As a keyboard enthusiast since 2010, am glad someone finally made this kind of video. Really shows the hard work creators put into their designs and how the small community supported them in the early days
really enjoyed you going through the history here! There definitely doesn’t seem to be many creators in this space creating this kind of historical content, and it is super entertaining! I just bought some of his black switches and 600+ springs since his products made it to a US retailer, super stoked!
@@Charo.mp4 I really like them! Apparently they’re pretty similar to Zakus (manufactured by tecsee, same material for the top and bottom housing + stem), they’re quite loud, haha
the title should say how custom keyboard design started this doesn't cover QMK, powerful multi layout open source boards like gh60, etc. which IMO is one of the most important thing in the keyboard hobby
I am planning to dispose of 356CL. This is the initial deduction byeonheuk (Cyrillic black axis, switch lubrication, sticker). After the deduction, I assembled it myself and have kept it until now, so it is in brand new condition.
I can’t wait until that Shift Happens book comes out so we get the complete guide of keyboard history. But this video is def a good start before the prequel!
It was an honour to watch this. I have learnt ALOT! I only got into the hobby about a year ago, and have thrived with the hobby, with my current main being the KBDfans tiger80 lite.
Awesome video as usual Charo!! I really learned a lot from this, personally getting into the hobby only a couple of years ago. I didn't realise that Red Alert was inspired by an OG Keycap set, kinda makes me regret not picking up a set... Also the patent illustration for Cherry switches would make such a cool poster...
Love the videos dude, keep up the good work! Just an idea for some videos, would be cool to see one on foam, and flexcuts and lubed switches/stabs, really go through the history of each and their introduction to the hobby.
Cool a documentary, the humble beginnings. We have to thank Razer for pioneering the mechanical switches, they made this precise keyboards popular (support Razer). Razer the father of mechanical keyboards (vintage one like Model F and Apple Extended Keyboard II were the spark). God bless, Rev. 21:4
1:55 - ps2 actually makes much more sense for input devices. The very way it works. USB works by the computer constantly going "hey keyboard, are you doing something? are you doing something? what about now?" with a select interval. PS2 works the other way around, the computer passively listening and the keyboard telling the computer "hey NOW i want you to output X" and it instantly doing it. Have no idea what you mean by "far more restrictive controllers". So there is no issue of polling rates. Plus true multiple key rollover. Also bring back the bezels from the 80's. I feel the slimmer keyboards we've been seeing isn't about preference, it's about taking the easy way out. Anytime we see a keyboard that in itself actually looks great - it's way more popular than those you're talking about. Like 2:19. Looks so much better than anything else in this video. My five (euro) cents.
appreciate your interesting comment and would love to know more about this sort of stuff. so. like... tag in! if you decide to make any content or educational posts like this etc, i'll be here for it.
Is collecting stuff really a hobby? I love watches, knives, keyboards, mice, etc...but I never consider them a "hobby". Just a collection of cool stuff. Mountain biking, video games, disc golf, etc (things that require regular practice and skill) are hobbies to me.
since a lot of people get into the keeb hobby nowdays via youtube videos, i think it's a really important platform to present history like this (for people too busy switch lubing to scroll through old forums and discords), who might not know about the influence of the early korean custom scene. In particular the idea of boards having their case spacing specifically tuned to a type of switch (linear or tactile/clicky) is an interesting concept that hasn't quite caught on, and i sometimes wonder the legitimacy of it.

Thanks mate, they are meant to be real good switches, good pick up!

It goes way further back than that. I can remember people modding old mechs, and Ducky and Das Keyboard mechs around the turn of the century.
Thoroughly enjoyed this history lesson on the custom keyboard hobby, especially as a recently converted cherry purist. Thanks for the vid! :)

for sure!
loved it, I knew minor amounts of this stuff and honestly had no idea there was so much to still learn about the history. You got yourself a new sub
thank you!!
A very detailed history on the hobby, thank you for this really shows how we love rectangle aluminium for a decade now.
Thanks so much!

Yet another banger of a video
