- New Zealand writer-director Taika Waititi's rollicking World War II satire centers on a German boy, an aspiring young Nazi, who fantasizes about his best buddy Adolf Hitler while discovering his mother is harboring a Jewish girl in their house. Everyone is talking about people being uncomfortable with the film... Who are all these people? I haven't seen one bad review about this film yet.
i think it was the initial reaction to the trailers...when I first saw the trailers I was worried that it might be insensitive. Then I watched the film and I loved it, and found that they managed to do it very tastefully and respectfully :)
The neo-Nazis don't like the film
There are bad reviews, go read them. But won't make you feel any better about it or worse because who cares? Taika got the Oscar!! Ahhh Wooo!
Right? There's really nothing polarizing about it IMO unless you're in a country where there is extreme censorship like modern Germany and showing a swastika is banned. I mean it's a funny movie, there's nothing overtly political about it, I don't get it. It's my favorite film from last year, maybe in the last few years.

This film is historically significant - highly recommended.
Honestly did the interviewer even see the movie?? Jojo rabbit was so full of heart and hope and truly inspired me. Her questions just seemed like obvious virtue signaling smh

There is something about Tracy that puts people off! There are constant complaints about her in the comments section of the CBS Sunday Morning uploads.
It’s because she represents everything we hate about the media. She is ignoring the truth of this movie and what it means (she doesn’t care probably) and is just hyping up the controversy side of it because she just cares about views.
You don’t get journalism. They are not personal questions they are questions to provoke answers from what most people think about certain subjects.

She couldn’t even hide her disdain when she asked about his first film being nominated for an Oscar, 6:55. And he humbly answered with a simple, “Yeah.” Makes me love him even more. Congrats on your Oscar and BAFTA, Taika!

That's some weird projection, if that's your takeaway. This segment is basically a fluff piece.
Rosie is one of those rare truly well-written female characters that art (and society in general) desperately needs more of, it must have been a true joy for Scarlett to play her.

My wife and I watched the film today with our 11 year old daughter and after it was over we had an incredible conversation about WW2, the Nazis, the atrocities they committed and what was at stake for the world as a whole. I think that’s only a positive.

This lady should not have been the one conducting the interview when it's clear how she feels about the subject matter with her constant eyebrow raising and judgmental tone. It's funny how obvious she is about it too....

I discovered as a boy the scope of what can be laughed at. Our family went to visit my grandfather in Cleveland. It was when my grandfather tried to console me after I was told he was dying of cancer. He put his hand on my shoulder, smiled and said, "Mike, I've had a great life and besides, I will no longer be tormented by the Indians."
I really like him. I hope he wins an Oscar.
He should hopefully get it for adapted screenplay.

Taika is a genius for creating this and I thought Scarlett was phenomenal in her role.

It's not a comedy. Ugh. It's funny-sad. Something Taika is known for. Ya'll crazy.
When you really think about all the Monty Python films, they're sad too, but they're still comedies

It was the funniest movie I saw all year. It was also the saddest movie I saw all year. That's incredible for a movie to be able to pull that off!
Covered every emotional spectrum. When a certain unmentioned scene happened an audible gasp was heard from the entire audience when I saw it.
Yeah, a lot of European comedies are like that, too.
In fact, I believe the original Greek definition of comedy was a lot broader than what we tend to think of as comedy today.
It's funny that Mel Brooks is one of his heroes because Brooks was also asked why he would make a movie about Nazis and he said almost verbatim the same thing as Taika. "One way of taking power away from those people is to laugh at them. To make a mockery of them" - Taika Waititi.
I’m yet to see Parasite, but definitely the best film of the season so far. Had me literally crying and laughing at the same time. Stunning film. Hope it gets some Oscar glory.

My favorites are 1917, endgame and parasite. But jojo was so great as well (as a jew)
jojo rabbit reminds me of parasite, it has comedic values and has suspense and tons of different genres in the film. They also tackle about society
Parasite was good but JoJo was better in my view.
I love Parasite the best movie to come out in the last decade. Totally unique in every way.

