You have the best repair videos it’s real life scenarios, man this is so cool
Many of the other videos do say that it’s a 21 and a 24 Ford’s big on that. I’ve just noticed that there’s a lot of combination situations doing the suspension.

I just bought a 2004 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L. This job looks fun. I like getting deep into things like this my wife and kids love it to because when I get frustrated I say the most hilarious stuff apparently. But the fact you did it without super useful tools and the basics really eased my mind about it. Thanks for Info and video!!

Went in for an alignment with my 2005 F-150 5.4L 3v and noticed my rack had a leak. Nothing major as I’ve never noticed the fluid loss... my guess is an O-ring failure. But I could be wrong. I do have too much play in my steering wheel, so I’m going to just replace the rack and pinion. Already replaced the power steering pump... that was fun. Truck has 139k miles, so it’s time for a replacement anyways. Thanks for the video

I have the same exact truck except it’s a 2008. I run a plow on mine also. I just did this exact same repair today. 18mm Crow foot definitely a must to install high pressure line. When removing it from pump just take off oil filter and cut the line with a die grinder cut off wheel and zip off with 18mm deep well socket.
Love your stuff. Super helpful content. Time to do the string alignment tomorrow till I can get it to my buddy’s shop to do a full blown alignment.

Back in the old days we didn't have rack and pinion. It was a whole different system called recirculating ball steering. Recirculating ball steering goes back before power steering. This is why old cars, trucks, buses, commercial trucks, and tractors had such a large steering wheel.

I am doing one today because the return line ruptured and is absolutely seized in the rack. I told him since I have to remove the rack to attempt to get out the stuck line, It doesn't make sense to put back a 15 year old rack. i also bought a new one from Detroit axle. I have used a few of them with no returns. The pressure hose was previously replaced so it was in good shape and so is the cooler. I have seen those rust out as well.

So is the only reason you don’t like Detroit axle is because of the fact that they covered their stuff and oil so it does not corrode while it’s sitting on shelves?
Other than that, how is it performing? I too am going to have to do this on my own truck here pretty soon.

One rack comes with a seal kit and one comes without? Seems like the seals would be included. This is for an 04 F150 FX4 4wd. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
The whole reason I'm replacing this damn thing is that the pressure line was difficult to get to from the pump---as you may know. So I had to remove the other end of it, on the rack. And it was rusted all to hell just like yours. It's seized in there, the pipe/line is broke off and it's just the fitting. Just enough to barely get a vise grip on but it keeps slipping off. I made some progress with a pry bar, but obvously all I'm doing is knocking it side to side and probably damaging the inside where the o ring pops in. So fuck it, new rack.

The return line is captured by a clamp plate that is part of the pressure hose and is bolted to the gear. The return line has an o-ring in a groove that seals in the bore in the gear housing. It may rotate once the clamp plate bolt is tight, but it should seal.

It’s annoying trying to find a video and the guy just talks and talks and talks and shit, just show me the part where you take it off and put it on.

It's annoying to read comments from ignorant people who just want to complain about receiving free advise. Be grateful that this video exists.

I wasn’t really trying to be insulting, I was frustrated at the time and looking for a simple straight forward video on the subject. It wasn’t just yours, it was every single video. To a degree it feels like it’s more about the person performing in the video vs attention to the specific job.
It’s a whole lot of information and advise that I wasn’t looking for. I just wanted to see someone take off and reinstall a new steering rack.
So sorry if you feel insulted to the point you need to suggest that I’m ignorant.
I’m not grateful the video exist, it was too bloated and not interesting.
I get it tho, I like hearing myself talk as much as the next old soul. Even if it is just mostly pointless points the take up space and make my comment seem longer.

“insults are the lowest form of expressing a disagreement. They do not contain rationality or argument, but rather slam the door on understanding and end any possibility of dialogue. Insulting is both the expression of an inability to maintain self-control and the absence of valid reasons with which to dismantle the other’s speech”

Didn't or shouldn't have to cut that line, it should pull out once the bracket is off the other line. He replaced his, so it didn't really matter. Other than that 👍🏾

Edit: FYI to all doing this replacement of the rack and pinion....the 10mm bolt on the universal joint is a bitch to get too. He doesn't show how difficult it actually is but it's a pain in the ass.
Edit: At the front of your truck under the grill in the opening between your fog lights on the driver side you'll see a small 1" hole. Turn your steering wheel until you can see the bolt way in there. You'll need about 3 and a half feet of extensions with your 10mm socket. Easiest way to get the universal joint freed up.
