You can't beat the 940! Reliable, comfortable, easy to repair,... I love my black berry pearl 940 estate from 1997. It's my daily driver and has never let me down. It has done 623000km (388000 miles) and it's running on LPG.
Little over 20 years ago about my first Brick, it was a 740, was naturally aspirated but that car got me through everything, I always wanted another Volvo. 2 weeks ago I finally bought a 92 940 turbo from a local dealership because they are hard to find...not because theyre scarcity, its just most owners wont let them go! this one was a great price.... I can't believe the love that has rekindled since i was a kid for these cars... all this time and I can't believe this 31 year old car drives as sound, and as confident as this one does! I will always have one in my garage from here on out.... and I love your 25 mile an hour test...Spot on man, You rock
Great car. They always look better factory stock, clean and original to me. I’m a recent convert. I wanted a wagon, a classic, and something safe. My boxy 940 Turbo Wagon really stood out to me when I first saw it, and I just love it. It reminds me of my high school and college years long ago, and looks unique on the roads among the sea of generic pregnant jellybean crossovers. 218,000 miles and still driving like new. I’ll likely never get rid of it. I’m sure it will outlast me. 😉

One of the best things a person can do to these old Volvos is to soak all seams on the undercarriage with Fluid Film. Also spray it heavily inside the frame rails where the front and rear bumpers mount.
I own a Volvo 740 GL 1989 and she's still going pretty well. My longest trip I drove my Volvo 740 from Melbourne to Sawtell approximately 1,388.2 km and she didn't break down.😊 I got my tires changed recently and the mechanics love seeing retro vehicles in their workshop. She was slow when I fueled up with 91 but swapped over from 91 to 95 or 98. Big difference! 😊 Expensive but keeps the engine running performance well!
I have a 1989 740 GL with 96,000 miles on it... Had never replaced the , strut arm bushings.... Age and wear make the bushings fall apart. If your front end is loose or rough, that bushing replacement made a huge difference. I think age, more than miles, caused the deterioration. Just a thought. I should have replaced the bushings years ago. I"ve owned it since 1993, purchased it from a friend who was leaving the country.

I love my 91 940t sedan 150k miles barely breaking in,7 yr ownership and counting,the turbo redblocks don't feel slow to me and if you want more power you can always do upgrades like cam,bigger turbo/intercooler,ecu chips,bigger injectors,e85. Great video, keep the bricks on the road.
Mine had about 500k km blew a headgasket after overheating it, Replaced it for 20$ at home took 3 hours such an easy car to work on and a lot of fun. Weld the diff and youll have a great drift car.
I currently drive a 760GLE that i bought for $850 AUD. It has 295,000KM on it as of september 31, and it hasn't needed anything since i bought it in july 2022 other than a couple of tires. Best car i've ever owned! :D
Had to leave a comment as a fellow 1994 940 owner! Highly agree on you on 'drivable classic'. I use mine as a daily driver and it never stranded me on the side of the road. I had mine since 2020 as my first car here in South Korea. Nothing on road today looks like 940's sheer boxyness😂 Since I'm in Korea so 9 of 10 cars you see here is Hyundai or Kia.. I get quite a lot of attention for driving mine. Even here RWD Volvo prices are going up. Not there with E34 or E36 or W124s but its on its steady rise I guess. Maybe its because of 70s technology and design being built in 90s makes these look even older than its real age. Only about 1400 examples of 940s has been shipped through 90s over here and since we have such strict law on importing classic cars... you guess. Anyway really enjoyed the whole '9:40' video!

