  • In 2008, Cate Blanchett and Ruby Dee were the front-runners to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but then they lost in a shocking upset to Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton. In this video, I break down that year's fascinating Oscar race and discuss the reasons why Swinton defeated Blanchett and Dee for the award. #oscars #academyawards #bestsupportingactress #tildaswinton #cateblanchett #rubydee #brianrowevideo

    What I love about Tilda (and what is the reason why she's never been nominated for anything else and never will be) is because of her humility. She is the most anti-Hollywood celebrity out there. She doesn't campaign, she doesn't kiss ass, she's not obsessed with winning or being the star. She couldn't possibly care less. The academy hates people who doesn't suck up to them and who doesn't consider winning one of their rewards a highlight of their life. Tilda's one of them. That's why she can't be stopped. Because this is all just a fun hobby that she just happens to be extraordinarily good at.

      Agreed. Tilda is really a loose cannon who just seems like the type to not care about the Oscar, and therefore be treated in kind by them. She does anything she wants and happens to be incredible in it all. It’s not surprising to see her in an Oscar worthy role, but it’s almost more likely to see her playing the head of a staten island based vampire council on an fx mockumentary

    The acting range Blanchett is always astounding to behold. Playing Elizabeth and Bob Dylan in the same year and getting nominated. IMO she was snubbed for I'm not there. Her incarnation of Bob Dylan was an acting miracle.

      She's the real example of surpassing her own self one time after another. She's one of best actresses alive. She actually deserved this one. More than 2005 to be honest and 1999 she was totally robbed.
      If world was a fair place Cate Blanchett would've had 3 Oscars by now.
      Best Actress - 1999 for 'Elizabeth'
      Best Suppoting Actress - 2008 for 'I'm Not There'
      Best Actress - 2014 for Blue Jasmine (It happend 😁🙌🙌🙌

      Yessss!!! The thing about Tilda is that I've learned that the Oscars are super super egotistical and they HATE if you don't kiss their ass and gush about this award. Her indifference towards her win and subsequent confirmation that she had given her Oscar to her agent solidified that she'd never be nominated again, no matter the quality of her work .

    Tilda is an unusual character actor that doesn't get enough recognition for her work. Michael Clayton was an exceptional thriller drama with stellar acting nods to its lead and support. I'm also disheartened that Ruby Dee's work in cinema didn't receive as much attention. Given her passing, It would have been a great send off to have become an Oscar winning actress, but as the chips landed, it wasn't to be. Maybe if her role was expanded, I believe she might have won. Cate is great, and after seeing her newest performance, her career still has more milestones ahead, and a possible Oscar nom for Tàr. I'm glad that Tilda can be referred to as an Academy Award winning actress to her credit. Her performance coupled with her expressive eyes at odds with her cold and calculated corporate villainy were merited in her win. I hope she gets a chance to land a leading award nod sometime soon. She's an exceptional actress that's, not only versatile, but chameleon-like in her range.

      The way she says "you mean you don't want the money", always gives me chills. She's a despicable character but she portrays fear, denial, and panic so well in her part. You feel bad for her and all the pressure she's under, and then you remember she's a shadowy murderer.

    Swinton is a great actor and her career is filled with bold choices, so I'm glad she's an academy award winner. However, my favorite supporting performance that year was, by far, Vanessa Redgrave as Old Briony in "Atonement". The movie itself was astonishing (the Sense and Sensibility of the 2000s, it even had a teenage version of Kate Winslet named Saoirse Ronan) but Ms. Redgrave's performance was nothing short of spectacular. 15 years later, I still can't watch the ending of that movie without being completely destroyed by her words and the look in her eyes. "I... Gave them.... Their happiness." Well, the Academy... Should've given Vanessa Redgrave... That fucking Oscar.

  • @outinsider

    I wanted Ruby Dee to win, mostly because she never was nominated for an Oscar before, and her film work was/is legendary even to this day. She did theatre and television too. I also met her, and it would have been nice within a two year span of us meeting to see her win an Oscar. I thought the way she was in American Gangster where we didn't see her a lot meant we were supposed to see her more because of the impression she gave in the performance of her role in the film. Yes, there is the slap scene, but she did carry.
    Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton was very compelling when I watched it. Clooney was at the second peak of his game in this political/legal thriller. Tilda's character was relatable as one can be as a planned legal strategist trying to get away with murder but caught in the act. Honestly, when her character falls to the floor after the last scene with Clooney, it's almost sad how I hope she is okay, even if its deserved.
    I can understand why the Academy likes to be belated in recognizing legendary talent, but it seems the younger, more viable at the box office person usually wins. Dee's nomination was deserved, and it's not like she wasn't already a voting member of the Academy herself. I still remember how they showed the actual voting process from that ceremony. They need to do that from time to time. Dee was in that segment, I believe.
    I know some legends finally get their flowers, whether by supporting actor categories or by Honorary Oscar. But, it would have been nice to see Ruby Dee with an Oscar to her name. Her nomination signaled to me that legendary Black talent in Hollywood would be recognized for surviving and creating so long.

