I've been a young bass player for three months when i bought this album by accident. No one had ever told me about Jaco. I just felt the CD cover was cool with a bass player on it. When i heard the first notes, I knew instantly it was something precious
Bireli is 18 years old at this time, ^^ damn i've looking in vain for a video of that concert for 10 years even more..... The best of Jaco is here (for me) the groove and improvisation is just sick ^^
This is great stuff. This is why TH-cam is so cool there is so much stuff I haven't heard. I saw Jaco with Weather Report they opened for Miles Davis about '76 I remember right.
Jaco always loved R&B funk ..... He does a little play on notes @ 4:13 ...... with "Boogies Nights" from Heatwave... before tearing it up and going deep.....
How can people say that his abilities as a musician faded toward his later years??? Jaco only got better and better. Thing is, his illness got worse. However, it's things like this that make me think those two factors worked oppositely. RIP Jaco
I would say his technical abilities was, surprisingly not, fading that much. Surprising considering his recurring mental breakdowns during the 80s. Maybe though his ability to come up with new interesting ideas and techniques faded a bit. It was much repricing old standard tunes and licks by then, at least in live conserts. On his last curtain call however, the instructional video, he is sharp, alert, playing great and coming up with some fresh stuff i think which is amazing considering his life situation at that time.
Type in this in your youtube search-box: Jaco Pastorius - Improvisation No. 1, Teen Town Live in Italy (last 10 mins) It contains Jaco's groovy solo because the poster has skipped Bireli Lagrene's opening solo.
THAT intro...was pure classical?, and then effortlessly shifted into something else, and then finally into Jaco....and that solo.... I suspect Bireli is not human... he's from some other planet
Even though he was sick at this period. He was still Jaco and had periods of sheer brilliance. At this time the associates in his musical world couldn't handle his unpredictabile/unreliable personality off the band stand.. Read Joni Mitchell's log about him several years prior (when substance abuse started). Missing important recording sessions with her (they were tight intimate friends) because he was loaded and playing frisbee with Joe Zawinal was his preference. His passing was horrific for those who love the man. His family avid, fans and those who who later idolize him as one of the most influential fathers of modern bass playing.
mierdaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAA!!!! POR ESTA GRABACIÓN CONOCI A JACO PASTORIUS!!! LA TENIA EN MINIDISC Y SE ME HABIA PERDIDO, LA HE BUSCADO POR CIELO MAR Y TIERRA Y AL FIN LA ENCONTRÉ!!!!! LEJOS LO MAS HERMOZO QUE HE ESCUCHADO EN MI VIDA!!!!!!!! POR ESTO ME HICE BAJISTA POR LA CHUCHA!! THANX MEEEEN!!!! THANKS FOR THIS RECORD!! Was the first recordings I heard of Jaco and thought he would find it anymore. have made me very HAPPY!!! Greetings from chile!!
Jaco was breaking out the Suite: Golden Dawn lines from his guest spot on Al DiMeola's first solo album. Sick, sick stuff, I've never heard this particular track before
I WAS THERE ! Al teatro '' Tenda a Striscia'' ROMA , (EUR) . I Was only 21 , che spettacolo!
one Year before Jaco Passed.. JACO is Master Bassist.. .. you can critique .. ?... You can analyze... ?? you will discover the greatest bassist that ever graced the instrument.. Study this master and Love music all over again... !!! thanks JACO.. John Listi
@ThePoulsen the one that is definitve and the classic version is the punk jazz version with hiram bullock ; the one with the 23 second donna lee on it. it gives the coke a run for it's money
Love the performance overall. Jaco is truly amazing. My only nit-pick is that I wish the drummer would have improvd his playing more along with Jaco and the guitarist. Sounds like he's trying too hard to sound like the original, studio recording. Was probably a little star struck playing with Jaco.
Intro too long....My friend Jeff was hanging out with Jaco in Manhattan before he left for Italy...He never saw him again thereafter...Thanks for posting this
I was there then, both Jaco and Bireli were great, not so much the drummer , serge bringolf. A good quality bootleg is available. I listend to it on Amazon prime
Absolutely not. Different types, but the dude can groove. Look up Adventures in Spontaneous Jamming. The whole DVD on TH-cam, and it's 2 hours of Flea improv jamming with Chad Smith. It's an absolutely incredible video.
Nnnn, ... that was from Eddie. Like this guy. Eddie invented it, and others perfectionated it (now that's probably a new English word. :)) Like Yngwie.
❤️HEY. ONE. My heart is your music my soul is stolen გაპარული. This Word has, no translation even on Russion. Meaning later I WILL say, You Will guess. Kiss.
flea is a great bass player!!!! miller too!! pastorius is the father of all the bass players.. pay respect to every bass player that have wonderfull musical ideas!!!!! the style is the most important thing!! not to be faster or better in the slap!. the most important thing is the music, all the rest are people very very boring!!!

