Great video mate. I’ve just thrown a used pump in my rodeo and I can’t get fuel to the injectors. I have power to the pump and I lined up both timing marks and threw a bolt in the scissor gear. It’s almost like the internal shutoff solenoid isn’t letting fuel past. Fuel is primed up to the pump but not even a drip at the injector lines, which are all cracked open. I can’t have it 180degrees out of time, can I? I would assume it’s not possible as long as the timing marks are correctly aligned. I’d assume even if it was out, fuel would still spill from The injectors. I think I have a dud replacement pump.
You should still get fuel just at the incorrect time. Fuel shut down solenoid could be not working. Swap it out for the one off the old pump. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Awesome info, can you tell me what happens if I took the pump out before I lined up the timing? I didn’t have info I just ripped it out. Also left the manifold on.
Hey Nelson. If you take the intake off you might be able to gain access from the side the pump was removed and turn the smaller part of the scissor gear back into position while pushing a screwdriver into the front of the gear and trying to line up all 3 parts of the gear. There will be spring resistance while trying to move the smaller part of the scissor gear back into position. Hi, ive fried my module via electrical short from a DP chip, have picked up a pump off an old engine is it worth trying to swap the modules instead of changing the pump?

The pump was replaced as it had low fuel delivery to the injectors. There can be a lot of issues with this pump. The small delivery vane pump in the back of the main pump can get stuck vanes causing low flow supply issues to the injector pump. the controller on top of the pump can be fried and cause a no start or run rough problems. well that was the TPS needed changing. But still has no power in first gear, lag or something. Am removing air filter and clean MAF. I revved the motor when undone the filter box and seemed heaps better so hopefully its better after this. Maybe an EGR clean and delete and catch can after this
@@Vool2go I would check your turbo waste gate. Sometimes the diaphragm gets a whole in it and the waste gate stays open all the time dumping potential boost out the exhaust.
No the pump was from a running engine from the wreckers. I tried looking into doing a rebuild but there is little info out there. Thanks for watching. 👌
Hey Sean, when you say EGR did you remove the intake and clean it as well? If so you may have knocked a wire off or forgot to put one back on the pump maybe. Failing that the pump may have decided to fail on you. Did you remove the injector lines? I would try and pump the primer and have someone crank the engine to see if you can get fuel up. Thanks for watching👌
Hi mate, i have just started with the injector pump change on my rodeo. Currently trying to line up timing marks but every time i get tdc and the pump marks line up but the 6mm hole on the gear is not visible so i am guessing who ever done tje timing has put the gear in the wrong position would you agree? Cheers
Keep turning the engine over . They will line up I took me around 5-8 times till all the marks lined up. You need to lock that scissor gear before pulling the pump.
What were the symptoms of this? Mine doesn't like to rev past 3k full throttle. In live data: Maf sensor reads fine Egr ok But actual fuel injection quantity is way off the desired value. I've checked the screen in the banjo fitting I'm the supply line to the pump and it was clean as :( I havent had the manifold off to see if its blocked but the car doesnt blow any smoke so im pretty confident its getting enough air. I think it may be the pump at this point :(
Hey Michael, I think you have hit the nail on the head. The rodeo that was in the video wouldn’t rev much past 3000 rpm also and would struggle to get to 100Kph. There were no engine fault codes or engine light on. These pumps can have internal issues with clearances and the little vane pump in the back of the injection pump can get issues with stuck vanes causing supply issues to the main pump. Also the ECM on top of the pump can have connectivity issues and give you grief too. Couple of things to check before pulling the parts cannon trigger are - make sure the exhaust isn’t blocked and check there isn’t any fuel suction hoses drawing air and both fuel filters are clean. Good luck 🤞
Good points. Mine's doing the same. on a flat it can get to 100 but any hills in 110 zones and it be stuck at 40km or so, pretty dangerous. Some of the spring clamps are worn and allow the hoses to come off fairly easily, I could do with replacing them with worm drive clamps. I havent checked the exhaust yet so thats a good idea. I may even try to source an injector bleed of kit to check the injectors, one of the values for one was a 0.3 but the others were all close to 0 compensation. I did a quick google for the price of a new pump, far out. hopefully trade price is a bit easier on the wallet. I don't like the idea of a used pump. There isnt any adjustment on the pump is there?
