I’ve used phone book pages, newspaper, blue shop towels and Brown Kraft paper in paper mache projects, sometimes I’ve done layers of different materials on the same project. I definitely like using the kraft paper as a skin because it’s easiest to paint over without showing the newsprint. These are all great supplies, thanks. Never used cotton balls, cloth or toilet paper but I’d love to try them! I love all the props you make! As an artist who has taken fine art classes from elementary through college, hearing you say you’ve never had an art class proves that some folks just have natural talent! No doubt about it!
Thanks for the suggestions regarding shop towels and fabric which I have plenty of. Just recently started doing paper mache again for a project. I had tried it before six years ago but gave up due to frustrating results. But watching your videos and reading Jonni Good's paper mache site has inspired me to try it again.
Made some zombie torsos for target shooting using the shop towels after watching your video. I used a cpr manikin covered with cling wrap and made a back plate using cardboard. Repaired it with the same shop towels and expect to get several uses out of it. Thanks for the info.
I'm new to paper mache as well as cloth mache now. Great info on tearing newsprint on its bias. Also on how different materials react to paste and differ in drying times. VERY useful information. My current project is casting paper/cloth mache over a large latex balloon. I would like to use a heavier paper or (after watching your video) cloth over the balloon. However the drytime of these heavier and stronger materials allows the balloon to deflate slightly in the hour(s) it takes to set. I should arrange to have a pump at the ready to reinflate every 15 minutes or so (not the easiest thing with available resources). Have you used some sort of armature for your paper sculptures? I have some heavy aluminum wire which might hold a shape long enough for a cloth /paper mache to cure. Do I then cover it with thinner layers of paper mache? Any thoughts on the project? All responses welcome.
I’ve used several different things for armatures.. However in your current situation, you could do a few layers of paper strip mache over the balloons, let that dry it then do the cloth over that. I think that would probably be your best bet
but late of a response but the best thing to add is joint compound (any brand but DAP), wet plaster can give you hives if you have exposed to your skin for too long and is more brittle/sets too fast

If you use paper towels, does it take longer to dry?
It can depending on how much paste they soake up