In the past, I owned a couple 244s, a 764 and a 944 turbo. Now, I own a 1994 944 made in Halifax. I also have a 745 1992 b230ft (in an emaculate shape, always been stored during winter, 165 000 kms on the clock, it even has the reversed third-row seats), made in Gent. They are reliable. The 745 is almost like a small pick-up truck, with a closed 7 ft bed when the rear seats are down. You can fit more stuff in it than you could in my friend's 2003 Tacoma. However, they are 30 years old cars. Don't expect to drive them around without spending any money. Unless you like to drive a pile of junk that squeak at every traffic light. For 30 years old cars though, they are 90s Corollas-range reliable (without the rust problems). Especially engine-wise and transmission-wise... Heck, even the heated seats still work in my 944. But hey, in the end, you pay them cash, they're yours (I paid 2 000 $ for each a couple years back). Everytime I look around to get a newer (cheaper on gas) ride, I always look at them out the window and tell to myself: "Meh... Why bother?" I'm pretty sure I could sell my 745 for at least 10k in the current market. Those are becoming rarer and rarer. In a way, I feel kind of sad. Those are the last of the Mohicans in North America. A type of cars that the younger generation will never be able to experiment. A car that you pay cash and drive for many years, without any gimmick. The last reliable european cars, exempt from electronics, that we ever really got (alongside W124s I'd say). Everyday I drive and see people in their shiny new cars... that will probably end up at the junkyard before mines do. They might be around until I can't find the parts anymore... Or until petrol won't be available anymore to the general public. That might come sooner than we thought.
It’s nice to hear about the Volvos that you have enjoyed. I agree, it feels great to have a reliable car that I don’t need to make high payments for. I keep up with the maintenance and it has treated me very well. I’ll be driving it for a long time to come.

@@HonJazzz I'm glad you're still driving your Volvo. Sadly i had to pass on the 940 that i test drove. It drove wonderfully. Had the famous red-block. It was nearly perfect aside from being rusted all around the front window. The coolant system was sketchy. Temp sensor was broken. No pressure on the hoses even after test driving for 20 mins. Possible that the water pump wasn't working, the thermostat was closed shut, or that merely the temp sensor failed. Was a guess i just couldn't make for almost 2 grand. I hope the car isn't ruined now. Also, i apparently have really long legs and the car didn't have enough leg room for me. I would have had to modify the seats if i wanted to fit in the 940. Instead, today, i bought a black 2002 Volvo V70 2.4l 5-cylinder wagon with 215k miles for 2 grand. A purchase that i don't regret. Cheers!
Have a 1992 740 with 493K miles. All original drive train. Never any rebuilds. It's been in my family since new so I know the history very well. It has never left anyone stranded or been on a tow truck. I drive it daily as needed and up to 3000 miles round trip to visit family. I have never known of another car as reliable as this. I perform all maintenance myself. These cars are possibly the most reliable vehicles ever made. Hold onto that gem as long as you can.

@@HonJazzz Yes they definitely were!!!! Another thing I forgot to mention is the headrests. They are perfectly positioned in these cars. I've never experienced a better placed headrest. I have to be careful not to get too comfortable and fall asleep on long trips!!!
I bought a ‘93 945 for $350. Needed new steering rack and new tires. Bought 2 years ago, have put about 10,000 on it to 235k miles. AC does not work. Needed new blower motor to keep heat running well. Start idle is getting rough. So many things that could cause that, but going in for a January tune-up. Plugs, wires and dist cap at a minimum. Oh, and driver side key lock has shut down. Can’t lock car. Have had 94 945, 97 844, 94 964 (loved that car!) and 94 855T. But I think this 93 945 will be my last Brick. Unless I pony up for a 100,000 240 at like $10k.
I have a 91 Volvo turbo wagon. Replacement for the one my teenage daughter totaled in 2006. My girlfriend calls it a clunker. I tell her it clunks with regal authority that lesser cars lack.

Although I prefer the 740 in many ways, the 940 is probably the best car period! And highway driving? The 740/940 is an awesome highway cruiser, always feel relaxed after a long drive, as well as always feeling well planted and easy to drive.
Love my 95 940 wagon, somewhere around 500k miles now (odometer broke 15 years ago ~220k), still has a lot of pep (b230ft) factory turbo. I also have an '89 240 wagon NA Built b230f + 16v, will add a turbo in the future. I'll eventually t5 swap my 940 when I find a donor 850R/s70R engine, LS swapping was a thought but I want to keep Volvo purity.
Awesome! Sometimes I wish my car was a turbo wagon. I still enjoy it for what it is though. Definitely keep it Volvo! I feel like the LS swaps are boring.