'Jojo Rabbit' is brilliant. In a time when nationalistic xenophobia is rearing its ugly head again, this film is just what's needed.

@@fabiancalderon6729 No one thinks it's the only answer. But satire can also be a revolutionary act - when art speaks truth to power. Some people will always want to blame and punish others. But this is a good reminder that children often mimic the adult world, and it's up to good people to teach their children otherwise.

oh lord.... what an awkward interview with awkward questions... of course nazis are horrifying!! the one who asks the questions havent seen the film...
I haven't even seen the film (yet) but at that point I just thought "why are you even asking this, people were making fun of the Nazis _at the time,_ why shouldn't they now?"
I'm Czech. Boy did Czechs ever make fun of the Nazis and the occupation and the war. K.H. Frank called Czechs "laughing beasts" because of that; we took it as a compliment and a badge of honour and ran away with it. So my immediate reaction, beside the above, was also exactly what Taika said about mocking the scary and powerful, before he said it, and like, what kind of sad existence do you lead (or assume your viewers lead) that you even need to have that pointed out to you in the first place? OF COURSE that's how you deal with scary things, _duh._
This is why celebrities hate press junkets.
Scarlett is so special. Natural healthy looking female actress, rare in Hollywood.

I really dig NZ comedy. NZ Today, Flight of the Conchords, Anti Drink-Drive Legend Ad. The country just seems to create introspective, satirical, fun-loving people.

I hate when ppl refer this movie as a Film about make joke about Nazi's! Its much more then that, it has heart, and meaning wich is more important.
It deserved to win. such a powerful movie with a beautiful message and great acting and writing!

feels like Waititi will go down as one of the legendary directors of our age.
The thing with “insensitivity” is that intent is the most important thing. Yeah, this movie would’ve been quite horrifying if they were truly trying to make fun of people dying and getting injured etc. They weren’t doing that. People still lived lives in ww2, despite all the death. It’s easy to forget that. And this is a comedic depiction of those lives
Someone introduce this interviewer to the works of Mel Brooks and Monty Python.
This and Knives Out were my favorites this year.

I watched Jojo Rabbit on my history class and at that time I had no idea who Taika or Scarlett were, and then some time after I started watching the marvel movies. After I watched Avengers I was like I’ve seen her before, I had no idea!!😂
Amazing, brilliant film and the satire is biting. Makes me cry every time I watch it. Largely because my mother was JoJos age at the end of the war and suffered greatly. To this day she says the happiest day of her life was when the American tanks rolled into town.

Congratulations on his success. Flight of the Conchords was one of my favorite shows and it took me a couple of months after the release of Thor: Ragnarok to find out that Taika directed a few episodes from the show.

I loved Scarlett in this movie. Ive never really liked anything else shes done except marvel and this is by far the best performance shes done in my opinion.

Let's not forget that Tarantino made Inglorious Basterds that is now considered a classic now and by far cinematically inferior to Jojo Rabbit.
The film ended up making me more sad than happy, great film however theres two scenes i wont spoil it for those who dont know that really surprised me and left me feeling down.

I was suprisingly moved by this movie. Definitely, a "must-see."
This is one of the best movie I've seen, and I watched it like 10 times and still makes me laugh and smile. One thing bothers me is, what Jojo is gonna do after that, he's just 10 years old and live all alone in a mess of a just ended war...poor little guy...the interviewer sucks by the way, she's obviously a political reporter

Academy's system lacks integrity and most awards don't mean much, nowadays. Anyway, everyone's perspective varies and judging art is a moot point. Main thing is how those involved w/the project feel, and what the fans think (financials do matter otherwise filmmakers go broke and can't produce), and the artist's peers. I agree w/Taika.
I agree, apart from that I don't think it's any different now than before. Competing in art has always been dumb as it's entirely subjective and no consensus will ever matter more than one's own opinions.
