    Hey Clifton,
I listen to your videos on my way to work every morning. I love it, but it eats up the data. Have you ever considered uploading just the audio of some of these songs, with an Old Leatherstocking logo in the background or something. (Love the t shirts btw) Either way, thank you so much for what you do. Your tutorials have helped take my banjo picking where I want it to be.

All summer I smoked meat for my family listening to this shit. Damn it was a good summer. The nosy ass neighbor (while never complaining of the mean gifted) always made note, "he's at it again, I hear Clifton Hicks out back" LOL.

I truly enjoyed this. I'm in East Tennessee and my Papaw used to sing this to me. It's funny, through our mountains the words change a little bit.

Fantastic. I've listened to this several times. The first time I heard it 6 months ago, it inspired me to buy a banjo and learn the clawhammer technique. Happy to be able to play a few songs now after not really doing anything instrumentality for the first 55 years of my life. Thank you for the inspiration!

My grandpa was born in 1895.He used to sing this ancient ballad and he also played it on the banjo(clawhammer style) and guitar as well.He also would sing and play old songs like,"BATCHELOR'S HALL","BONAPARTE'S RETREAT",LITTLE BIRDIE",AND"NEW RIVER(W.VIRGINIA)TRAIN"...(BUT HE WAS FROM JACKSON COUNTY,KY) WHEN HE WAS A LITTLE FELLOW,HIS MOTHER'S THREE OLDER UNION CIVIL WAR VETERAN BROTHERS LIVED NEARBY....if you haven't heard "BATCHELOR'S HALL" TH-cam has it by an English folk band who specialize in ancient and old ballads named,"STEELEYE SPAN"(named after a type of bridge built in England in the 1800s) BATCHELOR'S HALL (the song) is on their excellent album,"ALL AROUND MY HAT"....(also check out a devilishly humorous old church like, pilgrim hymn type of song on the album called "CADGWITH ANTHEM"It is supposed to be as though the villagers of CADGWITH have gathered in a church or some public place singing this pious sounding hymn, but by listening to the lyrics, you learn that everyone in the village are robbers and highwaymen AND THEY'VE WRITTEN A SONG BOASTING ABOUT THEIR ROBBERIES !!! Also on the album is a short simple fiddle tune called "SUM WAVES"It's the only fiddle tune I ever bothered to learn to play.It almost sounds like a bagpipe tune...

I think bluegrass is okay. It's just okay. Too many people just think that was what people were listening to in the 19th century. No, bluegrass is modern music. And it just tries too hard to be up tempo and cool. I like the old timey style a lot better.

Wonderful haunting melody plus great singing too. Trying to catch the key. I see you are in another place when you play. God bless you are keeping alive this great tradition. No banjo here but autoharp ukelele fiddle autoharp and banjolin ( violin neck and strings on banjo body). Oh and tin whistles. A pipe organ but only one pipe at a time😉. Prefer clawhammar style to new mile a minute bluegrass. Reminds me of Jean Ritchey (rip)

I knew a girl once, another folk singer like me, and we were having a “who’s the most folkie” contest. After a few opening salvos I said, “I’m so folkie, I know the fourth verse of Four Nights Drunk.” She replied, “Oh yeah? I know a one verse version of Barbra Allen.” And she did. It had everything, even the roses twined in a true lover’s knot. I had to take off my hat.
But unfortunately I didn’t learn it off her. Can someone point me to it?
