    This episode is a big one, and there are multiple reasons why it’s special. First, it’s a pre-pandemic flight from Phoenix to Honolulu, so that alone will make it a great escape from today’s world. But it’s also special because this flight was operated by an American Airlines Airbus A330-323, which because of the pandemic, has since been completely retired. None of us will ever fly on one of these in American colors again. American has said it’s possible the A330-200’s come back, but the A330-300 is done, parked, retired, ended its service life, however you want to put it. So, although I had no intent for this to be my last ever American A330-300 flight, it became exactly that. This flight is also just beautiful from start to finish, so that makes it even better. This video has basically become a tribute to this aircraft. Enjoy, for the final time, the American Airlines Airbus A330-323.

      Hi, do you know why American Airlines would "retire" an airline model just because of the pandemic? That sounds interesting. Would love to get your insight because I'm an AAdvantage member and wish to fly to Hawaii next year if COVID clears. Thank you.

      Kila Adams there is a main reason why they are simply just done with the a330-300 it’s because they are too costly to fly which is very unfortunate to hear they have been retired which is a complete different reason why all the other airlines are retiring older aircraft but rumor has it they aren’t getting rid of the A330-200 they are just in “long term storage” but this is just horrible for what this industry has gone through and they also have to cut costs which is why you might have heard hundreds of 737 max orders have been cancelled which is extremely unfortunate because that aircraft was suppose to be the safest aircraft after all the repairs were done with 😢

    I think A330 planes have the best seatings. Double seats on each side for the couples and 4 in the middes for families and group. It's very quiet planes too.

      I love the 2-4-2 config on the A330 too, although the 2-5-2 config used on DC-10s, 777s, TriStars, and more aircraft back in the day is better imo, because it accounts for parties of odd numbers. Too bad it is not really used anymore.

    Honestly I was shocked when I heard that AA just dropped the A330-300 completely. The A333 is an efficient aircraft, I did not expect them to just trash all of the -300's like that. Could've sworn they had at least 5 years left. And then if that wasn't enough, soon after Delta just retired all of their 777-200ER's and -200LR's. The Delta B77L wasn't even that old, with an average age of 10 years. Truly depressing. Thanks a lot China for screwing the industry over. I can't thank you enough for filming my favorite Airbus airliner on an awesome route in very high quality. Keep up the good work. A beautiful and sad video at the same time.

      @@sla31 No problem! Your videos give me the feeling I'm also on board the flight. Top notch immersion. I also forgot to add that American got rid of the whole 757-200 and 767-300ER fleets too. I thought those types would have some more time and was hoping to personally get on a few. Very unfortunate. At least we can still fly the 757/767 with United and Delta for a few more years.

      The 747-800 max or what ever it was never really took off in sales, and Airbus has ended its A380 programme as well, as airlines prefer more economical smaller aircraft that can fly almost into any airport, that is why the A350 and B787 are quite popular for long haul routes.
      Although there are still B747 and A380 still flying, once they retire, I wonder if Airports would be annoyed with all that money into widening taxi ways, ramp space and extra higher airbridges for the A380. Didn't really last as long as the B747, but I suppose economy and fuel prices, they don't feel the need for bigger aircraft

I've had my fair share of bad flights, but I've had many more good and even great flights, but I'm always nervous before takeoff and during turbulence. Still, it's so much safer these days than it was back when I was younger. When I heard the pilot speaking about the possibility of severe turbulence, I was so glad he did mention that. After American Airlines's huge mistake in December of 2014 when they flew over Japan air space after they were specifically told not to by the Japanese Weather Bureau, I vowed I'd never fly with them again. After hearing this video, I might reconsider that decision, but I'd have to pray about it.

    What was the turbulence like if at all, any? What were the restrictions once you got there? Thanks for the wonderful vid

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were no restrictions when I got there. This was filmed just prior to the pandemic really blowing up in the United States. As for turbulence. It really depends. I have flown to Hawaii many times now. Sometimes it is the smoothest flight you’ve ever been on. And sometimes it’s bumpy from start to finish. It really depends on the weather patterns over the Pacific. And I don’t know those well enough to tell you what really makes it bumpy and what makes it smooth. My experience has been that it tends to be more bumpy during the fall and winter months. And it tends to be more smoother in the spring and summer. But, the very first flight I ever took to Hawaii was on a Hawaiian 767 from Las Vegas to Honolulu. That was in March, and it was the bumpiest flight I have ever been on. We had light to moderate turbulence the entire seven hours. So, where my experience has been that spring and summer is typically better, there’s obviously outliers.

