      Fahim Alvi I think what Apple did here was instead of charging us an extra thousand dollars for the monitor which is cheap compared to other monitors, they gave us the option to buy it without the stand. In the end, they make it cheaper for you letting you buy the monitor without the stand. They could’ve just forced you to buy it with the stand.

Not to mention, I've got a better stand, and it cost me all of $60. It is precise, good looking and articulates more by a wide margin than the Apple one, and doesn't take up any room on my work desk.

      Technically it is a 5K monitor but the screen size and ratio should be kept in mind. P.S. 1440p is not 2K even when it is 16:9. It is 1440p or QHD, 2K is actually a resolution you don't see very often and is a name hijacked by people that don't know what they are talking about after 4K monitors came out. If anything QHD is 2.5K. 4K resolution is called that because of of the horizontal resolution. 3840 or 4096 depending on the ratio. 1080p is really closest to 2k since it is 1920 wide.

    I'm so happy you did this review. I tried to find it everywhere for the UK but it's not available unless you get it on the US store.
    Speaking of the store NOTHING is listed for tech specs.
    The thing driving me to this originally was the resolution over the Samsung but it basically gets crushed or goes close to or even in other departments.
    The resolution is a nice thing but when you lose so much refresh rate, the true 10 bit colour along with Samsung's more accurate colours and not to mention it has access to freesync2 at 120 hz as well you start to think is it worth the much higher price.
    This also doesn't take into account the risk of light bleeding from the ips panel over Samsung's VA which is very close if not better for input lag contrast and viewing angles (Lol like viewing angles matter)
    All in all the LG only has the resolution going for it but it is an absolutely gorgeous design too.
    I'm going to stick with my Samsung 49" until the next generation of ports become more standard like type c thunderbolt and DP 2.
    They could also have done to not put speakers in. Anyone buying this monitor will not be using the inbuilt no matter how good they because even fairly low budget sound systems will crush the built in audio which they will likely do because if you have £1500 to burn on the monitor your definitely getting at least a £50 speaker set.
    Thanks again for the review your channel has taught me a lot.

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair, this isn't made to be high-end. It's made for people with too much money and not enough sense to buy. That's why it's specs are not as good as high-end gaming rigs or Samsung, as you noted. There is a reason nobody really uses ultrawide screens and such. Not worth it. Real office workers don't use them. Most gamers don't use them. Sim racers don't use them. Esports don't use them. Nobody uses it. In fact, most of the time, vertical is better than horizontal. Of course, for the same space and price, you could just get three widescreens, instead.

    • @JoNNyCLOUD171
      @JoNNyCLOUD171 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheClassicWorld this is LGs highest spec super ultra wide consumer monitor mate. It's made how they wanted to make it. With top end resolutions for the screen size. The technology isn't there yet for 8k 49 inch monitors with 3ms and 144hz refresh rates.
      Unless you had a custom panel and even then your looking at 5 grand and still have to sacrifice something for performance in other areas.
      Dunno were you got the idea that LG wanted to make a mass produced inferior product just to sell to ignorant people. It makes literally zero business sense.
      For it's size it's still a very reasonable product and even more so for the cost.
      49 inch with 120 Hz and reasonable colour bits and hdr is quite good. It's just not as good as Samsungs 49inch for gaming but it sure as hell is good as a multiple purpose workstation set up

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoNNyCLOUD171 I never claimed otherwise? Well, they did just that, in a sense. People with too much money buy ultrawide screens.
      In fact, that's barely true. It seems, most of the people with ultrawide screens got them given to them for free. Pointless screens, maths proves that. They are worse than normal widescreens and triple setups for gaming, for example.
      I also fail to see how a single widescreen would in any way be greater than two normal widescreens. Cost is about the same, too, if not cheaper. 16:9 also make more sense.
      Just saying, 'it's high-end, therefore, worth the 1,500' doesn't mean anything at all. It's a bad item and worse than what you could otherwise do with the same amount of money.
      Your logic is flawed. Even just as a 'workstation', having three screens would be much better and would cost less. Unless you're an artist or doing something really high-end, why would you even need a massive 5k screen for a 'workstation'? What 'work' requires 5k rez? No work at all.
      A pointless, overpriced product, by definition. You may as well tell me that a gold phone is not bad for £50,000 since it is gold, after all, and the best phone they have ever made. That doesn't make it good nor even a good deal. It just makes it overpriced and no better than what you can get for much less.
      Not to mention, I have never seen any kind of pro or top PC-user with one of these. Every artist, every coder, every pro gamer, every Esports member -- everybody. They all use a normal widescreen (or three). Nobody wastes money on ultrawide screens and gets even less screen than a 16:9 unless they want to simply claim, 'I have an ultrawide screen' like it means something. It doesn't mean anything and it has been proven, mathematically, that ultrawide screens are worse.
      You are allowed to like them and buy them all you want, but you can't claim they are good or worth it. That's untrue.