    This was a very exciting year for this category. Swinton’s win was a shock although in hindsight it makes sense how it happened. My thoughts:
    1. I’m Not There, American Gangster, and Gone Baby Gone had no support from the Academy so it was always going to be hard to win against a contender like Tilda Swinton from Michael Clayton which had eight Oscar nominations and was popular as you said.
    2. Not everybody liked Blanchett’s performance, Dee’s was too short, and Ryan was playing an unsympathetic character. And then Ronan disappears after the first half of Atonement which had run out of Oscar buzz by then and got snubbed in the Directing category.
    3. Oscar voters wanted to spread the wealth and picked Swinton who really is quite good in Michael Clayton as you said.

      Not just the Best Actress race in 2021, but the entire year in general. The Best Supporting Actor was the only sure lock that year as Daniel Kaluuya was the only actor to sweep in every precursor. Best Supporting Actress was unpredictable until the late surge of support for Yu-Jung- Yuen at the last minute. Best Actress remained unpredictable throughout, and Best Actor had an unexpected win with Anthony Hopkins.

    I must have been 14 back then but I already followed the Oscar season. It wasn't Cate vs. Ruby vs. Tilda. For most of the season, it was Amy Ryan who swept the critics, including Critics' Choice, the New York Film Critics, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. She also won the majority of the regional critics and the NBR. She was very much in the running. Blanchett looked unlikely because of the nature of the part and the rather conservative Academy. Ruby Dee won too little too late. In the end, it was about the film they liked a lot and couldn't honour elsewhere. This is one of these years where I predicted all 4 acting winners by going out on a limb in two categories (Actress and Supporting Actress). It doesn't always pay off, but back then, it paid off.

    Loved the movie, loved the role, love the actor, loved the performance. Swinton deserved the Oscar. A win that has aged well for the Academy. Her performance MADE the film. The 00's was the decade to deliver two types of performances if you wanted gold: portray a real person or a scene-stealing villain. Three of the four Oscar wins that year went to villainous characters. It was always going to be Swinton.
    Swinton and Blanchett were seen as having gave the strongest performances that year, but Blanchett had already won an Oscar and the film flopped at the box office, so she wasn't going to win. Also, the Elizabeth sequel wasn't as good, so it was never going to be a winning year for Blanchett. Ronan was too young to win. No child actor was going to win another Oscar so soon after they gave it to Anna Paquin for The Piano which only happened decades after Tatum in Paper Moon (Kahn was robbed). Ruby Dee was too old and not in the film long enough. Chiefly, Gangster was seen as more of a popcorn flick with its trendy Jay-Z soundtrack than serious awards contender. Gone Baby Gone was seen as a grade B drama than truly Oscar worthy and Amy Ryan was too low profile to win.
    Swinton had delivered memorable performances in the past and had a hit blockbuster film with Wardrobe. The combination of 1) recent box office success, 2) strong body of work, and 3) a villainous role in a stronger film overall meant her time had come.

    Best Actress - 1999 for 'Elizabeth'
    Best Suppoting Actress - 2008 for 'I'm Not There'
    Best Actress - 2014 for Blue Jasmine (It happend 😁🙌🙌🙌)
    A fourth with her monstrous performance in TAR giving her a 4th 😄

    Tilda is hard to put in a particular box or does the usual that’s why I think she hasn’t been nominated more. She’s marches to her own beat. Lucky for us . Once in a while out of the box gets more recognition but mostly awards go to certain types of roles.

  • @Dennisanyone-
    @Dennisanyone- ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A case of being in a best pic nominee made the difference in Tildas category definitely. Entertainment Weekly picked her, so they knew what was up. I’m guessing Ruby came close, with her legendary career, SAG, and being in a slick popcorn film with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe no less. Not enough people saw I’m Not There (the brief Heath Ledger frontal nudity was amazing! Lol) so Cate in third.

  • @branagain
    @branagain ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I disagree in that this was an unpredictable category. I thought Tilda Swinton was the frontrunner. Michael Clayton was the most nominated film in the acting categories, and it was a well liked film so it was going to win something and Supporting Actress was the most likely way it would win. Ruby Dee was too brief of a performance, as you said in the video. Also, Swinton just starred in a blockbuster which was Narnia. And she had that big scene at the end of Michael Clayton with her confrontation with George Clooney. So she was in a well respected movie, she has box office clout, and she had a big scene. I think her win was inevitable.

    Only 1-min. in and I’m already staunchly disagreeing with a contextual premise: Given his track record with the academy, Peter o’Toole could have definitely pulled off a surprise win over Whitaker that year. The Academy loves awarding a long-overdue and respected performer, whatever the precursors. The man had seven prior nominations, some in very high-profile films!

    • @RichYouTube
      @RichYouTube ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, lol, “probably enough voters decided to go with the performance they liked best” - i.e., calling out the academy for functioning as it’s supposed to

      Yes, agreed that O’Toole should’ve been more of a contender, but Whitaker just won everything that season, so a different Oscar winner would’ve been shocking.

    I simply recall vowing to smash my set if Ruby Dee won, so I'm pleased that didn't happen. It would have been an Ameche-esque insult to the competition. I also figured Blanchett was the most likely given the type of performance (gender-bending, disguised with makeup, playing a real person) but the possibility that an insufficient number of voters had seen "I'm Not There" was a major worry. Swinton is fine, but it isn't a great or dynamic role, and it's the sort of outcome that leaves me reasonably confident many voters just didn't see some of the other movies.
