You are such a good teacher! Wish someone had told me about UP and DOWN before I made the mistake that taught me about it! Thank you so much for these videos. Enjoy them so much.
Thank you for your wonderful guidance and encouragement. I'm sure there are stitchers who want to try these patterns but are intimidated by the cost and/or the complexity. Really really appreciate any cost-saving tips and tricks you offer. Please keep them coming. There are many of us here who appreciate your guidance
Update on my Chatelaine. Yesterday I worked on my piece on 28 count evenweave for 3 hours. It was so much fun. I did the whole center part minus the kreinik and beads. And started one corner flower. So quick and easy and addictive. I am excited to keep working on it today. Thanks for your tips.
Thanks Maureen! I know not everyone will want to stitch a Chatelaine, but it's always good to know the variety of designs, fabrics and fibres that are out there! I am so grateful for the internet - if I had to rely on UK cross stitch mags for inspiration I would have given up stitching years ago :). Thanks for watching, I always appreciate your comments!
Your welcome sweetie I am just so glad that a lot of you young ones have joined us and are making such informative videos keep up the good work happy stitching xx
I am new to your channel and what a great find! I was afraid of doing a Chatelaine but armed with your info I will embark on this journey...thank you and look forward to your tutorials and updates!
How I wish your video was available before I discovered Chatelaine! I am like you - I was equal parts excited and terrified starting my first large(r) design. I did a small freebie to see if I liked it (Martina's Roses). Promptly fell in love and then scoured the internet for information and tips and basics, etc. What I found was slightly disappointing so this here is a fantastic resource. So, thank you! I'm also so glad to see another Chatelaine stitcher here on TH-cam. I sort of felt like a lone wolf for a time. They are such gorgeous designs, it sometimes amazes me that all of that beauty comes from just one person. Stunning stuff. I love the silks and so I will likely always use the suggested threads. I'm willing to spend the extra cost, personally. But I love that you spent a significant of time discussing cost-conscious alternatives, because I know that to be a large deterrent for so many. Anyway, now that I've written a novel, I'll stop rambling. Keep up the amazing work and videos. : )
Thank you Jessie - love your comment! I've been stitching Chatelaines for 3 years now, so wish I had discovered them years ago! Like you my preference is to use the silks, but I'm not afraid to substitute if I feel the need and I would hate to think the cost puts stitchers off. Then you get stitchers that hate stitching with silks.......yeah I know makes no sense to me either! Hope we get to see some progress on your Frosty Knotgarden soon :)
Jessie's video about her Chatelelaine, Martina's Roses, is what peaked my interest in Chatelaines. I immediately downloaded all of the freebies and took a long time choosing my first big pattern.
Thank you for doing this video, it is very helpful. As you said stitching these designs are expensive and you really have to want to do it and I do. I did get some free patterns and will give them a go to see how it works out for me. I went on web page and fell in love with a couple and hope to do them someday. Again, thanks for taking the time to do this video!
Hi. I only just found yr channel last night. I've been binge watching yr videos and absolutely love yr stitching projects. Your chatelaines are gorgeous. Makes me want to start one. Take care. Xx
Thanks for stopping by Mel! Finding my channel now is brilliant as I’ve just posted my first video for 3 years, so you won’t have to wonder where I disapppeared 😂! Chatelaines are gorgeous, if you love them I would urge you to stitch one 💜, any questions just shout!
Thank you for doing this video. I have the Waterlily Pond Quilt and beginning to get the materials. It's a paper chart and very fearful but excited at the same time. You have given a lot of great advice and feel very impowered.
Thank you Katrina - yes Chatelaines make everyone feel overwhelmed at first, but once you get stitching you realise that you just follow the pattern like all other charts. Have fun gathering materials, I hope you can make a start soon, that design is beautiful!
Thank you so much for all of the good advice you have shared with us! This truly does clear things up for me. I am going to start with one of her freebies for sure and will be ordering a big piece and collecting supplies....big question now is which one to stitch!!!! They are all so beautiful.
Hi Amanda yet again another amazing video. I've seen a couple of small free chatelaine patterns that I'd like to try and I've also got my eye on a big one called Egyptian Garden. I found your video really helpful. Will definitely refer back to this one when I'm ready to start my chatelaine. Thanks again. You are doing an amazing job.
