I was teaching airline management in Haiti a few years ago. I mentioned how missions would be a source of income for them and they got mad. The airline had 3 airplanes that they could fly anywhere but they said that MAF was stealing business from them instead of supporting a local business. The cost of MAF was 10 times higher than chartering that airline to do their flights. They said lots of bad things about everything mission. They said that people would go there to build churches and spend thousands of dollars in airplane tickets, meanwhile lots of Haitians needed a job in construction. They said that they could build a church with $20,000 meanwhile people spent $60,000 in airplane tickets to go there. I believe the biggest mistake in US missions is to send Americans instead of supporting the local people. Many years ago, I was in South America helping a group of 25 Americans that went on a mission trip to build a church. The local guy asked me how much the Americans spent on tickets and other costs to go there. I said around $50,000. He said that with $10,000 he could hire 3 experienced guys from the local church that were unemployed and finish the job in half of the time the 25 Americans took to do. Why MAF don't train local pilots? Americans travel 5,000 miles to do missions and don't visit their neighbors. Lots of international students in US universities never get a visit from a church. A friend that was a financial guy for a mission organization said that 70% of the money was wasted in administration and only 30% got in the hands of the people that really needed.