@@SuchIsLifeInTheZone as they are fly by wire I don’t think adjustments are a thing but could be wrong. Baileys Diesel service rebuild these pumps. 3.5k last I checked. As long as you have a good core to exchange. This job isn’t a bad job. The Navara 3L have the same pump and are horrible to do as they have timing chains to deal with. There is a video on TH-cam showing some trouble shooting with this pump to make sure it is the problem. I’ll try and find the link.
@@basketcasebuilds5712legend! I'd seen that but paid it off as it was coming up as a TF rodeo not RA. Page 47: p0400 exhauat gas recirculation flow code(doesn't specify if too much or little on my tool) which it sometimes gets cuts fuel injection quality. I'll add having a look at the sensor with the steps they provide to my list. Egr holds vacuum with a mighty vac and opens and closes. But it could be reading right and a symptom of a blocked exhaust. Some things to think about and check before I fire up the parts cannon and live off rice and tuna for a the rest of the year.
Hi mate! awesome vid, super helpful. I've got a similar problem on mi 2005 rodeo. Did that one have the check engine light on? my engine tunrs off at 1200rpm but its intermitent, at times it just works fine. theres no power loss(when its working) and no smoke tough. Any thoughts on anything else it could be? thanks again!!!
Hey 👋 thanks for checking out the channel. The Ute in the video was gutless and no check engine light was on. I would make sure that you have good rubber fuel lines that seal and no air can get in they hate air in the system. But sounds like you might be heading towards a pump change. They have a heap of different issues it could be electrical or internal clearance issues or even the small vane lift pump in the back of the main pump will fail also. Just done another one of these pumps in a 2004 navara with a 3.0 zd30. Same pump as the rodeo. It’s issue was the vane lift pump. Remember to lock the scissor gear and it can take several tries at lining up all the marks. ✌️
I tried doing this on my petrol rodeo but no matter how many parts I pull off I can't seem to find the pump in this video. It all looks different!! Who do I contact for compensation???!
Hey thanks for checking out the channel. Yeah my local wrecker had 3 x utes come in and he hooked me up. I had to remove it but for $100 it was worth it. You are correct was quoted $3000 for a rebuilt one and they wanted my old pump for exchange. 👍
Basket Case Builds that’s insane! How long did it take you to put the new one in? Also, how many km did you have when it started to die out? My 04 rodeo has got 407 000km on it and Im really dreading the VP44 dying out on it. Do you think having a lift pump helps?
Tilan De Costa it took about a day. I did it over a weekend (2 half days really) the Ute had 305,000 kms on the clock. You have done well with the kms on your truck. I think a electric lift pump is worth it especially as these VP 44 pumps hate fuel starvation . There is a little mechanical vane lift pump inside the VP 44 and they get damaged when fuel is held back from it. They have a fair distance to draw fuel from. 👌
Basket Case Builds wow true! How long do you think a professional mechanic would take to do it you reckon? Did you ever consider doing a mechanical pump conversion or was it too mouth work? I bought mine with 360 000km on it and it’s up to 407 000km now. I should say I have been running ONLY BP Ultimate In it and every 5000km I put in a can of Liqui Moly Diesel Clean and boost. I’m just doing that hoping for the best. I doubt that any other wrecker would sell a VP44 For just a 100 bucks, that’s insane you’re so lucky!
