Dead Master is such a simple villain. She doesn't bother with grandiose speeches, complex traps, or even mindless minions outside of those giant skulls. She just starts trying to dominate BRS without saying single word about her intentions.The perfect villain for the action-oriented structure of the Other World segments.

I love that even without words, there's such an intense atmosphere and in the end, it still delivered a genuine sentimental moment. Plus it makes it a little more realistic; no monologing just plain demonstration of skill.

Blackbun the cool thing is that they are actually talking to each other. when the camera zooms in on their eyes, that’s them speaking to each other. the only time we see them ever talking is when mato fights black rock shooter
@@brizzlintea346 especially since the way the Otherworld scenes are laid out in the OVA, with them purposely obscuring any dialogue, you wouldn't know why they are fighting or why BRS is seeking DM until you see the ending. Which then makes their silent 'communication' scenes seem as if Mato might be trying to talk to Yomi. It's really interesting storytelling.
Dead Master didn't get hit one time and then gets 1 hit K.O.'d by a hug.

aini sahar lol I felt like BRS was struggling quite a bit throughout the fight. And I don't think she was missing on purpose. If she was, whoever scripted this would've made it more obvious. And at 3:55, I don't think Dead Master would have had to dodge for her life if BRS was trying to miss...haha

I founds the OVA was rather impressive in how it managed to put so much weight into the scenes without speech.
Everything you need to know is shown through body language and action.
A fairly simple psychological premise of trying to help someone who refuses to be saved.
Until the end where they finally realise it and let go of the animosity.
Black Rock Shooter is still one of the coolest things I've ever experienced
Man, Black Rock shooter totally forgot the plot in both the OVA and TV series, but the character designs and their movements/fighting are so fluid (based huke) and the animation for the other worlds where BRS and Dead Master fight is just orgasmic. Also the music is great and I really liked the characters in the TV series.
This is truly an anime that deserves to be watched for its animation and music alone, its characters are also good though a bit melodramatic (I don't really understand why they acted the way they did but its whatever, Mari Okada did the same thing with the BRS TV series in Selector Wixoss and that one is much better IMO). The yuri-tinged friendship between Mato and Yomi also warms my heart.
Totally takes me back.

I can't decide which animation I like more. Both were awesome in their own way.
This one had much better music, and a better design and characterization for Yomi/Dead Master. While the TV series had better fights, more elaborate story, more yuri subtext, and actually used the BRS theme.
I'd say they're about equal.
But at the same time the TV Series explained things better.
That's what I was trying to get at with the "more elaborate story" thing.

This show has some of the best CGI fights I've ever seen.
I kind of love this thing. Black Rock shooter is one of the best Characters implemented. Its like a symbol of new age anime. I feel a bit sad, that it has not the budged to go all out with a long series, with a bit longer episode time. The movie was slightly better, because it explained a lot of things and was still myserious....the series was a bit rushed.
Actually there is an 8 episodes series. Check it out !

You know? It's hard to keep up with BRS media. Every iteration is completely different. In anime, she's the conduit and embodiment of a girl's feelings in another world. In the manga, she's an agent of purgatory tasked with chasing down spirits to send them to either heaven or hell, and her weapon is a shapeshifting talking snake called Rock. And now this, I don't even know what the heck is going on.
Well, it's been said that the game, manga, series and etc are all completely separate. And they all take place in different universes. They have no correlation with the other.
And this video has nothing to do with the t.v series. It's fight scenes taken from the OVA (Which was amazing btw). If you want this video to make sense, watch the OVA. I watched it on TH-cam I believe. Like almost 10 yrs ago maybe?? The OVA is just the concept for everything

Well BRS was originally a Hatsune Miku song that got turned into a game/Ova/anime. So the actual character design is based off her. :)
BRS originally never looked like Miku, but after having the "Black Rock Shooter" song made, creator Huke decided to make her have the similar appearances.
If you look at the BRS Wiki, you'll find the original draft of what BRS was originally supposed to look like.
AngeliqueNade Really? What I heard was that the creator was obsessed with Miku. He drew her, and added extra stuff then BAM.
I don't know if my understanding is correct, but BRS is Mato Kuroi's feeling personified. If Mato currently faced hardships if Yomi, the two's other selves (Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master) battle it out in an alternate reality. When Mato is hurt emotionally, BRS is hurt physically.
In short, there's no need for voice actors since BRS and the other selves are already their emotions.

The one thing i just love about the fight scenes in Black Rock Shooter is that there's no useless banter that just draws away from the action. Here it's just pure slash, shoot, and ask questions later.

That's because this was an a entire OVA about friendship. It fits in with the rest of the story, so it's not like it came out of nowhere if you see it in context.

Well dead master is a form of jealousy that possesses Yomi when she becomes jealous of Yuu's friendship with Mato (in the OVA) :D
Actually, everything started from Huke's drawings. Then the whole concept of Huke's drawings became a song then was made into an OVA then afterwards came two mangas: Innocent Soul and Black Rock Chan. Then the anime series.

The girl who fights with BRS in the beginning with the red eyes is Black Gold Saw. The girl with the green eyes in Dead Master. BGS does not appear in the OVA again after she fights with BRS. She was the one who gave BRS her scars. The rest of the OVA had Black Rock Shooter fighting Dead Master.
@likelihood96 it could also mean BRS was holding back since she might hurt Yomi if she fight for real, plus at the end she rip out of the chain when she could have done it earlier meaning she held back
I think BRS was the first of the characters ryo huke created and being part of supercell, they wrote a song named Black Rock Shooter sung by Hatsune Miku. The other characters came after to expand on the BRS world concept. If this isn't the case, BRS is my favourite and probably has the biggest fan base.
It's crazy how black rock shooter curb stomped jig saw, dead master and chariot in anime series and only had challenge against strength.
In this ova it seems like the other females are way beyond her.
Black Gold Saw is the female teacher in Matto and Yomi's school. She is short hair but used to be long hair when she's a secondary student.

