even when he was being an Edge Lord, it was a facade. He does care, he just pretends he doesn't. He tries to be as awful and unapproachable as possible so that he doesn't have to worry about making connections with other people that he'll lose, the same way he lost the band of the hawk. You can see this at the end of the Black Swordsman arc when you see his mask slip and he starts crying. He isn't an Edge Lord. He's pretending to be one.

    • @WolffangPL
      @WolffangPL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +483

I mean that is kind of how real life "edgelords" work. The truth is most of the assholes and mean spirited people you meet along your way are likely just deeply traumatized and they try to consciously push everyone away or cant control emotion, but sadly in most cases you cannot help them. But this is why berserk is so genius. Every character has a lot of depth and it shows human psychology very well.

The subversion is more in guts archetype. Hes the big dark fantasy brute but every aspect of that archetype when applied to guts is backed with meaning and deep character progression.
Hes one of few characters like that who gives in depth purpose for being the way he is and its made all the better by that purpose being realistic and reflecting the process of living trapped in the mental scarring of traumatic experiences.Very serious and very real experiences like sexual assualt, rape, neglect, or death.

Kratos and Guts are pretty similar in their stories. The two were consumed by rage to get their revenge. Both, over time, because of several events that happened to them, they mature more and more, to the point that their "past versions" are very different of their future selves... Now, both characters are always looking to be better than they once were. The two characters are the most badass characters and their stories, in my opinion, are the best I've seen in the last decade. Surelly, two amazing characters that we have in all fiction. It's not subversion, it's development. The reason the term "subversion" got so popular is because we got used to template of flat characters that don't change or develop in meaningful ways that have been churned out.
If you read Berserks oneshot he's the same edgy guy but you tell he has a good nature by the end. What Miura did was draw upon his influences to deepen Gut's character, something that current writers have problems with implementing in a meaningful way.

The first episode of the original incarnation definitely paints a certain version of guts, granting you “expectations” of who the character is. The subsequent character arc goes about defeating the original expectation, but only if you assumed incorrectly.
You see it’s impossible to say rather the man is right it wrong since the expectation is subjective to the individual. Some people may have expected a thrilling character arc for example.
The original is from 1997 I believe, and anime heroes were far less known or popular at the time. So I doubt there were many expectations for the character at all, especially not after one episode.
However it is worth noting that his personality, not his backstory but his personality, is way more developed than with someone like Sasuke, who obviously received loads more screen time.

I think the reason why he’s a good edgy character is because that edginess is just a defense mechanism to keep people away from him. It’s not that stereotypical “lone wolf” who just spouts pessimistic nihilism bullshit because they think it’s cool (though I do like parodies of those archetypes like cid kagenou). He’s a person who’s literally cursed with evil every night and to have other people around him puts them at risk too.
I’ve thought about it for a while, “why is Guts such an appealing character to me.” And to me I think it’s because he’s admirable and in a way inspirational. He’s been through so much shit and suffered both mentally and physically and despite that he picked himself up and kept on going. It’s the kind of person I wish I could be, one who keeps fighting the seemingly hopeless life he lives in and eventually find his hope. He’s never been fully consumed with despair and given up, he just suffered through it and eventually he’d pick himself up again and keep going. That kind of fortitude isn’t easy to come by, especially in this day and age. So in a weird way berserk is an optimistic story.
I guess I just like that kind of character archetype in general.
I also like driven character traits, like those who do everything in their power to protect those they care about which is a character trait Guts develops in the series as well.

These're exactly the same circumstances that Kratos from gow had to face and even succomb to several times( but at unfathomably higher degree. He later on goes to seek his vengeance and obliterates the greek pantheon and finally stabs himself with the blade of olympus to and releases all the the power of hope that he collected from Pandora's box to humanity).
And in the new gow games Kratos has embraced the path to becoming a better person, opening his heart to the world, and set a example to inspire his son to be the best person he can.
Ngl, apart from the battle scenes and gameplay, the GOW storyline is pure emotions. Not to mention that he's the strongest frictional character in all of history.

  • @gamingxjuan9893

I agree and disagree and the same time. The edgy cynical outlook he has on life is merely something he’s made up to protect himself emotionally, it’s a conscious decision he’s made for himself which we can see when his mask breaks by the end of the black swordsman arc. Most edgy characters genuinely believe in their ideals, and have developed a mentality like that through tremendous amounts of betrayal and pain.