Tilan De Costa thanks for checking out the channel. The Ute was a friends Ute that I changed the pump on. I think the Liqui Moly is a good choice. If it were my vehicle with high kilometres I would be changing out all rubber fuel lines and checking the primer/filter housings one under the car and one in the engine bay so there would be no chance of sucking air. These fuel pumps hate fuel starvation. Yes I got lucky with the wrecker. As for a mechanic doing it I would say 4-5 hrs with correct tooling.👌
Hey man awesome video, just wondering how you confirmed the pump was the fault before you went ahead and swapped it out? I've got a 05 rodeo that won't start at all, I've confirmed that the immobilizer and all the wiring is working as it should and I know the pump has fuel in it from pumping the primer with the bleed bolt out on the side of the pump but there's no diesel at the injectors no matter what I do, also no fault codes or engine light on, engine will run on ether if keep spraying down the intake constantly. Cheers
Hey thanks for checking out the channel. I would be making sure your ecm is talking to your pump if you have no fuel at all to the injectors. You can hot wire the pump bypassing the ecm. Also make sure the shut off solenoid is working correctly. If you can get hold of a Tech2 to view some live data that will also help The Rodeo I did was still running but wouldn’t rev above 1500 rpm. Also my Navara which has the same pump would not start when I purchased it but still had some fuel getting to the injectors but not enough to make it run. New pump fixed this issue These pumps are well known to fail the module on top of the pump and the little vain lift pump that sits in the back of the main injection pump the veins get stuck causing fuel supply issues to the main pump. Did the truck suddenly stop or lost power as the days went on? Good luck 🤞
Cheers man! Yea the truck just suddenly stopped, went to go to work one morning and wouldn't start, drove sweet the night before. I originally thought it was the immobilizer but not the case. Also I have by passed the ecm by putting power and earth straight to the pump and when I do this I can hear the shut off solenoid working but still no fuel up to the injectors she's bone dry
Just a reconditioned pump alone here in Aus is around $3000 with minimum of 5 hrs to fit it also a fitting kit is around $230. This kit has all the gaskets and seals needed to do the task. I don’t know going rates for labour but you get the idea. Thanks for watching
Hi to all. I am from GREECE. February 1, 2023 isuzu dmax stopped moving forward. after finding the oil pump problem i went to a pump repair shop. the cost???? hold on...... 1500 euros!!!! doing research on the internet I found out that the whole pump costs 1450 euros new. the store I went to wanted to charge me 1,500 euros for replacing only the pump head. after hours of disagreement and negotiations and proofs, the store finally changed its mind and fixed the problem with a new brain for the price of 700 euros!!!! This was theft without precedent. wanted to charge me an additional 800 euros. this from me guys.
Yes, only if the scissor gear wasn’t lined up and locked. It took me a few goes at top dead centre before the scissor gear hole presented itself so I could put my screw driver in. As for the pump itself being out I left it as I found it from the old engine after lining up all the makes. I think there is a previous comment about removing a bolt on the pump and then being able to lock the pump at the correct position before removing it. Hope this helps.

No worries, thanks for checking out the channel. Good old engine just the fuel pump that have issues and expensive to purchase even reconditioned. 👍
scissor gear sounds like it is a torsional spring loaded anti backlash gear. Same as the cam gear on the 4jx1.
Yes same thing different name. Thanks for checking out the channel 👌
Hi , the pump has a module that s where the the plug fit in , did you swap it with the original ? , thanks
gamesninja 1215 thanks for watching. No i used the module that came with the used pump. The modules are known to go bad. 👌
@@basketcasebuilds5712 thanks mate .
@@basketcasebuilds5712 Apparently the diesel flow in the pump is used to cool a transistor in the ECU. That transistor cooks itself leading to ECU failure. The transistors are only $10 but you need to be tech genius fit them. Including labour you can get the transistor replaced for $500.
Hey mate nice work are 4jh1 control solenoids on top the pump worth trying to replace at home by a mug like me😂 cheers merry Christmas
Thanks for checking out the channel. Sorry not sure about solenoids but the ECM block on top is not really a home thing apparently. Happy New Year 🥳
wow I was suprised how you didn't even crack an angry lol
Yeah the things you do for free. Funny thing is this old thing is still running today. Thanks for checking out the channel 💯
@@basketcasebuilds5712 cheers and your's is the first "rodeo" video I've seen. Great stuff!
Mines 2006 done 165,000 and engine light is intermittent. When it's off it doesn't have much power at all. Struggles up small hills in second gear. Just bought the GDT too lol.
Anyway maybe fuel pump and injectors I was told.
Thanks for your UP!
@@Vool2go it not a bad job to do if you do change the pump. Nissan 3.0 Navara (ZD30) have the same pump and are harder than these. There is a comment from a guy saying how to lock the new pump up so it won’t move on install. Never knew this was a thing. May help I have not tried it myself. Also the engine may take a few goes at top dead centre to line up the scissor gear hole. It will eventually line up. Good luck👌
well that was the TPS needed changing.

