So glad I'm back to watching you guys. Been gone for a couple of weeks. My mom was fighting cancer. She had been so excited by all the new things we are doing and always enjoyed hearing about your videos. I would soak her oatmeal and organic cream of wheat and she absolutely loved it. So thank you for all of the knowledge you share with us.

I have a lot of respect and genuine affection for the Amish community. My mother was Pennsylvania Dutch so I came into contact with the Amish quite a bit over the years. Wonderful people.

Thanks for the tip on the onions! I knew about keeping potatoes covered but didn't know about keeping onions mostly uncovered. Going to try again this year, planting this week.
Thats funny, my parents came from the amish, they jumped the fence. But I have Amish relatives, so I can totally see that happening lol

Nadia Alhosni Ya...you'd *almost* think The Amish were like, Human Beings or something...
The Amish are naturally genetically selected every generation for the most docile types... because those who can't handle submitting to heavy-handed arbitrary rules, won't stay. So every generation, those genes that have a hard time getting along with others, are thinned out. It's "selection of the fittest" for that environment. And those qualities make for nice neighbors.
However, there are other qualities that are inbred... such as secretiveness with things that really ought to be dealt with... and also super-dominant males, and super-submissive females... And in that environment, serious sexual abuse can happen... and does, quite often, among the Amish.
i know, because that's who my grandparents were.
@jezziebezzie - Is that why they do the rumspringa (or whatever it's called) thing? To weed out possible unsubmitters? If not, how do they do the genetic selection? I'm not sure I follow, but you've piqued my curiosity.

I think that was an early 1970s era Ford Torino station wagon. Not many of them around any more.
Look at your wonderful weather! A great story. I also enjoyed your choice of "Homie Video" in this one. I had an old Pontiac Parisienne woody wagon with the back facing seats. I loved it, except when I had to push it!

Love your attitude about the shirt incident, a lot of people would've been angry and I even know some people that would've completely cut off contact because of it. Love that you took it as a humorous accident and let it be a lesson to him not to make assumptions.

I had three heart attacks three years ago. I had S.C.A.D. And a widow makers heart attack. I’m looking to move onto more land again and homestead. You two up lift me and make me want to homestead again. Thank you.

Made my smile. My friend lives in Indiana around the Amish, so she hired some of the young girls to help with her elderly dad. Well they were helping me with the laundry one day, I came around the corner to find my sweet Amish girl pulling the laundry out if the machine and hand wringing it. We had a good laugh and I should her what the machine could do.
Watched half-a-doz videos already, have to say you guys are SO vibrant and delightful! What a wonderful couple you are -- so engaging, personable, outgoing and interesting. W/o meaning to be sentimental, you folks are inspiring for reflecting the rich tradition of rural folky can-do neighborliness (not limited to American attributes) that seems to be in decline. I am going through your video's trying to watch all of them. I don't think I'm hitting them in order but I don't care I'm loving everything I'm learning!! My husband and I met Doug at the Spring Seed Festival at Bakers Creek, Mansfield and thoroughly enjoyed our visit with him!! He was so kind to take the time to teach me a few things about fermentation and even greenhouse siding. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your video's! This happened to me, too. Apparently there is a rash of petty crime whereby Amish folk are going around and randomly burning people's shirts. Fortunately, most of these incidents have happened to shirts that are not being worn at the time. Authorities are still mystified as to the motive behind these heinous acts....

I just love y'all. How funny about the shirt. My daughter and her family live in Lancaster, PA. which (I'm sure you know) is a big Amish area. One of her neighbors (a young Amish couple) is helping her with her first garden this year. I gave my daughter a gift card for Christmas to a major seed seller so she could pick what she wanted plus I sent her a lot of stuff to start them off. They're doing so good. Hubby, kids all are involved. I'm very proud of them. Anyway, she said her neighbors are sweet and the wife just giggles at some of Courts (Courtney, my daughter) questions but is just so helpful. She said, "mom I know she thinks I'm a ding bat but she never says a mean word. Just smiles, encourages me and giggles." I thought that was cute. LOL Thanks for all you do. God Bless.

I love this story! I do believe we should more like the Amish and honor our Father in everything even what we wear. Im sure young ladys dad has to always be on guard the world wants to creep in and destroy. That is a uphill fight. Best of luck to the young lady family and her upcoming marriage!
