@@huliniswhoiamI have watched a lot of his videos, can't say I've detected any racism. In fact, he has not only recognised the origins of the instrument, but has feted the black contributors. It's a loaded word, and thrown around casually. I cannot accept it from what I've seen.

@@digitaldemocracyai-rob The interaction didn't happen to me personally but talk to Rachel Dunway. She's a young banjo player

@@huliniswhoiam I don't know Mr. Hicks. But he has promoted black artists such as Dink Roberts on his channel, and placed black artists at the forefront of banjo evolution. He is friends with Blind Boy Paxton which speaks volumes. A single incident that you heard second hand has permitted you to label the man, a racist? Are you out of your mind? Not only that, you decide to tarnish him on a public platform and mention the girl's name to boot? What's wrong with you?

    • @Bokescreek

Yes indeed, but not the younger crowd only: I'm an old guy who's been playing for 50 years, and Clifton has done a lot for me, too! He's not only a fine picker and singer, but a great alternative voice to the politico and the fiddle-tune-only crowds that sometimes make the rest of us feel out of place in oldtime circles.

Clifton your passion has rubbed off on me. I'm just learning to play banjo at the age 61. I've built 2 mountain banjos and I'm currently working on my first hexagon banjo. I've watched your video several times along the way. To keep the built going in the right direction. Your knowledge of banjo history it amazing. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work.

Just came across this now. It gives an inside look at his life. A unique perspective not seen before. Thanks for putting it out here.
Clifton has been an enormous influence on my banjo playing. I even searched out an 1888 Luscomb because he has one and I like the sound.

I think i found clifton through a youtube search for a classical song called “come sweet death” and i found “o, death”
I love his stuff. Loved this even more. I hope to carry on the history of stringed instruments in appalachia myself.

I don't know what it is, but I love that archaic banjo sound too. Its like something that goes way back into the depths of time. I wonder when Clifton lived in Savannah. I lived there for a number of years but it sounds like he lived there after I had left.

That's so true - The poetry is more important than the music. Some might play the banjo or guitar very simple ore reduced, but the people listen first to the lyrics.