Glad to know you found the video helpful Lorraine, Egyptian Garden is a beautiful choice! I hope it won't be too long before we see signs of Chatelaine WIPs on your videos - the freebies are great designs to stitch up first for a practice run!
Hi! I have just watched this video and the previous one. I've had Dragonfly Lace - printed and beads etc for a while. On your advice, I've also just purchased the PDF version, Sooo much better. Thank you for everything you've shown us. I am starting to feel more confident with this, just waiting on the fabric to turn up now and work out these Jessica stitches....Think I will be googling :) Thanks again!
Another fab video. I also highlight which is the top end of my projects but I do it simply by having a 'T' marked on the top of my scroll frame. Obviously, that wouldn't work for hoops though! xx
I just looked at the Chatelaine gallery and the Chinese Garden done with only DMC looks really good, so there is hope I can do a full one after I do the free one's I got. Thanks again for all the info!
Theresa Feeney Thank you! Any Chatelaine can be stitched with all DMC and metallics - as you know my Chinese Garden was stitching using just DMC and the called for metallics and I love it as much as the others I've completed using silks!
MrsMilkybarKid I changed my mind and am doing both silk and DMC. I found a thread shoppe and they had a lot of Glorianna's on clearance for half price $3.75 each and I couldn't resist and I am going back for more!
MrsMilkybarKid Just a silly question, I looked on ECC and found a pattern I really love and looking at the buying options was wondering if when it says "full kit" do you get the pattern with that or do you still have to but it separate?
Hi Teresa, no the pattern is always separate - the full kit refers to fabric, bead pack and speciality threads only, as DMCs aren't included in the kit from ECC either. The charts are separate as not all charts are available through ECC, some charts are only available via yahoo groups. That will all change once Martina gets her new website up and running I'm sure :).
This was so helpful. I tend to get a little self-conscious about my abilities when it comes to a difficult-looking pattern, but I think I am ready to try a Chatelaine (with your help of course). I bought the Sparkling Swan mandala PDF, just waiting for it to arrive so I can have a look at it. I also bought the Mini Mandalas I set (PDF and kit) that I will try out first ... eek! McKenzie
McKenzie I can't tell you how excited I am to hear about your Chatelaine purchases! You won't need my help at all, you'll be fine! Hopefully Martina will add you to the Yahoo group soon and you'll be able to get your hands on those Sparkly Swans. Someone on the FB group is stitching it up on black too and it does look beautiful. Can't wait to see a video of your stash and starts on these :)
The two Chatelaines I got were Oriental Harem Garden and Medieval Cloister Herb Garden - I also really loved Pomarium Garden but that's finished as a "class" and not out yet as a chart. I ordered two Needlepoint Inc silks so that I could gaze at them and stroke them :) bit I think I might follow your suggestion to do the solid colours in DMC. The Harem materials come to almost $400 in the suggested materials!
Ooooo lovely - I have Herbularius and Pomarium in my stash and Tinctorium is a current class in the same series so I will have to get that one too! NPI silks are a brand I've not worked with, I know a few stitchers that love silks but haven't got on with them so have converted them to DMC to save their money for the more variegated silks. Cost is a definite factor with Chatelaines - to be honest they do stitch up quite quickly compared to say a HAED design which is comparatively much cheaper to kit, and you get your money's worth as they can take years to stitch! Chatelaines are just too pretty to resist though........!
Thank you. This has been extremely informative and helpful. I actually purchased a whole kit with floss and all years ago. Quite expensive. Started doing the center which was gorgeous then I abandoned the project. I have no idea why. :(. Anyway. I have downloaded one of the smaller freebies and am excited to give to a go again. With much appreciation. Thanks you!
I am thrilled to hear this Vanessa, I really hope you get back to stitching your big design (which one was it, just being nosey!), the freebies are an excellent way to get you back in to stitching these designs as they are gorgeous little pieces in themselves. If there is anything I can help you with Chatelaine wise just let me know - I love these designs so much and want other stitchers to enjoy them too!