Huh...I just noticed something... BRS's scars on her body, we can assume well that Black Gold Saw gave them to her from their fight in the beginning to the ending.
As seen 0:34, there are no scars. Then (this will be hard to spot, but if you have sharp eyes, you should notice them) at 1:05 just when Gold Saw drops down and BRS stands up, she has the scar under her left breast and after rolling for her sword...
(A sharp pause with perfect timing will help notice this.)

am i the onlyone who notice something.. in brs the ova~ at the beginning in the schoolgirls world is the very beginning ~ well the real world, then.. at the very end of the ova when moka/mota w/e h/e you spell it when she becomes black rock shooter.. is it just me or is that the beginning of the otherworld? thats what i got from it, not that they the other world and the real world was happening at the same time.. yet that they were showing before and after basically of when she became brs
BRS is the most epic anime I've ever seen. Naruto is still my favorite, but BRS is on the same level as Naruto for me....I like BRS a little more from time to time xD

@aidanad95 think about it, it took many months to produce these fight scenes, so for the anime it would cost way too much money and time to make the fight scenes by hand, maybe thats why used 3-D Models for the anime fight scenes

Wow!! I like this Strength version of the end , a shame they dont' continue to this point where she jumps, a thing that mades me sad and angry is that such amazing projects just gets started and never finished😡😢...Although Strength Tv version was my favorite..

There are Black Rock Shooter mangas. They're completely different from the OVA, anime, and game. Though there is a manga based on the game. Personally, I think Black Rock Shooter Innocent Soul is the best and then the game. The anime is similar to the OVA but at the same time, it's different. This is just the fight scenes in this video. Basically Mato's (BRS) friend Yomi (Dead Master) went missing (Dead Master took over her body/soul). So Mato becomes BRS & goes looking for Yomi.
come on dead master you have like 100s of chains you could have maybe beaten her at the end don't just use one!!
Either way BRS would've won. Mato and Yami made up so BRS defeated DM. That world was physically conected to Mato and Yami's emotions.
Following my comment, that's the reason why Mato faced mental trauma when she saw (in her point of view) that she stabbed Yomi which ultimately led in BRS taking control of her and the appearance of Insane BRS. In short, Mato was the reason for her own hardships which led to her own complications with everyone around her AND BRS' ridiculous killing streak. (The OVA is a bit different from the series though)
There are two mangas actually, Innocent Soul and Black Rock chan.
I'm really in dubio in which version was better...the OVA or the ANIME.... I didn't really like the anime in the beginning with the less cool character designs of both Kuroi Mato and BRS, but further into the story it got way darker and more brutal then the OVA ever was.

@Justakez some spoilers The people in the real world pain and suffering is sent to there other self in this world. They fight to keep the real world person from felling that pain(with out them knowing this). BRS real world self tries to carry the pain of everyone else which gives BRS a greater need to fight and she becomes stronger. There are mostly none colored fighters but the stronger ones are given a color and have a bigger effect on the real world. BRS pritty much kills the pain of others
There are a couple of reasons that explained how I.BRS came to life actually.
1. Yuu explained this, BRS thought that she was Mato. Therefore, BRS dealt with Mato's problems (Chariot and the others)
2. When Mato suffered the trauma, she was still aware of what's happening. In the battles of IBRS vs BGS/Strength, Mato could still hold back IBRS blows but IBRS kept hurting herself so Mato can't do anything for long.
BRS never cared/understood Mato. Because in BRS' mind, she was Mato.
I figured it was just because Mato had fused with BRS at basically the worst time, RIGHT when she landed the killing blow on Dead Master and all Mato could see was a girl who looked exactly like Yomi dead by her hand. And since she was fused with BRS at the time, she could feel all of Mato's fear and trauma that Otherselves are never supposed to feel, which gve birth to IBRS.
The reason why they would be in conflict while in the same body, like Mato holding back IBRS's attacks and IBRS shooting herself in the legs to keep Mato in line, is simply because IBRS was unstable and was on the verge of destroying the Otherworld because of her insanity.
Because at the very end, Strength and BRS would say for sure that the whole existence of Otherselves fighting for their human selves is because they love them. So in essence, they do care. It's just that IBRS was severely corrupted because of trauma and lost sight of it. I mean, she literally beat up Mato with her own hands, something Otherselves by nature would never think to do.
In the end, that distinction Mato made to say that 'she isn't BRS' was to establish that she didn't want her pain to be taken on by someone else. It was to claim independence as well as save BRS from that state.
Who else disliked the anime and wished that the OVA had merely been extended?

Correction: The series and OVA version of BRS is the same. Yes, BRS is Mato's alter ego but the connection between humans and their "other selves" was further explained in the series, unlike in the OVA which mostly focused on Mato and Yomi's problems.. BRS was never Mato's stress shield. Actually it's because of Mato's insensitivity that BRS was so focused on killing. BRS fights Mato's guilt for her and to do that, BRS kills the source. BRS was so intent in killing, she thought that she was Mato

@908smileys That is probably more up to the viewer's imagination, because there's a lot between that fight and the Dead Master fight that we don't know... her outfit changes, she gets a gun, and she ends up somewhere totally different. Maybe it will be covered in the anime.

I love the ova a whole lot more then the anime series itself! I mean they drastically changws the character designs for BRS and Dead masfer and decided to use 3D animation. The story line in the ova is much more interesting and I wish they kept the official anime like this. I kinda blame the game for BRS's character design change....
I think those two (BRS and DM) might be the craziest characters I've ever seen...
