Almost 2000 mi on my 09 VMax (about a month so far) and this bike is the most fun I've had on a bike by far. Some previous bikes incl CBR600, 07BuellXB12,07FZ1,09FZ6R. I love every thing about this bike. It sounds great, looks great, handles great for its size, and the engine is just awesome! Totally relaxed power, but you can unleash hell at moments notice. Shaft is great, no mess, no chain lash. No need for 6 speed either. You can fly your fav twisty and never leave 3rd gear (25-115mph).
I owned a 92 VMAX that I really enjoyed for what it is. A muscle cruiser that is great in a straight line, but a brick in the corners. The 2009 VMAX has more power, torque, and handling is superb.
I have owned 2 vmaxes, and they have been SCREAMING for a 6th gear since day one, not for top speed, but for a lower rev at highway speed. That would also allow the 1,2 and 3 gears to be lowered a bit, which would help launch. They eat clutches after a few hard launches.
u r missing the point.... Busa is a hyper sports motorcycle designed for speed Vmax is all about feel of riding. these 2 r completely different machines. u cant really compare.
a big part of biking is the freedom, i think you refer to sportsbikes and people who want to race, not all motorcycles are designed or meant to be raced, it depends what you want from a bike, thats why they dont just have zx6r's and r1's etc. not everyone cares abiut weight or power, it all depends what you want from a bike
truely is a nice bike for its class. would love to have one but still paying on my bike. and whats up with all these guys arguing down there. hey ..hey ..you guys down there take it to the track
@tomek13072 You're smoking crack. Go ride one and you'll understand. I ride both a Ducati and Harley tourer and this new V-Max could EASILY replace both of those bikes in my garage. If HD had made the V-Rod like this new V-Max, I wouldn't have sold mine.
Not a cruiser, it's a standard like the Triumph Tiger or Suzuki B-King... mid mount controls on a cruiser aren't bent back like that, great motorcycle, definitely not a cruiser though.
If I cared about naked power I'd go with the B-King. I nearly shat myself when I saw 80-90 miles per tank. Jesus God, you could never leave the city limits on this damned thing...
No its not a cruiser at all. The fuel tank is too small to go anywhere, the seat is like the old version, humped rather then flat so that hurts your ass. And the 5 speed makes it to twichy at road speeds to be comfortable in any way shape or form. You want a decent cruiser get an M109 and you have decent power and comfort too. Yamaha tried to make a cool lookin power bike, too bad its too heavy and behind times to compare to the others out there that are cheaper too yet. What a bummer Yamaha
are you sure you dont need a 6th gear on this bike ? because i ride a vstar 650 and the 5 speed sucks ! i mean i love the bike ot death but on the highway, it just begs for another gear ! ive ridden other bikes too, for example my sisters 2012 harley vrod muscle, tons of power and fast as fuck! but also a 5 speed, i kinda wish it had a 6th gear just to cruise on the highway. so 2 questions, does engine vibration kill you at highway speeds and does it really eat a ton of gas or is that BS?thanks!
I owned the original also, and enjoyed it for what it was as well. This new one is a joke in comparison. Sure it has more power, but handling? Haha you can't take a corner with this pig because the pegs drag! Its so damn heavy that it feels like my original with a passenger on the back! Fuel miliage is so bad that you have to plan your trips from gas station to gas station. Get used to 80 miles to a tank! Thanks Yamaha for screwing us when you can get a much better B-King for much less $
I know quite a few people that are very upset over this particular bike. The answer why is because companies like Yamaha and Harley are focusing on bikes for the uneducated poser wanna-be rather then the actual enthusiast riders. I have heard every excuse under the sun for the extra weight and unwanted driveline features. None of which are true. You can more then bet that things will be changing, I am not the only one that is upset. This type of bike sets the entire industry backwards.
I love V-max, but man... I don't like the headlight of the new V-max... looks like a bit V-rod. Now I think of it, Harley might copied the name V-rod from V-max. I wish new V-max had VTX look alike big long head light, then I say it looks perfect. I guess, that look is hip now eh? like B-king. I don't know what's going on in Japan.
Too bad you're disappointed... I'm not! The 2009 VMAX, which I have 700 miles on so far is the new definition of muscle cruiser. Yamaha listened to everyone that participated in the online survey for the new VMAX. The bike handles beautifully and has more power and torque then any bike I have ever ridden. You don't like it....OK... find something you do like and move on. Bitching about a very well thought out design and function for an amazing motorcycle accomplishes nothing productive.
Yes I have. Trying to dismiss my "bassless" opinion because I haven't seen or riddin one is as off base as Yamaha making the over weight overpriced pig in the first place. I am upset because I used to own the original. I rode it for 13 years. At that time it was already outdated and Yamaha proceeded to continue production until it was so ran in the ground dealers quit ordering any. FINALLY they decide to reintroduce it again only 10+ years too late, and didn't listen to a word anyone suggested.
i was so set on this bike liek no tomorrow until i heard 5 speed, that kills me, i wish they wouldve made it a 6 speed, you would get better fuel economy and not only that, you wouldnt get all that crazy engine vibration at highway speeds like you do with all other 5 speeds, this sucks, and i really liked that bike too =/
Don't feed me or anyone else this bullshit! Yamaha didn't listen to anyone. If they would have listened to us they would have heard us ask for Inverted forks, CHAIN DRIVE, 6 speed transmission, a decent fuel tank and less weight then the original not 100 lbs more yet! "its a new definition of a muscle cruiser" Yeah when it came out in 85' now its a New definition of a posermobile for the uneducated. Read the information out there folks and tell Yamaha to shove this new version!
is there any bike these guys don't think it's perfect. I mean..they only talk about the good things of the bike...I'm pretty sure this bike is not 100% perfect....I think they're getting paid
You have issues. How much does "Star" pay you to represent and defend this bike? You have no answers to my postings, you can just spew this crap. The points I have made with this bike are nothing but truthful and sometimes the truth hurts. Its time we stand up to these big companies and demand they make better products rather then buying blindly because of the name on the side of it. This blind loyalty is exactly what these companies want, stupid and blind shell out your cash for an image.
Have you ridden one maxrider? Sounds as if you have not ridden the new VMAX, or seen one in person. Until you have, your opinion is baseless and without merit.
I have to laugh how Yamaha is taking the focus off their name and trying to Americanize the name calling their bikes "Star" I guess they think everyone is stupid. Yamaha went after the image posers, rather then the riders. They are pushing over priced under spec bikes that will not compare to what else is out there for less money. Watch the upcomming comparison tests to see this Vmax get its ass handed to it by other less expensive bikes in every way. Handling braking and acceleration.

The big rear tyre and the way the cans stick out makes it look superb from the rear view!
I'm officially impressed! The new V-Max makes anything coming from Milwaukee look puny by comparison!

That being said, I am currently riding a Raider, which I am contemplating trading for a G-2 Max. I LOVE 'em.
just amazing , one of the most beautiful bikes ever made

i dont care what people say I have one and im very happy with my bike , it a great machine!!!!!
It's the star line of Yamaha motorcycles.
Great review
At least you could justify the price on this VMAX
Finally an update to the Vmax, too bad the
price is so insane for what it is.
u r missing the point....

I ride my 1700 every chance I get, great bike.
I love my Gen 1. Warts and all...
I wondering if theres going to be a large after market for the '09 Vmax?
yamaha should build a sport bike with this motor to compete against the hayabusa and the zx-14, awesome bike!!!
truely is a nice bike for its class. would love to have one but still paying on my bike. and whats up with all these guys arguing down there. hey ..hey ..you guys down there take it to the track
awesome
