    This is in the town I grew up in from just after Chafford Hundred was completed. I knew about the air raid shelter existed and vaguely remember seeing the tunnel that goes between Lion and Warren gorge when I was very young. There are bits of track remains scattered around at the top of some of the gorges too, came across it when out playing as a kid. It's crazy how little information is actually on the web about the Thurrock/Stifford quarries, especially in comparison to how well documented a lot of old quarry railroads are in other places around the UK. It's worth noting that Warren and Lion's gorge were dug out significantly later in the company's lifetime compared to Grays gorge, however. On old OS maps dated for the 1900s the quarry only goes as far as the most southern point of Lion gorge, so it must have been extended up in around the 1920s or so

    Great video. Have lived nearby for years, these woods and the pits where chafford hundred is now was basically our playground growing up in the 90’s. Still remember these tunnels like the back of my hand (well maybe a bit hazy) The one in the woods used to runs through to Titan works in the adjacent pit, it collapsed a few years ago creating a sinkhole in Hogg Lane- apparently the council had no idea the tunnel was there! There was another lesser known tunnel/shelter down the pit near where Warren lane meets Mill Lane in the side of the cliff face. A small tunnel that opened up into a huge room with benches carved into the chalk. Houses are there now so I doubt it’s still there.

    Anyone growing up in Thurrock in the 50's 60's knew that whole area like the back of their hand, we fished camped, swam, played and explored the whole area. Lived overseas for many years but never forget my childhood playground.

    Any tips for locating old maps. When I visited here I only managed to find the tunnel that protruded the cliff. Oh and parking was a nightmare.

      Some good sites are old-maps.co.uk and the National Library of Scotland mapping service

    I wonder what the atmosphere is like during the night? Like what Rob Siddall said about spending a night there, I bet it would be an eye opener. Is it haunted as well? 👻

    • @BeyondthePoint
      @BeyondthePoint  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haunted by the ghosts of excavated chalk I believe 😉

    In one of the tunnels there is a burnt out ford Anglia car and a colony of bats ,thats why the tunnels have had metal gates put in place