if you are over revving on a motorway you have a problem , they are great on motorways and certainly dont need to be over revved , if i recall right its around 2500 to 70 mph in 5th or over drive , manual gearbox
Hold on to it tight, i live in Sweden and i own a 940 94' sedan. As for the price, the same can be said here in Sweden. You don't see that many old volvos that are used by "ordinary" people anymore, but rather they are used by "enthusiasts" who knows a thing or two about woring on cars. Most of the old volvos here in Sweden are used by people associated with the "raggare" culture. Or "Amis culture" as i belive they are called in Finland. (but correct me if im wrong about the "Amis" thing)
@@robins4209 Yes the term "raggare" I know. Also the term "amis". Back in the days there used to be a finnish-Swedish version, "rakkari". But yes, this is how it goes. Old Volvo 740, 940 are banged around by guys who have no teeth or education. Btw...pristine 240 would be a 10/10
"Revving it out to keep up with modern traffic." With the AW70L transmission and a 3.73 final drive ratio differential mine turns 2,400rpm's @100kmh. Hardly "revving it out". I find it to be a very good highway car. And that's after more than 20 years of owning it. Btw, I owned an '86 240 GL from '93 to 2006 with the same engine/transmission/differential combo. So, I have almost 30 years of on- the-road experience with these models.
Interesting, thanks for sharing that. Mine is a little over 3K at 75mph. It’s fine there but I don’t like to push it beyond that for extended periods. US highways are so fast. I feel like everyone is going at least 85mph now.
@@HonJazzz Yes, I know what you mean! I guess no one is concerned anymore about saving fuel or saving lives. Your vehicle's gas mileage drops drastically at those speeds and so does your survivability if you should be involved in a crash/collision. Something to keep in mind. Where I live the speed limit is 55mph. So, I don't have a lot of experience driving at the speeds that you are talking about. A few years ago, I drove on I-95 in North Dakota. The speed limit was marked as 75 and I did 80. My 740 with the same drivetrain as yours felt fine at that speed, but I know my gas mileage was suffering. I didn't want to be pulled over by a state trooper, so 80 was fast enough for me. lol I'm sure the car would be fine at higher speeds. The original owner told me he drove it at 100 on a trip to Florida with his family shortly after he bought it. With a 6,000 rpm redline and maximum horsepower @5400 and max torque @2750 these engines are built to handle high rpms.

Volvo still supports a lot of things for these cars. Parts in the US are easy to find online at sites like rockauto. I just kept up with maintenance. Timing belt, oil, and tires.
If you ever travel to Sweden esspecially the northern part you’ll see so many old, very old and too old Volvo’s that you’ll get sick of them. (Don’t be shocked by How slow the ”tractor” volvos are. ”EPA” search it)
Growing up my parents had a 1994 Volvo 940... Had it when we use to live in Germany...My folks had it shipped from Sweden .. we also drove to Anchorage Alaska from Jacksonville Florida, only a 940 can make that trip..
Just bought mine 04/29/22 from a 1 owner 99k miles 000 rust for $500 But the car has not run since 2016 There is no power to fuel pump! I check fuse 11 with continuity from chrome ignition to 11 fuse and is grounded. Can somebody help?
@@HonJazzz It's sad. I'm not even mad at the boomers that drove up the prices, I'm mad at the kids that trashed them FOR NO REASON. People used to drive these things into walls, skid them into walls, sit on the rev limiter for 15-20 minutes in neutral etc. There used to be so many of them and now they're almost rare :(
@@tracklizard4018 There's a guy on here - 'Drifts N' Lifts' - who basically buys them to wreck them. He's a one-man wrecking crew of red blocks and is making it very difficult to find a good one in the B.C. area. Very sad!
I'm going to tell you I'm going to do right now if you get a service and maintain right everything checked service and so forth the the Volvo 940 from 90 to 96 and get them tune and Dyno tune and so forth they will be and the injectors calibrated and cleaned and maintained and so forth including the transmission and all and get it Road ready go back to the way it was when it was new don't be negative on that
Always loved Volvos and Saabs more than super cars growing up. Still do. Finally bought my first Volvo last month. 03 s80. Typical Volvo fashion needed some work, a new cat and purge valve. Driver window doesn’t open and sunroof doesn’t open but the interior is perfect aside from the slightly worn front seats. I wanna turn it into a rally car I seen a guy turn one into. Gotta love Swedish bricks 🥹

Had a 92 940 turbo wagon. Great car. 28-30mpg on the road. Cruise all day at 75 with no problem. Now have a 2002 V70T which is also a great rig.

Unless I pony up for a 100,000 240 at like $10k.

Replacement for the one my teenage daughter totaled in 2006.
My girlfriend calls it a clunker.
I tell her it clunks with regal authority that lesser cars lack.

Although I prefer the 740 in many ways, the 940 is probably the best car period! And highway driving? The 740/940 is an awesome highway cruiser, always feel relaxed after a long drive, as well as always feeling well planted and easy to drive.