Honestly. I didn't keep the pattern. Shame on me. I kept everything else. I didn't think I would ever come back to it. It had to be like 10 years ago. I have been stitching sinceb1988 when I moved to Upstate NY after getting married and a friend I was getting to know taught me. I also knit, spin, sew, quilt you name it. I love knitting and cross stitching the most.
Always envious of the talent of knitters! Many have tried and failed to teach me to knit over the years, so now I just admire the wonderful work of others :)
I just watched your Chatelaine video - may have been for the second time since I watched everyone of you videos back when you taught us on a regular basis - then you went away... :( (very sad face) I've just ordered and recieved the PDF for Butterfly Lace and also ordered the full kit from European Cross stitch co., i'm going with the 28 count fabric option. The materials won't be here for a while, but I wanted to get educated as much as possible before everything arrives. I've completed a Scarlet Quince chart, 66% through a HEAD chart, and one page into a Mystic Stitch chart since I got back into stitching. Chatelaine is a totally different animal, and I hope I can handle it. I'm thinking of having a Q-snap set up with 28count to do my practice stitches on, sampler style so I have something to show for my efforts - are you going to post some more for us that miss you? So happy to see you are still active with us!
Wonderful information!! Thank you! I can't find the conversions from Martina anywhere. I just purchased the herbarium chart. Not sure I would want to sub them but just wanted to check my options after watching your wonderful video!
I'm not sure which Chatelaine you have (Herbularius?), but any DMC conversion that Martina offers can be found in the Materials List, at least that is true of all my Chatelaines of which Herbularius is one :).
I don't use silks as I am vegan, so all the silks have been converted to DMC and in some cases other brands. Where a silk is noticeably variegated, then I have mixed DMC's together and it helps. My finished Chatelaines look amazing. Noone has commented on the different threads.
You have caused me to have to buy 2 Chatelaine charts - I am definitely blaming you because of all of your fantastic finishes in your last video but I was thinking "oh I will never be able to do that" and so my credit card was safe. After this video, however, there are so much helpful information that I felt enabled - lol! Can I ask you whether 28 count Jobelin would work rather than 28 count linen. I am put off linen by the slubs and the creasing - although it does look fantastic when stitched on.
Ha ha I should put an enabling warning on all my videos! Jobelan is a perfect fabric - I've stitched the majority of my Chatelaines on it, Chinese Garden and Butterfly Lace on 28ct Jobelan and Cattleya Orchid on 32ct Jobelan. As long as it is 28ct or 32ct you're fine, Jobelan, Lugana, Jazlyn etc are all great choices it doesn't have to be linen :). What Chatelaines have you gone for?
I am new to all this. So trying to find my way. I don't seem to be able to find where I can sign up for one of Martina's classes. I have followed your link below. Your videos are so helpful. Well done.
Hi Helen that's because this video is well over a year old and Martina now sells all her designs via her own shop rather than through yahoo classes :). If you go here: chatelaine.de/shop/ you should be able to find what you are looking for.
+Helen Tarr Thanks for your prompt reply. Thats what I thought but just needed to check. I am not sure that I should thank you for telling me about the Chatelaine Designs or not. I'll tell you in 6 months time!!
I am trying to catch up with all your videos. So inspiring!!! Thanj you for sharing you knowledge. Years past I was an avid stitcher so of course for "come back" to stitching I must do a Chataline. Would you please share some information that I have not been able to track down on your videos. Do you stitch in hand and do you grid? Thank you so very much for you inspiration and for sharing you vast knowledge. Sincerely, Linda
Hi Linda, thank you for your sweet comment. In answer to your questions, I don’t stitch in hand and the only projects I ever gridded my fabric for were HAEDs. You can see my stitching set up for large projects in my Tool Time Tag video. I’ve barely stitched at all in the last twelve months so it feels odd to remember the projects I used to stitch! Enjoy your Chatelaine!
Hi, I am really enjoying your videos. I have had the chatelaine pattern Victorian garden in my collection for a while! but have been worried about the repetitiveness of the design. I also think the black and white print pattern feels to hard to read. Going to take your advice and get the PDF pattern as I now only use my iPad to stitch
Thank you Kirrily! Yes, the pdf patterns make life so much easier when stitching Chatelaines, as does using a colour chart - at least that's my experience :).
