A fine job ! And fine poetic license too. The way that song came about.....We had started this "band" ,but had no songs . We had a photo shoot and I started to play Jesse James .....so we ran with it, the Bushwhacker theme On the way to our 1st gig in Tejas, Jimbo had a book about Jesse's immediate postwar "career" . The book contained one of the dead Anderson photos...you know, the kind of thing you can't look away from . I had been drinkin in some Dock Boggs as well. By the time we got to Dallas, I had that song together for the gig . Little known trivia, when we recorded it , Jimbo played percussion on the jawbone of an ass ....to my knowledge ,this is the only known recording of such . Cheers AYH
As an alcoholic that doesnt sleep much and works a lonely job digging holes in the country side (sussex downs east sussex uk) your music is literally like a new drug lol insane... Youre a beast wtf thankyou mate.

Yep I've been a metal head for 40 of my 46 years and pretty much all I listen to now is old time banjo music and old school Swedish death metal. Got into clifton about 10 years ago right after I heard clarence Ashley's the cuckoo and decided I had to get a banjo. Found clif shortly after that
As hip hop head official, from kmd to m.f.DOOM and everything between it's interesting to think of what mix of ppl that show would be! Cheers All! Clifton!

You truly capture the true spirit of these early tunes Clifton, as they were intended to be. This in itself is precious indeed. You do them so well and as I’ve heard some of these song years ago in the hills of Kentucky. Kind Thanks and many Blessings! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Sounds like a bit of a modification of bright sunny south. Really cool. Cool to hear a song about Bill Anderson, Quantrill's raiders are one of my favourite parts of American history.
This is the next instrument I need learn to play. I ask a lot of banjo players in Pennsylvania if they know who Dock Boggs is. They don't know and have no clue. So them boys don't get the honor to play with Driftin River. 3 songs I learned to play on guitar. False hearted lovers Blues, Drunkards lonley child, and oh death. You always come out of no where Cliff slap me straight in the head with all this great music. To all the Legends and the Ghost Riders in the Sky. 🤘
Great pickin as always. It may not be a pleasant song but it's good you're keeping it alive. I really like those chairs, they're works of art. They have a beautiful finish and those hand woven seats are wonderful.
I think your version is much better than the South Memphis String Band. Where you place the emphasis within the rhythm gives the tune a bit of underlying menace. I reckon the thought of Bloody Bill coming to town would similarly have carried with it a sense of foreboding for the citizenry! Great song! Great delivery!
Love this song and really enjoy your style !! Simple and relaxing I have got to study the two finger picking . I tried learning the banjo when I was young had a few songs down and just let it go , why I don’t know !!
I have to say , I absolutely love your life! No homo. What im saying is please don't stop sharing with the world. You are awesome! You should do a jam with Hank III
@@sartainja , Bloody Bill was a hillbilly who came out of the woods with blood in his eyes, blood in his eyes to distribute retribution against any and every Yankee he could put in his sights. A lot of people forget that while the Union was waging their moral war to end slavery, they sacked a lot of farms and murdered a lot of innocent non-slave owning civilians of the Southern states in the process. West of the Mississippi in Missouri, guerrilla soldiers like Bloody Bill Anderson and William Quantrill put the fear of God, and put the hurt on the Union big time. Setting things right. Only one Southern General refused to surrender, and never did. He is a hero in Southern Missouri along with Anderson and Quantrill. Jesse James too.
Love what you do Clifton, I’ve been a string instrument player since the age of five, interested in developing my own clawhammer style guitar. Signed up for Patreon with you. Do you accept and respond to emails? What is the best way to communicate with you?

Cole Younger wrote an autobiography and made a point about the savagery of war. He says "Gray heads suffered because younger ones had not been noosed..." ...not quite a defense of Bloody Bill, but I do think he gets more than he deserves from the historians.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Clifton! You're a hero man, I love your music! I've never read a biography of Bloody Bill, but authors tend to mention his escapades as a prelude to the James gang. Agreed. His style is heavy and steady. It bleeds all over every one of his songs. His style is definitely music to these busted eardrums.
Woah. This is bad ass finding out the lore behind an amazing song like this. Well done, sir.

Clifton plays the traditional folk equivalent of Doom Metal, and as an old Metalhead I LOVE this stuff.
As a doom fan, I've really fallen for this stuff (check out a Irish band called lankum for some traditional drone age)
I think all metal old heads will end up here. Good call
