I just purchased a Super Console Cube X 3 system, and these two games are on it. They really are a lot of fun to play!! Great video, wouldn't have known this game existed. Happy gaming!
So it's basically Megaman, but done in a Metroidvania-style with an insane difficulty spike right out of the gate? Sounds like a good time to me!! Hopefully it will see a Steam release at some point.
Seeing this in my sub feed put a big smile on my face! I vividly remember when I Wanna Be The Guy and Battle Kid were decently new, back in the early 2010s, and it was kind of a big deal for Battle Kid specifically, because the indie/homebrew scene was starting to pick up widespread familiarity and very few developers had actually gone the extra mile to put their game on a discontinued system.
Happy Friday Aaron! Thanks for fighting through the scratchy throat to give us another top notch video! This game looks awesome and I need it in my life! I also feel that art design gives off a Legacy of the Wizard vibe. I'll definitely be checking this out. Have a great weekend. Health and happiness to you and the fam bud!
late to the party! Hello FNA fans and credit to FNA for playing injured this week ;-) I really enjoyed this as I have zero background with or knowledge of homebrew games. But even without a trip down gaming memory lane, an entirely worthwhile watch. Thanks for posting
Weird! I have a cartridge from 2012, and theres a lot of stuff thats different in these new console releases apparently. All that story at the beginning wasn't in the original version. The flower boss pattern appears to be different, and that early room with the eye monster and two ice blocks now has a safe platform on the left wall which wasn't there before - you had to fall and land on the ice block to in the middle. And that's just what I immediately noticed!
There were about two months of additional work put into the game's famicom port in japan. That version is the one that subsequennt ports were based on.
Battle Kid 2 is even better than 1. It's a bit more user friendly, has a map for starters, and feels more fleshed out than 1. Both are tough as nails though, 2 is just a little easier than 1.
I haven't played this, but I did play I Wanna be the Guy, and it's so brutal that it's almost comical; it had me laughing out loud at the absurdity of my situation just as often as it had me shouting incoherently in other languages, because the English-speaking part of my brain had just SHUT OFF. I enjoyed my time with it, but I'm not sure I'll play it again.
I was playing on Very Easy mode lol ... there are none on Normal or above... anything above Normal has a specific number of deaths before it's game over
I have the original cartridge and BK1 limits continues(deaths) on higher difficulties but never gives more health, regardless of difficulty. That was introduced in 2, and apparently the newer digital versions of 1.
I always did wonder whether this game had anything to do with I Wanna Be The Guy, myself; after all, Timmy bears more than a passing resemblance to The Kid. Also, if a Switch port is indeed in the works, I'll definitely pick it up there; as, for me, it would feel just wrong to play an NES game, even a homebrew, on anything other than Nintendo hardware! 😉
If he was gonna do metroidvania style but with single screen rooms, he should have done it faxanadu style, to give a sense of continuity between screens. Simple black and then loading the next screen doesn't feel as good.
Thanks for checking out the game and the review.
Love the subtle flex on Game Grumps, beating the flower boss.
Thanks for the Review! I will pick it up when it goes to Switch !
RED PLANT
BLUE PLANT
PURPLE PLANT
Ah, he's playing it on very easy though. Doesn't count.
I will never forget this game for that one Game Grumps episode.
Arin vs Plant Boss
It. Was. Legendary.
I was going to say the same thing. I'm like, "This game looks familiar. GAME GRUMPS."
I HIT END! I HIT END! * screams *
I own battlekid and battlekid 2. Both highlights of NES homebrewing.
Very Mega-Man inspired.... Probably why I ❤️ it.
Ahhh one of the first home-brews sold on the ( luckily ,good radiance ) DEAD nintendoage forums.

I thought you sounded kinda quiet. Hope you feel better soon!

Happy Friday to all!
Another cool video. I hope you get to feeling better.
The disappearing blocks are definitely a mega man throwback.
He added more story than the NES version. Chester was just some guy you don't see until the end.
Looks like a great game. Perfect for the evercade. Battle kid 1 and 2 dual cart
Wow this game looks awesome! :D If this does come out on Switch I'll definitely buy it! Thanks for sharing this video!

I love this channel, it needs way more subscribers!
Looks like a very good mega man Metroid hybrid game wish I would have gotten an actual cartridge!

Never was for homebrews but like always nice video.
I have emulated this game and it was kind of hard but fun
I saw this in the digital store and was curious about it.
I really enjoyed I Wanna be the Guy! I am going to pick this up, thanks for the review!
Hope you give the sequel a try as well. It's even better in my opinion:D
Wait, there are hit points now? I don't think that was a thing in old school Battle Kid, no matter the difficulty level.

I never heard of it either 😕
Cool game!
Looks pretty good aside from the cartridge illustration.
It looks right at home beside Mega Man's legendarily dorky box art.
Normally I hate homebrews, but this looks alright?
Dear Friday night arcade please do a review on the kings quest series and please hurry the video remake of space quest 3
Nice!
Cool
