Paper mache clay, was a complete game changer! It allowed me to be way more creative with my Halloween creations and allowed me a way to sculpt without spending a ton of money on supplies.
    Paper clay ingredients
    1 - 2 rolls toilet paper
    2 - Hot Water
    3 - 2 cups joint compound
4 - 1.5 cups glue (Tightbond II wood glue)
    5 - 1 Cup flour
6 - table spoon or so of salt.
We start off by unrolling the toilet paper into a big bowl. Then completely cover the toilet paper with hot water and let stand for at least 30min. After toilet paper has had time to soak, using a hand mixer shred the toilet paper into tiny little pieces. Then strain and squeeze at least 80% of the water out of the toilet paper. Put toilet paper balls into bowl and break apart (the smaller the better). next had 2 cups joint compound, 1.5 cups tightbood II wood glue, 1 cup of flour, and about a table spoon of salt. Using your hand mixer, mix ingredients until smooth and uniform. You should be able to ball the clay up into one big ball. Keep ball of paper clay in a ziplock bag unit ready to use. If clay is kept in something air tight like a ziplock back it should last up to three weeks without going bad.

Awesome tutorial...and I am so happy that you gave credit to the Ultimate Paper Mâché lady. She’s awesome too and a lot of people don’t give her any credit as if they came out with her recipe on their own. I appreciate your tutorials and your clear and easy to follow teaching style. I respect you and I admire your work.

Thank you so much for talking us through what you're doing and explaining every step no matter how simple it is. Too many TH-camrs film and toss music onto their videos, then speed it all up, without ever speaking. This can make it difficult to understand what is being done and doesn't give any little hints or tips. So thanks for making this really clear and easy to understand and follow.

I just made a batch, and am so impressed already. The body of the clay seems wonderful. I'm pretty sure this is a great proportion. And no oil? I have tried many different similar paper clay recipes in the past 40 years. (Yes. Remember library books with instructions?) {smiley}. I can't wait to see how this batch sculpts. With a flour composite, I am letting it rest to absorb the gluten. btw. The tool you are using is a mixer. A blender will make your smoothie, or margarita...the upright hopper with blades at the bottom. Thanks for the great vid!

Some recommendations - cut the toilet paper roll in half - save time - use a cheap blender rather than mixer - you can mix it wet and dry safely and easily - use a cloth to contain and drain the paper pulp

Hey if you use water base acrylic paint ( any color house paint works well ) instead of the glue...
1st, you don't need to add salt or flour
2nd if keeper in a air tight container or zip lock baggy it will last a very long time, I have some I made over 1 year ago and it's still good.
3rd, it won't mold either at all.
( see the flour is what molds )
4th, you can use any color paint
    And it holds it's color
Just thought it would help you

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I use wood glue in this because my projects go outside and the wood glue helps with weather protection. I’ve made it with and without flour for the most part left in a ziplock bag it doesn’t mold either way. I have tended it with acrylic paint before but found for most my projects that is just a waste of paint. I have used latex paint in the past and that causes the clay to be rubbery. I totally appreciate the help. I should probably update this video at some point in time.

Just a suggestion, since you add water to the final paste... maybe not squeezing the TP so hard, leaving it moist, would lessen the amount of time needed to break it up afterwards. Then you wouldn't need as much water at the end either... Just a suggestion. Great video, really cool projects too. You got skills. If too thin, you could add some more flour or powdered joint compound to thicken it up.

l use Walmart cheapest brand Price First toilet paper. 5 cups flour. 3/4 cup homemade liquid cornstarch, 3/4 cup white glue, 1/4 cup febreze and 4 cups water. Once you have mixed these ingredients you can add 3/4 cup drywall compound. Add 9 rolls kleenex that has been soaked in cold or warm water, your choice. l break up the kleenex by stirring with my hands. This type breaks apart nicely without much work but stirring helps avoid clumping. This recipe is approximate for me, consistency depends on how well you sqeeze out the water from the kleenex before you add it to mixture. l use my drill and a mixing wand l buy at Home depot to mix it up.

Hello. I've noticed that you haven't posted in a few months but hoping you can answer this...
Would using one of those hand blenders help the toilet paper shredding along a bit or would that be overkill ?
I'm finally going to try this. Thanks for the tutorial. :)

If you use this recipe for the clay, just use the back of a nice smooth rounded spoon handle dipped in a little water. You will be able to get a nice smooth finish with it. As far as paints go, just about any will work.. I usually us acrylics on my projects

Love the finished product, how much does this make, how thick do I use? 1/4'', 1/2''?
BTW- That's called a hand mixer not blender, I almost turned you off cause I'm not putting joint compound in my blender.Lol

never really measured out how much it makes. you can build it up a 1/2 thick or more.. I have done so many times

Hi Unhinged.. thanks for the info video....my clay is kinda sticky tacky!! is this how its supposed to be?

It will be at times, you can either use some more tp to dry it out a bit or some flour. Normally I’ll keep a bowl of water on hand and keep my hands a bit wet and just work with it

I enjoyed the video and I am going to be making a batch soon, but I have a few questions about this clay...
    1. How durable is this clay once it has hardened? Can it be applied thick (1/2" or more) without it cracking/breaking/crumbling?
    2. Once dried, can it withstand extreme temperatures (freezing below 0 temps, or high temps of 110 degrees) without negative effects?
I want to use this clay as a cheap homemade filler to fill large gaps between materials such as wood, fiberglass, etc. I need a durable clay for that. Do you think this would make for a good filler compound?

onefootinthegrave2 I don't believe that this would work well as a filler like you are needing.

+onefootinthegrave2 This clay dries very very hard.. Yes it can be applied very thick! I do it all the time. At times it cracks on me a little but its nothing that comes close to ruining the project. you can just go back over any small cracks and fill them with fresh clay.. I have a tutorial on what I call my 2nd generation pumpkins where I show how thick you can apply clay at www.unhingedprops.com a VIP membership gets you access to the tutorials

How about replacing salt with vinegar to prevent molds? I have been making cold porcelain clay and used vinegar to preserve it. Thank you

I did your recipe but added vinegar instead of salt and it turned out ok. Thank you for your recipe

If you wanted to dry the paper clay by way of using the oven, what temperature and how long would you bake the paper clay. Thanks.

What brand premixed joint compound do you recommend?

  • @lostcause3720

    *A HUGE QUESTION*
So When I made this Clay I used a Bowl and a Blender that we also use to make food. *Could the chemicals in the Joint Compound stay on these Trays and make the food toxic?* It may sound silly, but I just want to make sure...

I wouldn’t think so, but I’m not an expert on things like that.. best bet is to have utensils that you only use for mache

The experts say to use your craft items only for craft, and not food, as well. If it was a coated ceramic bowl, and stainless beaters? I don't see contamination happening if washed well. I WOULD NOT suggest the same with plastics, or porous surfaces that might not wash off, (nor the "fume films" from cooking plastics in an oven (like shrinky dinks and other crafty kitchen shares) that might not completely wash off.) This is my opinion. Use your judgement.

I really hope you reply to this! I followed the recipe but in the end my clay was like lumpy and when I tried to mold bits were flaking off and not staying together when you smooth it all out if that makes sense. Did I not blend the toilet paper enough? Please help I want to try again!

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It sounds like there is a little too much toilet paper in the batch.. This can be a little tricky at first especially with TP being made so many different ways now.. also you may spend some time needing the clay it may help as well

I did a really long time ago. This is my favorite, then after that would be the wood clay and the next one after that would be the eggcarton clay