    My only problem with these really wide monitors is that the Windows docking feature isn't customizable . It would be nice to be able to have multiple zones along the edge of the screen instead of an entire edge or just a corner.
    I have a curved 39" Samsung and having the top and bottom edges broken into 1/3 or 1/5 segments would be awesome. Something like this beast would require even more (i.e. up to 1/8).

    I’m not into video editing and I’m definitely not a gamer. I almost bought the LG ultra fine 5K 27 inch but at the last moment decided to go with the 27 inch 5K iMac. Same monitor credentials, but with an aluminium finish not a plastic one and a decent computer to boot for a few hundred more than the LG, which is a class leading monitor.
    I can see the virtue of your 49 inch LG set up if you are the type of person who appreciates a dual screen display but doesn’t want that central pillar, or you’re into more professional work loads than me.
    Apple’s sidecar also allows me to utilise the 27 inch display of my iMac with my portable computing devices. I know that LG also offers that 1 cable connectivity which is why I almost went with them.
    Keep up the videos. I find them informative, well thought out and compared with many, unbiased!

    Yes it looks amazing and my wife has one for her accountancy work as she can have multiple spreadsheets and Xero all around her but as a top of the range monitor for video and photo editing it falls, sadly, very short (for me anyway) of the quality of the 5k Imac 27 inch or indeed its monitor equivalent the LG Ultrafine 5k 27 inch display.
    I wanted to love the LG 49 so much and drooled over how it looked on my wife's desk and spent some time in front of it video editing in FCP and then in LR and PS but it's just not as stunningly sharp as the 27 inch 5k mac and this is what I wanted and hoped for.
    People go on about being able to edit across the whole screen - you can but at a huge cost - as you adjust the view percentage to zoom in to fill the massive screen you see less and less of what you are working on which sort of defeats the object.
    I then took a tape measure and set the view in FCP on the Imac to "fit" and did the same exercise on the 49LG. What you see as the video edit plus logos, titles and music etc is exactly the same as the Imac and all you are getting is a huge amount of grey dead space either side with the 49LG
    To get the screen to look "right" and as good as the Imac I tried different settings such as the HDR button and when that didnt sort the quality I then went manual to adjust brightness, sharpness, contrast and nothing came close to the Imac / Ultrafine screen. Don't get me wrong it's sharp but when compared to the 5k Imac it's not in the same league.
    I then did a normal word processing / email test and when I looked critically closely at the letters I typed they looked like up to date dot matrix characters rather than being smooth and rounded as I was expecting.
    And then the sound . . .what a disappointment. I tried the manual EQ settings to get something close to the Imac sound and failed miserably. The sound is better than transistor radio tinny but not smooth, mellow and all grown up like it should be out of a monitor at this price point.
    If you are more bothered about how it looks on your desk than you are about how it operates, this looks truly AMAZING and I still salivate how it looks across the office but if you are looking for personality and brains behind the catwalk model visual appeal I'm sorry but in my opinion you just won't find it here - For me I'm upgrading to the MPB 13 inch M1 for more editing speed but marrying this with twin displays and one of them (yes you've probably guessed it) the LG Ultrafine 27 inch 5k monitor.

    After a few months on the 49, the novelty wore off. Eventually, it starts to get annoying to have to physically turn your head every time an IM comes in or an email pops up.
    It's 1st world problems, I know, but I've found that you can actually go too wide. To the point where it's not ergonomically enjoyable.
    For everyday use, I prefer the UltraSharp 38 over the 49. The 38 is still huge. It's about as big as you can get without having to physically turn your head.
    And it's a few hundred bucks cheaper.

    Im using a 34" ultrawide right now and it's perfect, I certainly wouldn't want for any wider for a single monitor.
    120Hz, Gsync, movies filling the screen with no black bars, 3440x1440 can happily run two 720 windows side by side, the resolution still pushes cards to the edge, can't imagine dicking around with 5k.

