 Those boys are so lucky having him as headmaster. ❤ My daughter went to Spain for her holiday last year and they had gluten free macdonalds burgers! She was so excited. Shame they don’t do them here. 🇬🇧
I lived in London and works in central London so Jollibee is just in the corner and that’s something special. I introduced it to all of my office mates and they love it, chicken is the best but spaghetti is ok for other others but not for all.
That to me is like the Jolly team conducting a recruitment drive for future shows. Any unadventurous kid with a narrow palate ain't getting invited back in :) Principal Dave's always the measuring stick because you take him anywhere and get him to eat anything and he'll love it! Filipino Spaghetti: A Unique Cultural Adaptation
If someone, especially an Italian, is confused or even feels strongly about why Filipino spaghetti is different, here’s a detailed explanation that clears everything up:
1. Filipino Spaghetti is Not a Copy-It’s a Unique Creation
Filipino spaghetti is not meant to be a direct version of Italian pasta. It has evolved into its own distinct dish, shaped by Filipino culture, taste preferences, and available ingredients. Food naturally changes when it travels to different countries-just as pizza, ramen, and curry have all been adapted in various ways worldwide.
2. A Dish Designed for Children and Families
One of the main reasons Filipino spaghetti has a sweeter sauce is that it was made to appeal to children. In the Philippines, it is a favorite at birthday parties and family gatherings. The slight sweetness makes it more enjoyable for kids, and over time, it became a nostalgic comfort food even for adults.
3. A Historical Adaptation Due to Available Ingredients
Spaghetti was introduced to the Philippines through Western influences, but after World War II, tomato-based products were expensive and hard to find.
5. Every Culture Has Its Own Take on Food
Even in Italy, pasta dishes vary by region. Some use seafood, while others use creamy sauces or simple olive oil-based recipes. In the same way, other countries have developed their own versions of dishes:
Japan has ramen, which originally came from Chinese noodle soups but evolved into something uniquely Japanese.
The U.S. has deep-dish pizza, which is very different from Neapolitan pizza.
Tex-Mex cuisine, like nachos and burritos, is distinct from traditional Mexican food.
These adaptations don’t replace the original versions-they simply exist alongside them as different ways to enjoy food.
6. Filipino Spaghetti is Not Wrong-It’s Just Different
Filipino-style spaghetti is deeply embedded in our culture, bringing families together at celebrations and gatherings. Its uniqueness doesn’t mean it is better or worse than any other type of spaghetti-it simply reflects Filipino tastes and traditions.
7. Food is About Enjoyment, Not Debate
Food constantly evolves based on history, culture, and local ingredients.

Yes 🙌🏼 The headmaster and these students!
tbh I want to see them do the atlantic tour of Canada ... and learn how to truly eat lobster ... I am sure a Miq Maq friend of mine can get them hooked up with the whole bit from sea to stomach ...

The Banana Ketchup is actually Banana since tomatoes were scarce during the 2nd World War at one point so they found other means to make Ketchup and one of which is Banana and they use something else to make it red. The Banana adds bit of sweetness to the sauce also Bananas are in an abundance in the Philippines
its for real? its serious war crime absolutely

Fellow Filipino American!🎉
I thought of the same thing when they did their Jollibee video back then. Finally came true.
I had Jollibee for lunch before xmas and new year's eve! Idk why but every Jollibees is just a happy, magical place. 🥹 just had to deal with the noise, tho. 😅

As an American ,I will say Jollibee spicy chicken is THE BEST!
@SnipersLaww hopefully you get to try it. If possible, eating the Jollibee Chicken with rice and gravy is banging nice.

That Headmaster deserves his official American badge drinking that gravy unsolicited. He deserves his own show.
I second this ☝🏻 he REALLY needs a series of his own whether here on KE or Jolly.

nah he got that Filipino seal of approval (Filipinos also do this)
He deserves his own show for drinking gravy? either this is sarcasm or it's an indictment against our current standards of entertainment.
The headmaster must be married to a Filipina :)
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
the world changed so much the past few centuries :)
Yeah, he was joking, but I think he was on about the dish and not the origins of the tomato and European colonialism
Interesting history. Thank you. I knew a little of it. I new tomatoes were from the Americas. Had not heard of the banana substitute for tomatoes.
Fascinating!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing

I prefer to go directly to jollibee peach mango sundae which is a occasional item in the Philippines

I do. Wasteful child. Would not survive poverty.
It's very common in neurodivergent people (ADHD/autism in particular). To be honest, he seems left-handed and his comparisons make a lot of sense to me which typically happens when the person is neurodivergent

That would be a fun road trip. You should deff go. Hope the food is just as good as it seems :)

Here’s a Jolibee hack for you to try. Use the skin from the thigh as a wrap and fill it with pieces of chicken and mash potato’s. Then dip into the gravy.
Jollibee is 100% worth it.
take the chicken skin, get some of their rice on the skin, wrap it all up, dip in the gravy, busssssssss
My fave was the choco mallow pie. Shame they got rid of it in the menu
They started crimping on ingredients and size though. I want the regular (not the tiny) spicy tuna pie back bro.
Spicy tuna pie supremacy
I'd go for peach mango pie over tuna pie any day. It's just that tuna pie's a lot healthier when I need to pick one.

LUCKY blokes, there are plenty of Americans who have never even had Jollibee's yet, the only reason I'm familiar with them is because I lived in Cali before, so the Filipinos over there have ran Jollibee's first for decades in that part of the country!

I was so entertained by their reactions. I love it that these kids are just frank and honest whether they love the food or not. 👌🏼 for this.
I haven't had it, but from descriptions and videos it seems like Chef Boyardee or hot dogs and spaghetti that Americans would feed their kids.
@@Valorhammer In the Victorian era, there were dozens of 'ketchups'. Mushroom and tomato are the two that survived.

Depends on the branch cook 😅

Yeyyy! long time Filipino audience here! hahaha i was shocked when i saw this episode 😂 I loved that they liked the food and was honest.
