I really enjoy your videos. Thank you! I used a D600 for years and loved it. Last year I found a gently used D850 for sale from a fellow. During the purchase, the seller offered to sell me his D3s 'in the box' with a 6K shutter count and like-new condition. I turned him down that day, but the seed had been planted. Ten days later I bought the D3s and WOW! What a fantastic camera! I use my D850 daily for work but my heart belongs to a D3s. Megapixels really are overrated.

I just got an older DSLR: a D810 with +- 18.000 clicks. Doing film photography as a hobby, I needed a digital camera because my daughter is born and I don't have that much time anymore. Even though the D810 design and technology is around 10 years old, it does everything I want, most importantly to use my AI-S and AF-D lenses and produce an image I can pull through Lightroom immediately. Beyond that it has auto ISO, auto focus (I only use center point and recompose) and ISO 64. OK, it doesn't have a tilt screen, but the D810 does accept the DR-4 right angle viewfinder that also fits my FM3A and F100. I can also use the standard MC-30 cable release. The only thing I miss is focus peaking, which is really handy with manual focus lenses (like AI-S), but the electronic rangefinder is very accurate, the downside is that I have to take my eye off the subject.
I understand newer mirrorless cameras do things quicker, maybe with a bit higher resolution, a bit more sharpness and a bit less distortion when using newer glass, and rotating/tilting screens and WiFi is handy, but those benefits maybe only make difference in very few situations, especially as hobbyist. I think the image quality of the D810 with my 85mm f/1.8 AF-D and 35 mm f/2 AF-D lenses is very very good, especially at ISO 64. Together with the 36 MP real estate it almost gives a digital medium format experience. When my daughter is a bit older, and I have bit more time, I will get back to use my manual film cameras again ;-)

    Hi Martin.
You made me laugh out loud when you mentioned the pocket wizard because it brought back memories from long ago when I was a photographers assistant.
When we went on location we'd take portable Norman flash heads with battery packs. We'd hide them all over the place for secondry lighting. We used yards and yards of sync leads with three way connectors gaffer taped together. Then, using the technique of crossing our fingers hoped the connectors didn't fail.😂
When the Norman flash heads came out with pocket wizards built into them, after I'd left the studio, I remember laughing to myself knowing the photographer wouldn't change over from what he knew worked for him.
Regardless of the camera and lenses people choose. Using what's right for your needs is what matters.
Finally, the differnt personalites of the photographers I assisted determined the kind of work they got, the type clients they worked with, and was also a major factor regarding how long they were able to stay working as photographers in the industry.
Another good video from you, Martin, based on real world experience that people can respond to. Enjoy the rest of your week.

I had a D300 for a short period of time and I noticed how similar the RAW files were in comparison to a D700. I know the D700 has its own place and is also a personal favorite of mine, but if you want to find "another special sensor" you guys should pay attention to the Nikon D4 raw files. The D4 renders beautiful tones and has its own character.

I agree with RP over 6D for architecture... I like to work with limitations, I find it helps me be creative. My main camera is 6D and its great, (its the closest to film ive shot with) but occassionally I have to reach for something else with an articulating screen. (I use a 200d for this) I own an eosR but I rarely use it. My favourite canon mirrorless camera is the m6mk2 as I can take the viewfinder off and pop it in my pocket, especially with a pancake lens on.

@@samuel_andreyev I have it on my gimbal for when I need full frame flat/log video, so it's easy enough to keep it on there, plus I don't own any eos R lenses. It is a really good camera but I like how the 6d (and even the 200d) work with the native lenses (plus I don't mind them getting bashed about, I'm a food/restaurant photographer and I'm less fussy about the cheaper cameras getting covered in gravy or whatever. Out of the 4 cameras I own it is the most feature packed user friendly camera, it does everything the others do and more but they all have ergonomic, image quality and other quirks that I like.
The 6d is my go to for stills if I don't need an articulated screen, because I like that I have to focus and recompose shots, it makes me think more about my shots.
The 200d is great if I can control the light and I need an articulated screen (and I don't mind dropping it into some soup, and is also incredibly light)
The m6mk2 is what I use for everyday, carry around/street photography/reportage/travel as it fits in my pocket.

I have two pet theories that I wanted to bounce off you, Martin. First, I think, to a large degree, that part of the Canon image magic is the lower DR. Second, I have a gut feeling that DR and green tone are directly related; the higher the DR the more greenish tint/tone to an image. I saw that first hand with the 5DIV (vs 6D or 5D3) and just about any Sony sensor compared to the same Canons.
These are just anecdotal theories, but I can't shake them!

I wanted a 6D, bought new,, and a solid good feeling camera. Yes, I would have liked a better AF system, but that center point was something else. Bought it for mainly my Landscape work, but ended up selling it as I could not read the overlay in the viewfinder, on a fairly bright day. Others expressed the same problem. In contrast, my ole’ 70D is fine. There was a bit of chatter on the internet about adjusting the viewfinder, etc etc but it’s an OVF, people! Snagged my 5D maybe a bit over a year ago for $150 it magnificent shape with no battery or charger. My serial begins with “3”, which keeps me away from the shutter that can pop off (apparently easy to super glue back) and gives me the updated display (can’t speak to how much that might matter to me).

I've never in my life used the screen for hand-held macro (macro being >= 1x). You're just too far magnified and the image will be moving all over the place in preview. It's way better against your face.
The only case when it's a maybe is tripod of a still subject with remote shutter.
When I moved from the 650D to 90D my macros got way better, but then to 6D my photos got drastically worse until I got used to macro on FF, especially with the lower res sensor. Having the high res crop sensor is generally better for the 1.6x bonus plus cropping headroom from the large files. Especially if you are trying to shoot tiny flies or little new flower buds.
All that said I never want to use another camera because the 6D is like a drug. I'm hooked.