Appreciate it Bro 😎
My isuzu dmax 2004 unjection pump is damage can u please help me where to buy im from phillipines
Hey Jeff, my local wrecking yard has not got any injector pumps at the moment. Sorry I can’t help you out. Thanks for checking out the channel. 👍
did you rebuild the pump, if so where did you get the kit from, cheers
No the pump was from a running engine from the wreckers. I tried looking into doing a rebuild but there is little info out there. Thanks for watching. 👌
How many kms does this engine have?
Pierce Dwyer at that stage it had just on 300,000 kms. Thanks for watching 👍
I have a problem I just clean may egr then won't start crank only, there's no fuel come out in fuel lines
4jh1 electronic injection pump
@@basketcasebuilds5712what happens is scissor gear isn't locked ad pump is removed
The spring loaded small section of the gear lets go and is a pain to turn back into the correct position. It can be done with lots of patience.
How come that the fuel well not out from injection pump going to injector so the Infineon can’t start
Are you having issues with no fuel at the injector pipes when they are cracked?
What were the symptoms of this?
Mine doesn't like to rev past 3k full throttle.
In live data:
Maf sensor reads fine
Egr ok
But actual fuel injection quantity is way off the desired value.
I've checked the screen in the banjo fitting I'm the supply line to the pump and it was clean as :(
I havent had the manifold off to see if its blocked but the car doesnt blow any smoke so im pretty confident its getting enough air.
I couldn’t find a link but found a manual for the pump. manualzz.com/doc/22108426/4jh1-tc-engine
You also could be looking at a faulty fuel stop solenoid.
My engine would run itself at 1200 rpm or so with no throttle control. Ended up being tps. About 250 for a genuine one
@@nickwhite6717 Thanks for checking out the channel and commenting👍
@@basketcasebuilds5712 no dramas mate! Almost got everything together to do a mechy swap on my '06

Gud pm I want to know about the problem of my car dmax 2004 model4jhi ingine
The problem is can’t start the fuel not go out from injection pump to injector tnx I need your advice.
Thanks for the video..but mate...HOW on earth did you get a VP44 For 100 bucks? I’ve heard they can cost upwards of 3 grand for just a rebuilt one!
If you can get hold of a Tech2 to view some live data that will also help
The Rodeo I did was still running but wouldn’t rev above 1500 rpm.
Also my Navara which has the same pump would not start when I purchased it but still had some fuel getting to the injectors but not enough to make it run. New pump fixed this issue
These pumps are well known to fail the module on top of the pump and the little vain lift pump that sits in the back of the main injection pump the veins get stuck causing fuel supply issues to the main pump.
How much would you expect this to cost for labour and parts from your average garage in au/nzd?

That's $1k cheaper than the quote I got in Newcastle, including $3k for the recon pump from Tamworth. Mind sharing where you got yours done? Thanks
Hi there, do you know if it’s possible to have the pump timing 360 degrees out even with the timing marks aligned again?
Yes, only if the scissor gear wasn’t lined up and locked. It took me a few goes at top dead centre before the scissor gear hole presented itself so I could put my screw driver in.
As for the pump itself being out I left it as I found it from the old engine after lining up all the makes. I think there is a previous comment about removing a bolt on the pump and then being able to lock the pump at the correct position before removing it. Hope this helps.
@@basketcasebuilds5712 thank you :) I’ve fitted a new/rebuilt pump and module but can’t get it started! My crank, cam and fuel pump marks all line back up after being rotated, but im just wondering if I could have the fuel pump 360 degrees out being as it is a mechanical set up and not common rail
@@eFaZeHD are you getting any smoke from the exhaust or smell of combustion? I had my young bloke help crank it while I primed it. I would think the rebuild place would set it up ready to bolt in once your marks are lined up. Is it pumping any fuel if you crack the injector lines?
@@basketcasebuilds5712 thank you for taking the time to reply really appreciate it :) I would of thought the rebuild company would of done that too, I’m getting the smallest amount of fuel at a injector and it’s not under any pressure, I have fuel up to the pump as used a hand primer.