I love the Pomarium Mandala and have seen it is a WIP of yours. Do you know if the pattern will be available in the future as it isn't available on European XS? You are my Chatelaine go-to person, and also my HAED go-to person, and also my silks, beading, any stitching questions go-to person.
I love being a stitching go to person Jan! The chart for Pomarium has yet to be released for general sale on European Cross Stitch by Martina. Hopefully at some point it will be available on ECC, although there has been talk of Martina having her own website in the future instead of yahoo groups etc. I signed up for the original online class which is how I have the pattern :). The latest design in that series in Tinctorium, which I will buy before the class finishes I expect as I am a sucker for a chart series!
Thanks for that. It is as I thought. Hopefully one day I can purchase that pattern - I love the fruit trees. Will the online classes be advertised on the FB page as well as the yahoo page?
Yes, that seems to have been the way of things of late. Martina also usually let's us know when she has sent files across to ECC too, so keep your eyes peeled for any news on Pomarium :)
Brilliant, thanks for these wonderful hints, tips and guidance on Chatelaines. There is one thread I was curious about, the Rainbow Gallery Petite Braid. It is the only thread I have not been able to get yet. I ordered it, but it still has not arrived. I would love to know if there are any alternatives I might use in future projects.
Glad you felt the video was useful! It is worth hunting the PTB down (I love it and can't live without it!), I forget where you are in the world Palette PC, but I know for some bizarre reason123.stitch don't stock this thread. If you are in the US, then Cindy at European Cross Stitch Company is always happy to send just certain threads for Chatelaines, it doesn't need to be the whole kit, just drop her an email, I have done this in the past myself. If you have any other questions I am always happy to help out my fellow stitchers!
MrsMilkybarKid I am in California, I was able to find online sources for the PTB. I ordered it from Texas. They are very slow in shipping and they did not actually have everything in stock as they stated on the website. I will definitely work with Cindy in the future. She has been a wonderful resource for the bead packets and pdfs.
This has been so helpful!! I am getting ready to start my first Chatelaine - Gardens of London - and really needed all this information. There is one question I have...I am a Windows user and have just bought an iPad. Do you have any hints/tips on downloading the chart to an iPad and how to use it once it's downloaded.
Absolutely scotbrit! I talk about the apps I use in my #2 video (and provide links), but to save you watching me waffle, I use 2 apps, Dropbox (free cloud based storage) and GoodNotes (PDF reader and annotating tool) - I cannot recommend GoodNotes enough! On your iPad you can download the charts straight from the yahoo group into your Dropbox and from there you can import your charts into GoodNotes, very very simple and user friendly! You can of course just use adobe reader to enlarge and print on your PC - but it is sooooooo much easier if you have an iPad (GoodNotes is iPad only). Hope that helps, any more questions don't be afraid to ask :)
Thank you for the answer to my gridding question. So are chatelaines stitched without grids? Other than counting the 4,5, or 6 threads on 20 x 20 grid, why would that be a hindrance? I just finished stitching my first section of metallic thread and also a fuzzy white whisper thread, which was YIKES!! But I did it. So counting will seem easy in comparison LOL😊 Bottom line is I don't mind the counting if it's still possible to grid.
Stitching methods are a very personal thing - so if you feel gridding will help you than that is your answer! I've never seen anyone grid out their fabric to stitch a Chatelaine, at most some will baste in the vertical and horizontal centre lines. I guess it's because the stitches vary so much in size, they don't fit into neat and uniform 10 x 10 boxes unlike say a section of a HAED :).
You might have mentioned this, but what kind of scroll frame do you use? Is it a split dowel one? I have my Watergarden Chatelaine on a 17x17 Q-snap and it is so big and bulky. I think I might want to try a scroll frame if the side tension is good as well...
