      thank you Sofia!!! Like I've been sayin in the comments, I was initially worried with how the response to this video would be, because I wasn't all like bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I mean work is still so much fun and I love my kids (cept my 5th graders rn u__u) but yeah I had to keep it real

    this was so informative, i'm glad you brought up the reality of teaching being really hard as well as being rewarding, i think that can be easy to lose sight of when applying for these kinds of programs! sending you good vibes from the uk~

    I really didn't know that you were an International Business major! I have been watching your videos for the past few months and only been looking into teaching recently. I am in my third year of my International Business Degree. I've been thinking of teaching in Korea just to get more of a feel of living in another country and well interested in teaching English. I actually lived abroad in Tokyo for like 6 months but I really want to live in Korea. I worked in the International Programs office on my campus where one of the jobs I had was helping International students not only feel more comfortable in America but answer questions about any grammar/speaking in English. It was a lot of fun and really interesting. Thank you for making this video. It really gave more of an insight into a teacher. I know you have changed your career path in Korea (honestly amazing keep going something that you love) but this is a good video to watch. I hope things are going well. :D

    I taught in Japan for several years, so I found this video very interesting. (Actually I follow you and love all your videos!!) I just wanted to say that in Japan at least, your employer can NOT take your visa away. I guess they could fire you for moonlighting if you signed an agreement to that effect in your work contract, but you'd still be allowed to remain in Japan (and search for another job) at least until your visa had expired. There are some employers that might try to threaten deportation, but if so, they're lying. In Japan, a work visa lasts 3 years. After 3 years, you would need an employer to renew the visa if you planned to stay--so just tutoring privately wouldn't really work for too long. But technically, you can stay until that first work visa has expired.

    I've always wanted to be some kind of teacher ever since I was young. And I heard about teaching abroad when I was in high school and been thinking about it since. Not a forever job but to get out there and have a different experience. I'm currently in my 3rd year of college and have switched my major like 3 times and I always come back to teaching English abroad but there isn't a specific major so I decided on a major where I can easily find a stable job when I come back from teaching abroad. But you never know, I want to try Korea but also other countries ((:

    Hiiii. I love your videos, especially the ones where you talk about your lifestyle in Korea. I am planning on taking a gap year (or two) before applying to med school and I'm interested in teaching abroad in Korea in the meantime (I am thinking pediatrics hehe). However, I'm very concerned about teaching English as an Asian American? I've seen videos about horrible experiences and being discriminated against because they don't look exactly like the stereotypical "foreign teacher"... I was just wondering what's your input on that and any advice??? ❤❤❤

    • @YOHOMEGIRL
      @YOHOMEGIRL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Emily!! Oh thanks dude! In terms of your gap year, first off- awesome that you're thinking about applying to med school! :3 But hmm, I have friend's who have taught and teach English here as Asian-american and Korean-american. From what I know of their experiences is that they've really enjoyed it! If you're talking about the actual application process, I'm sorry I can't really comment on that. I haven't heard of horror stories with the application process (in govt programs), but definitely have heard stories from hagwon applications. Because in hagwon's they are really looking for the "white (looking) foreigner)" (of course not all the time, but I've had friends who told me trying to find a hagwon job and not being white has really affected their job search) I hope that helps Emily! Also what other videos would you like to see?

    This may be a dumb question but are the teachers allowed to have piercings/tattoos? I’m studying for my bachelors to teach in Korea and I don’t have any tattoos but I plan on getting one on my neck and I’ve had my septum piercing since I was 13 (I’m now 19). In the schools I’ve attended there’d be teachers with tats/piercings so I’m just wondering if Korea’s like not okay with that

    i'm not going to lie. this video stressed me out lol because i know there's a lot of things to say about the job. working as an epik/smoe/hagwon/etc teacher isn't always breezy. it can be difficult navigating the fact that we can be the fun teacher while at the same time the most hard working teacher but also not taken seriously but also sought after to be english masters. i struggle feeling fulfilled when my role carries a multitude of meanings that i'm not 100% sure on.anyways, thanks for sharing your experience and advice. all the best!

    What's it like to have a vibrant hair color in Korea? I've seen some things about it on the internet in the past, but I figured that maybe things have changed and that employers aren't as strict anymore. How has it been for you in general and as a teacher?
    I really love your videos and editing btw :)

      @YOHOMEGIRL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmmm it's fine! My previous school in daejeon was super chill about it, my old coT was like.. why didn't you do pink? So it depends on your school. Even though my hair is pretty vibrant, it's still technically a "natural" color like..not my natural hair color, but it could be someone else's! Lol
      I had a friend where she couldn't wear her purple streaks in her hair, and other friends who had silver hair and be okay

    • @Someoneyoudontknow20
      @Someoneyoudontknow20 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting...my first thought was actually that it was a natural color, but I wanted to ask anyway, lol. Do you think attitudes are different for hagwons because they technically have to sell their services or whatever to parents?

    Can you go ahead and apply to SMOE without any experience? I am about to graduate with my teaching certification and I’ve lived in Seoul for half of my university life, I’ve also had experience teaching in Seoul so I’d like to stay in or around Seoul lol.

    • @YOHOMEGIRL
      @YOHOMEGIRL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep! Like I said in the video, you don't need any teaching experience, I didn't have any teaching experience myself ^^. If you want to get Seoul, I'd recommended sending in your application THE DAY applications open. Because everything is a first come first serve basis!

    I didn’t know you couldn’t just transfer to smoe! I’d never want to do all that paper work and interviewing again!! I have a question! What are you doing for English camp? Haha

    • @YOHOMEGIRL
      @YOHOMEGIRL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah dude- it's a little bit different, and definitely not as stressful as the first time. But yeah you do need to go through the steps again. With alot of your official documents that you needed from usa- you can just get offical copies from your MOE :) GURL I DON'T KNOWWWWWWWWW what about you?

      YO' HOMEGIRL I’m either doing Harry Potter or detective! I have my students vote and those were the 2 highest! Last year I did superhero and drama camp, so If you do Those , hit me up cause I have a really well laid out camps!

    i don't know if you answer this question ages ago but with those SMOE GEPIK and EPIK programs what TEFL certification did you do? I read in my last research on teaching in korea that these programs would need certification to even be considered. *I dont have any cerification lol*

    • @YOHOMEGIRL
      @YOHOMEGIRL  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      then homie g you gotta go get a certification! You just either need a 120hr tesol/tefl/celta certification. Where to get it, well you can do an online course. I did mine online & sorry I forget the website. Or you can do an in class course (which looks better btw) but it is more expensive. But that's up to you to do it are not. I just went with a cheap online site!
