Since French television did not record this extraordinary concert (unlike the 2011 concert), I will try to describe Natalie Dessay's performance. Seeing her is as important as hearing her.
When she arrived on the stage at the Théatre des Champs Elysées and received a round of applause, she prepared to sing. She stood on the stage as if she'd grown into it. Those few seconds were enough and we had before our eyes not a "singer who came to sing the aria", but a dramatic character whose message will be fatal. Then Natalie Dessay began to sing with great concentration. How much purposeful energy she put into this one aria! It was as if she were sculpting a character of Alcina - her anger, her explosiveness, her desire for revenge. She was a majestic ruler - struck by Ruggiero's betrayal, but unconquered. Let me use the analogy: this Alcina was like an eagle circling in height and about to attack its prey without mercy. The orchestra under the baton of Emmanuelle Haïm perfectly supported Natalie Dessay in this interpretation.

She’s still got it ! Fantastic live rendition. The technique and breath control are as ever phenomenal, not to mention the drama! Great and unique artist. Thank you so much for sharing.

I haven't kept up with Dessay since she retired from the operatic stage. I guess I assumed that she had also retired her operatic repertoire, but for her to still be singing it - and singing it this well - is a wonderful surprise. Her voice sounds much better preserved than Damrau's.

Natalie Dessay does not own this TH-cam channel. But she doesn't plan to return to the opera.

Very interesting to her descend into her chest voice from the high notes.