It comes right after you hear someone exhale. LOL. I'm guessing it was a small plane? This is what I love about these flight videos is there's always something.
    I also want to compliment you on another great video! Quite a bit of takeoff turbulence it seemed and even climbing her up to cruise altitude. How soon do they put it on autopilot after takeoff? I don't suppose autopilot is used for climbing or is it with all today's technology?
    One more question: what part of the Calif coastline is that when emerging above the Pacific?
    👍😎👌

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good eye my friend. Looks like a Southwest Airlines 737-700 passing by. So, it was definitely smaller than us in an A330-300. As for the autopilot question, I'm not sure. I bet it depends on the flight conditions somewhat. But, I'm not a trained commercial pilot, so I honesty don't know that one. And then I'm also not going to be much help on the coastline question. I honestly don't remember where we crossed over into the Pacific at, and I don't have the flight track for this flight anymore.

    This was a good plane to fly on. I wish I could fly on this plane. The sound is very stunning & I keep watching this video over & over again, because of the sound of the airplane. Maybe AA might bring it back some day. They have retired lots of aircrafts during the pandemic as it caused them to lose lots of money & that took a big toll on the airline itself. & that’s the reason why they retired the A330s & other aircrafts, because they can’t afford fly them.
    AA should stop making new planes & stick to flying the ones they already have because making new ones aren’t really gonna make a difference, (this goes for every other airline as well). They are the biggest airline in the world, but making new planes isn’t gonna make anyone travel. How many of the A330-323s did they have before they retired?

    • @sla31

      This was the only time I ever flew American's A330-300 before they were retired. In fact, it wasn't long after this flight when they were retired due to Covid. I've only ever flown on one other A330-300 and it was a Delta A330. All the other A330's I've flown have been the 200 variant.

    If one is looking to fly an A330 in the US,I believe Hawaiian still does between HNL and various mainland cities--wondering if the airspace between the west coast and HNL remains US airspace or does it become international airspace somewhere in between? If one wanted to make this run in today's climate,what a/c does AA use? What kind of inflight service did you receive? What was your itinerary between JLN and HNL?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Hawaiian and Delta are both still operating the A330. As for the airspace, I believe it's only US airspace for 12 nautical miles off any coast. It then becomes international airspace. So, for the majority of a flight to Hawaii, I believe you are in international airspace. As of right now, American isn't offering their PHX-Hawaii flights, but that was supposed to restart on July 7th. Right now, they are showing that flight being operated by an Airbus A321-200NX. Which is more than capable of the flight. Once things get back to normal, and demand goes back up, I'd imagine that will be changed to a 777-200 or even a 787. American has already started using the 787 for some Hawaii flights, so they've shown they aren't afraid to put the new metal on those routes. There was no special inflight service on this flight. It as the regular drink/snack service. American only serves meals on their Hawaii flights that leave from ORD and DFW. On this particular trip I flew out of Tulsa, so I flew TUL-LAS-PHX-HNL-LAX-MSP-TUL. The problem is that I often fly much more complicated routings so I can get footage. If were talking JLN and I simply wanted to get to HNL as quickly as possible, I'd just fly JLN-DFW-HNL.

      turbofanlover Nope, I hold the camera by hand. Even on long flights. I have yet to find a mount that does not transfer vibrations from the engines through the fuselage, which the mount is attached to, into the camera. Being a perfectionist that’s no good for me. It gives the footage a rippling effect. Like when you throw a rock into a pond. That’s one of the reasons why my footage is so smooth. I basically use my arm and all of the fat and muscle to absorb all of the bumps and vibrations.

    Airbus and Boeing have different ideas about wing design. I think Boeing uses a much higher wing loading, so that the airplane is more stable in rough winds. If you compare crosswind landings of two comparable jets, say a 777 and an A330, you will see that the Boeing is much more stable on approach. The Airbus will be seen pitching up and down and it will have a tendency to float on landing.

I think they may have also added meals fo the Chicago flight, when they added Honolulu service back to Chicago. But the flights from Phoenix and Los Angeles never had meal service.