Learning the Fretless Bass, Jaco & Percy Jones are my biggest inspirations.
I was there !!! Sublime piece of music
no way!!! :d YOURE LUCKY
Killer version. Stunning intro and powerful performance
Jaco's groove is ridiculous on this! Impeccable.
unreal. i mean there are many other bass legens but none jam like Jaco in my opinion. He keeps it tight and interesting all the time.
GOAT. As a bass player for 30 yrs I couldnt come close to touching this $hit. RIP JACO
Great playing by both artists!!

Bireli really loved Jaco. This track is burning.
Bireli tears it up
love the intro by Bireli!

the best version ever!!
i wanna hear the whole thing!!!!! I woke up this morning super early and was dancing in my room getting ready! LOL and this is all before 730 am.
This was a song in his later career, but it's still godly...
My favourite electric bass player ...
Jaco always loved R&B funk ..... He does a little play on notes @ 4:13 ...... with "Boogies Nights" from Heatwave... before tearing it up and going deep.....
What an amazing bass tone!

Jaco and Bireli get down on this tune big time....!!!!
I am so sentimenal. It's music of my childhood!

I'd like a performance after this.

@MrJazznerd A young Bireli Lagrene here on guitar. :D
jaco the Genius
please upload the rest in a separate video!
I don't see any mention that Bireli is using an echo device to play half the notes up until the Smoke on the Water quote.
sick grooves....
super duper kool,,!!
2.00 smoke on the water!!
Jaco is God.
Well, thanks for uploading, anyway. Luckily I own the cd.
@MikeTheFunkyDrummer people who think Flea is the greatest will never understand masterpieces like this.
Bireli sounds like he's been shedding some Yngwie at the beginning lol.
@ThePoulsen
the one that is definitve and the classic version is the punk jazz version with hiram bullock ; the one with the 23 second donna lee on it. it gives the coke a run for it's money
Probably one of the greatest all out jams I've ever heard!

Bireli is playing really well here (exspecially considering that he was 20) but I can't focus on his playing... I can only hear Jaco

At 4:55 the bass line is cool. Is it from another song?
Love the performance overall. Jaco is truly amazing. My only nit-pick is that I wish the drummer would have improvd his playing more along with Jaco and the guitarist. Sounds like he's trying too hard to sound like the original, studio recording. Was probably a little star struck playing with Jaco.

Jaco Pastorius - Live In Italy
Absolutely not. Different types, but the dude can groove. Look up Adventures in Spontaneous Jamming. The whole DVD on TH-cam, and it's 2 hours of Flea improv jamming with Chad Smith. It's an absolutely incredible video.
Now I understand where Nuno got the idea for 'He man woman hater'
+nicolhaidi "Good artists copy, great artists steal." :) BTW, Bireli outside his usual gipsy setting is FUCKING AMAZING.
Nnnn, ... that was from Eddie.
Kiss.
of course Jaco is the man but Birelli was in the place too...
i agree with PDXBuys. and did any one else notice smoke on the water at 2:01?

He's like the Van Halen of bass.
the entire track makes 13:46, where is jaco solo in the end?
!!
Raccontaci qualcosa di più !!
Please excuse me, I need to go change my shorts...twice
he looks like jamie thomas in this picture.
@countsmokula ah ok...bireli lagrane makes much more sense here;)
umm marcus miller does in fact play finger style very well
I hear a lot of Eddie Van Halen in this piece. Listen to "Cathedral".
Oh yes! Cool though!
anyone knows the name of the song jaco improvises around 4:58?
regards :)
@geures beato te!
see if you can upload invitation
a cursed bass palyer for a blessed music.....
flea is a great bass player!!!! miller too!! pastorius is the father of all the bass players.. pay respect to every bass player that have wonderfull musical ideas!!!!! the style is the most important thing!! not to be faster or better in the slap!. the most important thing is the music, all the rest are people very very boring!!!
But Flea doesn't have "the Groove" check out Marcus Miller.
@cursedswordsman
They shouldn't insult Flea, but Marcus is way more versatile on bass and I don't understmad why you insult Marcus - He can play fingerstyle very well, it's hard for me to understand where did you take from.