I use an Easy Clip rotating hand frame, you can see the type in my #2 video where I talk a little bit about them. The tension isn't drum tight, but I can live with it. You can get little clips (or fashion some yourself) to help with side tension, they look like little braces/suspenders :)
Hi there. Yes the free design I am doing is Deb's Roses. Design size 50 X 50. It does say in the list petite beads. Is that size 11 seed beads .? I have a ton of beads so I will use what I have but just wondering about the meaning if petite. Thanks
Yes, that pattern for some reason does call for petite beads (size 15), but size 11 would be fine as long as you are stitching on a 28/32ct fabric or aida equivalent, use whatever beads you have in your stash. I prefer using size 11 as it means I don't have to change my needle to an evil beading one :)! Most of Martina's designs call for size 11 Delicas and the occasional pot of bugle beads.
Since I'm totally dependent on gridding, for my Chinese Garden, if I get a 28 count evenweave, do I make 20 x 20 grid squares to match the 10 x 10 pattern? Of course I won't be starting this for quite some time. But I want to prep properly. Thanks.
A 20 x 20 grid will mean you will fit in 10 x 10 stitches when stitched over 2. I'm not entirely sure how useful this type of gridding will be with a Chatelaine though, as while the majority of the cross stitches are stitched over 2, the phoenixes are stitched over 1 and a lot of the speciality stitches are stitched over 4,5 and 6 threads - so it may prove more of a hinderance than a help!
12-30-14. I printed out the pattern of Chinese garden. And I counted the grid blocks starting at the very first stitch on top (wisteria leaf or something) and I number the top of that block as "1". When I counted the grid blocks to the very bottom last stitch, it came out to "31." From left to right it came out also to "30." Am I wrong?
I have no idea, sorry! My pattern is split into 12 pieces so I couldn't accurately say, but the design is 289 by 289 stitches, so depending on how the design is centred on the grid the pattern could cover 29/30/31 grids across.
Always size 11 :). Some of the freebies use Mill Hill seed beads (so that would mean the regular size not the petite) and others use Delicas (size 11). Which freebie are you stitching Vanessa?
Thank you! Just discovered your video when doing some research on starting chatelaine. I've just bought Gardens of London so your info was extremely helpful indeed, I wrote lots of notes. I got me thinking with regards to saving money with threads etc. My chatelaine recommends 36 count, 1 over 1. But was hoping to swop to 28 count 1 over 1 instead. Do you think this would work. I'm thinking would beads fit etc on 28 rather than 36. I'm am a beginner at the chatalaine club, hence my question. I'm thinking 36 is equivalent to 18 count, 1 over 1 on 28 count takes it down smaller??
Hiya, you are right that 36ct stitched over 2 is the equivalent size to 18ct stitched over 1. Are you sure Gardens of London is recommended to be stitched on 36ct? You can of course stitch on whichever count you wish, however due to the beads, if you want to stitch Chatelaines as charted they are usually recommended to be stitched on 28 or 32ct over 2 (14ct or 16ct over 1). You can use 36ct, you just might need to adjust the beads or use a smaller size of bead. Regardless of what you decide, enjoy stitching it!
MrsMilkybarKid Hiya!! In chatting with Debra Fassler, who also has the pattern, I realised I had got confused with fabric size. Your right Debra pointed out it recommends 28 or 32 count. Because I've ordered a collect of charts from birthday money, it is dragons of samatra that calls for 36 count. Silly me!! That's made life easier for me. Thanks for you reply!
It does, although all the butterflies are stitched in DMC anyway (80+ different colours), Martina does give a possible match for the silks used, but because these are variegated she can never give an exact match in DMC.
Hello, thank you so very much for taking time to answer my stitching questions. I am so sad that you are not stitching any longer. I am sure you have moved on to to another hobby. You are so very talented. I will continue to enjoy your videos. Thank you again for you time and your kindness. I hope you are well and happy.
+ExitSiign I know that there is a file in the Chatelaine FB Group that lists substitutions for threads that are now retired. As some of the older patterns are coming up to 20 years old, I should imagine it would be quite difficult to track down skeins of discontinued threads, so a substitution may be the way to go. HTH
This video is well over two years old now and in that time Vikki has stopped selling silk from that website. The only place you will occasionally see her silk for sale is through her Etsy Shop, but she only ships within the US: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HandDyedFibers?ref=l2-shopheader-name. I don't know if there is a direct conversion between NPI to HDF but both convert straight into DMC so you might need to convert NPI to DMC and then DMC to HDF. HTH
I have just been on the Chatelaine website to download a free chart but its sending me to file dropper where I have to pay to sign up. Is this correct??
