    well explained, I use 11-50T x 32T oval, but I think I could go even smaller down to 28, but that might be pushing it for the top speed, so far top speed is great, I can pedal and go past 50km/h
    but the 50T allows me to climb steep stuff, but the other lower gears are great for when I am on 4th hour and am torturing my self on the way home in summer heat, I did that few days ago.
    it's all about optimizing the setup to your needs, the bike you are riding.
    for me this set up works well so far.
    and yes I use all of the cogs.
    I completely agree with you, but started with way too big chainring at the front and too small cassette, and eventually I ended up with this setup.

    I pimped up a 3 x 9 to a 1x. 38t front and box 11- 50 cassette. Went from a 27.5r mtb to a 29r street flyer.

    29 er here with 10-51 and 30. I’m thankful to be able to double shift when accelerating. On flat ground, I start in 5th which is 28. 7th is 21. Gives me the perfect amount of gap where I am still in my powerband, and I can accelerate quickly. Cars can only beat me across intersections if they hit their throttle hard. That being said, I have many gears I often skip over and do not use. 3rd is 39. I only downshift as I slow to keep rhythm. Even on harder and steeper slippery terrain that I still never go below 3rd. The only time I use 1 and 2 (46) is to joke around about how much I am pedaling and not moving at all. It really is dumb. I would rather have a tighter group from 39 to 9 and maybe 32. Haven’t decided up front yet as I don’t have that much of an issue with top speed. Trying to keep everything smaller too for weight savings. I understand it’s negligible, but also not sure how much room I have. Smaller will fit better.
    I’d rather have 39,33,28,24,21,18,16,14,12,11,10,9 x32

    Trek Marlin 4 has the Rear hub Formula DC31, it will be good if there is a 8 speed 11-42T freewheel available for 1X8 conversion, I cannot find any 8 speed 11-42T freewheel to suit the Rear hub Formula DC31

    Great video. I would go larger on the front but it will hit the chainstay (a Specialized S-J M2). Could shim the crank out, but then chain alignment with large cog out back gets worse. Maybe Im doing something wrong. A Raceface narrow/wide only comes in "even" numbered increments

      Glad you liked it! Yeah the chain rings will be 32/4/6 etc and narrow wide don't normally come in too high a range. And your right a big ring would be further route like on a triple and there isn't enough room to get the chain line happy when it is spaced more centrally. And you dont want to push it too far incase of chainsuck messing your stays! If you liked this then I'd appreciate a subscribe as theres more like this on the channel.

    I just want a 8-55 13 speed with a 38T chainring

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would be monstrous and would probably need a whole new axle/hub standard!

      That 8-55 would work like this for me off the top of my head if I was planning the jumps ...8-9-10-11-13-15-18-21-25-30-36-43-51 but I didn't quite reach your challenge. So, after removing the 10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-20-23 numbers Ive been playing lately inside my "Sheldon Browne online gear calculator", this seems to meet that fantasy 13spd cassette now without having any 25% jumps and there are few above 20% too but I couldn't quite each 55, sorry mate!!! 8-9-10-11-13-15-18-21-25-30-36-44-54, a 55 would make a 25% jump but could work as the bail out gear. Still only 13 gears though, a Rohloff 14spd has even steps of 13.6% but you gotta decide which arm to sell to get one but they're said to last almost a lifetime with some care so it may regrow?

      @@StravaigingMTB Just a few challenges and costs I'd say, maybe my old 54/39/24 or 48/34/20 chainsets could meet that range if one was combined with say a 10-33t Sram 12speed cassette perhaps?

  • @alexv5473

    I was thinking about putting an 11-42 9 speed microshift on the back, the thing is that I don't know if a 38 or 36 chainring will fit in my old-ish (2009) hartail 26er

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good question. If you have a triple up front you can always mount it in the big gear spot as a 42th isn't unusual there.

  • @user-yv2cz8oj1k
    @user-yv2cz8oj1k 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A 40 won't fit on my carbon fibre full suspension bike. It is stuck at a 34 round or 32 oval. Best build that 29er hardtail up for climbing.

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's stuck as in the rear much won't reach the 40 or the cassette itself fouls the frame?

    im new to mtb from a motocross background. have ridden my std 9x 3 setup once and had lots of issues with the chain dropping off. i took vague note of what gears i used more often during that ride and worked out that swapping to a 34 front and 11 - 50 rear would give me almost all the range i had before with bigger ratio ncreases between. hopefully save e clicking through 2 gears at a time like before. just waiting for it to arrive, but im confident i will still have more than enough choice. when i started watching this i was sure you might convince me my choice was wrong!

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11x50 is mighty range and a 34 up front will give you plenty of climbing with enough grunt at the short end of the cassette for most situations. Glad you've found the sport, theres a lot of skills sharing between the two.

  • @prancisfena

    Didn't they (Shimano) go with the 51 because of patent issues with the casette?
    Also, SRAM (IIRC) encouraged users to go up to a 34t (from a 32t) when they start using Eagle.

    • @StravaigingMTB

    Funny Vid. :) I went two years ago from 3x8 to 1x11. I could not for the love of me understand why I would go for a smaller chain ring up front when I also got a bigger cassette 11-42 on my 26" mtb. So I stuck with what the biggest chain ring was up front when it was a triple and even now I must say that 42 at back is still way too easy of a climbing gear. 11 at the rear is still a bit too much for me as I cant peg it for long but I can still spin out if I try. I am trying to find cassettes with tighter steps like road cassettes but they are 1.5mm wider so I am thinking of getting a microspline deore hub, but I dont think there are any tight cassettes for that standard yet.

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you like the vid, it is something I dont get, 36 upfront is about as much as my legs will push on the big climbs and I'm only finding the limit on the road sections where I would be tucking instead of pedalling so it's the right balance for me. If you liked the vid I'd appreciate a sub as there is more on the channel.

      @@StravaigingMTB Looking through your video catalogue right now. Might as well subscribe as I have watched like almost 10 vids by now, I think.
      Well, I use still an 26" and have been cycling all my life but am no monster, I just think that a smaller chain ring on an 26" would not get me anywhere :P And with the big plate back there with the 11-42 is making the 42 up at front like it was even lighter than the smallest chain ring when it still was a triple up front with 28 or 30 at the rear. That is just too slow even uphill. If I am riding the bike slower than I can walk then what is the point. :P

    Dropping from 11 to 10 tooth is 10%ish just the same as going from a 32 to a 36 almost.... No?

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point, the ratios work out as;
      32 x 11 = 2.91
      36 X 11 = 3.27
      32 x 10 = 3.20
      So yes, it equates to roughly the same ratio, this ratio is way easier cheeper to achieve and causes less redundancy through new standards by seeing wide ratio as a cohessive system rather than a single component in my opinion.

    ive always thought 32t ring with 50t cassettes is ridiculous, these super enduro guys complaining they NEED a 50t 32t climber. ive only wanted something more than 42 once, so logically, i went to 11-40 😂. i decided to make a frankenstine 9spd drivetrain to test box's claims. so far so good, it does seem to hold adjustment better and doesnt mishift if absolutely clattering down, but the ratio gaps especially on the road are noticable, so when box uses their 50t to look cool the ratio jumps are probably unusable

    • @StravaigingMTB
      @StravaigingMTB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree! The most reliable drivetrain I had in terms of never needing adjusted was a 10 speed. The more cogs you cram in there the tighter the tolerances and the eaier it is to fall a little out of alignment. I'm an "enduro" guy (kinda) but ride allot of XC so find the 100+ climbing cadence really funny!