  • @CrimFerret
    @CrimFerret 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It looks like a wonderful monitor. I really hope I can manage an ultrawide of some sort with my next PC upgrade, but probably not this one given the price. Even for the gaming I do, I'd probably opt to set up a window and have things like Discord, a bowser, etc to either side. There's also the option of one central monitor and one to either side that wouldn't have to be as high res and therefor likely much cheaper. As long as the bezel split isn't in the middle of my main work area, either option would be doable.

    • @georgemichael3078

      It is actually shorthand for "5k2k"
      And it isn't always about how big it is but how small the pixels the pixels themselves are.
      So is this monitor the same picture quality as a 5K monitor and then ninja slice it in half?
      At any rate, it is impossible to make a 32:9 5k monitor since 5k is always 16:9. The standard is 16:9.

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgemichael3078 Of course, with good reason. 16:9 is correct and 'ultrawide' is pointless. This is proven. It's worse than widescreen. 16:9 is better in every single way pretty much.

    • @georgemichael3078
      @georgemichael3078 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheClassicWorld I don't understand your comment. Please clarify.
      I was saying that a 4k/5k is sharper than a HD monitor which is sharper than a VGA monitor. But some would say that if you stack four HD monitors together then you would have the same as 4k. It would be the same resolution, but not the same sharpness.
      So the question is whether this 32:9 monitor is a 5k sliced in half or is a double HD monitor. Because the original Samsung 32:9 monitor was 27 inches but HD 1080p wasn't good since 27 inch is better with 1440. And that is why this monitor is a big improvement. But for those who are upset (angry) that this isn't a true 5k monitor just don't understand you can't have a true 4k/5k monitor with the shape of this monitor.
      I remember when widescreen first came out which was different from 4:3. And then people would **stretch** the 4:3 picture and say that was a widescreen movie. And any game that stretches the screen on the sides isn't really operating in UltraWide or SuperUltraWide. And sometimes the game gets cut off on top and bottom like in PUBG. So you get less, but people go whoa!!! I am getting more. For anyone on budget, DO NOT GET THIS MONITOR. But for those with the cash and like to experiment, this would seems to be sweet.

    The marketing on 5k res isn't duping you on this monitor. It's the whole display industry duping you on what resolution means for everything else that isn't a monitor. I just picked up this monitor a month ago and still love it. Productivity is way up as I can fit at least 7 useful screens on one monitor and keep my laptop closed and out of the way. But if you want a 32:9 monitor to display like 4k curved screen 50" tv you'll have to wait for it to be made and likely pay more than Apple's new gimmick display. At least this one comes with a free stand that looks a heck of a lot better.

I have a newer PC with a 2080 graphics card and an i5 overclocked (4.8 GHz) cpu and am wondering if it’s enough. 60 hz shouldn’t be a problem but I don’t know about pushing that many pixels and still get 30-40 FPS. Second, this is a follow-up video. Anyone who hears "49 inch" monitor knows this is 32:9 aspect ratio. That means it can't never be 4k or 5k since those are 16:9. @Goku Godly great point.
      Crazy thing these labels are. 4k, 5k, HD, Full HD, VGA, SVGA.
      I hooked up a Mac Mini to a 27 inch 4k monitor and the first thing it did was give me 6800x 3825. And I was like whoa! But I think it was in 30Hz so headache prone. But that is amazing that I got a 6k resolution on a "4k monitor".
      This monitor is definitely not for the people on a budget. But Samsung's original 49 inch monitor was basically like two 27" Full HD monitors merged together. Full HD works best for 21.5 inch and 1440 works better for 27 inch. So it is a hooray for those who wanted or waited from the original. But this is TH-cam so it is fun to throw your pitchfork... Such as "Graphic Card" translates to "graficka karta" (which we use as a term for GPU) and "karta" is a "she" and so is the slang term "grafarna".

    I tried different sizes of monitors and for a desk use I came to the conclusion that the old school 24 inches is the best for me. Bigger than that is a bit invasive and eyes loose the whole control of the vision.

      Once you've plugged something in in the UK, you don't want to unplug it again - that's why they're all switched sockets.

    I was actually looking to see someone tried gaming on this monitor so I can get an idea how it would look if I played Apex on it for leasure since I'm a coder. I felt so happy to see that you were playing apex at the very start of the video lol, thanks man.

    Ok yea it's wide but it's narrow. Just stack 2 of them! That looks good and a nice stand. Imagine pinning out all the connectors to one "power" USB C so the board knows what to do with it and making like 20 12v connectors and daisy chaining multiple of these together with one power port and then doing that with data so then it's one data port running like 6 of these.

    You are completely right about small height. It is not usable at all. Why they do it in this narrow way I have no idea but its annoying.