No that is not right at all!!! Here is the link to the freebies: chatelaine-design.de/newweb/cgi-bin/general.cgi?free- I've just tried it on my iPad to make sure and it is fine. What should happen when you click on a freebie is that it automatically opens the PDF file which you can then save onto your device - no other software is required at all! Hope you manage to get it to work :).
I’ve really enjoyed your thoughts on using cotton threads. Very common sense ❤
You are such a good teacher! Wish someone had told me about UP and DOWN before I made the mistake that taught me about it! Thank you so much for these videos. Enjoy them so much.
Thank you Shadow5618, you are very welcome :)

thanks for this fabulous information! I will definately save this video to watch in the future when I start a Chatelaine.
Thanks Jan, I know it was a bit of a niche topic to do a video on, but so glad you will find it helpful when your Chatelaine stitching time comes!

Thanks Orietta - not tempted you yet then :)
Vanessa Jones
I am multicraftual as well. Are you on Ravelry? Are you planning to spin for Tour de Fleece? Please friend me on Rav I am paletpc.
Fantastic! Thank you so much for this.
Sooo helpful! Thank you! I am an in-hand “sewer”… should I dare attempt a chatelaine using this method? Thank you!
There are many stitchers that do - don't let it put you off ❤
@@mrsmilkybarkid3318 oh you are so sweet, thank you for your reply.
Great video, you're a mine of information.
Sincerely,
Linda
Hi Linda, thank you for your sweet comment. In answer to your questions, I don’t stitch in hand and the only projects I ever gridded my fabric for were HAEDs. You can see my stitching set up for large projects in my Tool Time Tag video. I’ve barely stitched at all in the last twelve months so it feels odd to remember the projects I used to stitch! Enjoy your Chatelaine!
This video is so helpful! Thank you so much!
Thank you for all the information it's all very helpful!!
You're welcome!
Will do x
Brilliant, thanks for these wonderful hints, tips and guidance on Chatelaines. There is one thread I was curious about, the Rainbow Gallery Petite Braid. It is the only thread I have not been able to get yet. I ordered it, but it still has not arrived. I would love to know if there are any alternatives I might use in future projects.
I just watched your other video and you answered my question regarding metallic thread there. Please ignore this question. Thanks.
MrsMilkybarKid
Thank you very much...I will try what you suggest.
Thank you so much
You are welcome Anne :)
Hi I have stitched years but always shy away from specialty stitches I am interested in doing Scotland mandala give me advice please thanks so much
A question. I am starting one of the free chatelaine designs. It doesn't state the bead size. What size bead is normally used?
Does butterfly lace have a thread conversion list please? Thank you from sunny Malta .
I wish you'd make a new video sometime :)
Do you have any recommendations for places to find retired (/discontinued) threads that are called for in some of the Chatelaine patterns?
+ExitSiign I know that there is a file in the Chatelaine FB Group that lists substitutions for threads that are now retired. As some of the older patterns are coming up to 20 years old, I should imagine it would be quite difficult to track down skeins of discontinued threads, so a substitution may be the way to go. HTH
The website for "hand Dyed Fibers" doesn't seem to be working. Where exactly can I buy those silks from? And is there a converstion from NPI to HDF?
This video is well over two years old now and in that time Vikki has stopped selling silk from that website. The only place you will occasionally see her silk for sale is through her Etsy Shop, but she only ships within the US: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HandDyedFibers?ref=l2-shopheader-name. I don't know if there is a direct conversion between NPI to HDF but both convert straight into DMC so you might need to convert NPI to DMC and then DMC to HDF. HTH
Thank you! :)
Is the artists name Martina Rosenburg? I heard she is no longer with us, is that right?
Sadly that's correct, Martina passed away in December 2017 and her daughter Ela took over looking after her designs.
Thank you @@mrsmilkybarkid3318
Conservationally, silk will last a lot longer than DMC on a longeivity standpoint for centuries.
Very true Pat - but I'm not anticipating any of my stitching will be heirlooms :)
They sure could be as they are wonderful!