Love my 95 940 wagon, somewhere around 500k miles now (odometer broke 15 years ago ~220k), still has a lot of pep (b230ft) factory turbo. I also have an '89 240 wagon NA Built b230f + 16v, will add a turbo in the future. I'll eventually t5 swap my 940 when I find a donor 850R/s70R engine, LS swapping was a thought but I want to keep Volvo purity.
Awesome! Sometimes I wish my car was a turbo wagon. I still enjoy it for what it is though. Definitely keep it Volvo! I feel like the LS swaps are boring.

Washington state also has a surprising amount of Volvos, I mainly see 240s but I’m sure others are plentiful

@@HonJazzz I was looking for a 240 and having no luck, like there were listings that had been up for months and then as soon as I got the funds, boom. Gone. I just picked up a 91 940 GLE, and honestly think I made a better choice and couldn’t be more stoked.

if you are over revving on a motorway you have a problem , they are great on motorways and certainly dont need to be over revved , if i recall right its around 2500 to 70 mph in 5th or over drive , manual gearbox

Those cars are great, just updated version of the classic 240. Nowadays these bricks are worth 3000- 10000 euros in Finland.

Here in Finland, no chance finding one of these under 2K these days😕 Some great examples go for 6K, even 8K! They are really going up in value.

As for the price, the same can be said here in Sweden.
You don't see that many old volvos that are used by "ordinary" people anymore, but rather they are used by "enthusiasts" who knows a thing or two about woring on cars.
Most of the old volvos here in Sweden are used by people associated with the "raggare" culture. Or "Amis culture" as i belive they are called in Finland. (but correct me if im wrong about the "Amis" thing)

"Revving it out to keep up with modern traffic." With the AW70L transmission and a 3.73 final drive ratio differential mine turns 2,400rpm's @100kmh. Hardly "revving it out". I find it to be a very good highway car. And that's after more than 20 years of owning it. Btw, I owned an '86 240 GL from '93 to 2006 with the same engine/transmission/differential combo. So, I have almost 30 years of on- the-road experience with these models.
Interesting, thanks for sharing that. Mine is a little over 3K at 75mph. It’s fine there but I don’t like to push it beyond that for extended periods. US highways are so fast. I feel like everyone is going at least 85mph now.
@@HonJazzz Yes, I know what you mean! I guess no one is concerned anymore about saving fuel or saving lives. Your vehicle's gas mileage drops drastically at those speeds and so does your survivability if you should be involved in a crash/collision. Something to keep in mind.
Where I live the speed limit is 55mph. So, I don't have a lot of experience driving at the speeds that you are talking about. A few years ago, I drove on I-95 in North Dakota. The speed limit was marked as 75 and I did 80. My 740 with the same drivetrain as yours felt fine at that speed, but I know my gas mileage was suffering. I didn't want to be pulled over by a state trooper, so 80 was fast enough for me. lol I'm sure the car would be fine at higher speeds.
The original owner told me he drove it at 100 on a trip to Florida with his family shortly after he bought it. With a 6,000 rpm redline and maximum horsepower @5400 and max torque @2750 these engines are built to handle high rpms.

How hard are parts to find and what mechanical issues has it had?
Volvo still supports a lot of things for these cars. Parts in the US are easy to find online at sites like rockauto. I just kept up with maintenance. Timing belt, oil, and tires.

If you ever travel to Sweden esspecially the northern part you’ll see so many old, very old and too old Volvo’s that you’ll get sick of them. (Don’t be shocked by How slow the ”tractor” volvos are. ”EPA” search it)

Growing up my parents had a 1994 Volvo 940... Had it when we use to live in Germany...My folks had it shipped from Sweden .. we also drove to Anchorage Alaska from Jacksonville Florida, only a 940 can make that trip..

@@HonJazzz It's sad. I'm not even mad at the boomers that drove up the prices, I'm mad at the kids that trashed them FOR NO REASON. People used to drive these things into walls, skid them into walls, sit on the rev limiter for 15-20 minutes in neutral etc. There used to be so many of them and now they're almost rare :(

Always loved Volvos and Saabs more than super cars growing up. Still do. Finally bought my first Volvo last month. 03 s80. Typical Volvo fashion needed some work, a new cat and purge valve. Driver window doesn’t open and sunroof doesn’t open but the interior is perfect aside from the slightly worn front seats. I wanna turn it into a rally car I seen a guy turn one into. Gotta love Swedish bricks 🥹
