In this video Daniel and Mick take an overview of the fabled Ibanez Tube Screamer, comparing a handful of classic models.
Tube Screamers have been used by a huge range of guitarists, spanning blues to rock to metal and plenty more besides. They work very well in certain situations, less well in others - topics that we touch on during the video.
    The pedals today are:
    • Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer (Keeley MOD+, non true bypass) - no longer made
    • Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2dvn8Xy
    USA: imp.i114863.ne...
    • Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Screamer

    • Ibanez Tube Screamer Mini
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2dRVXa2
    USA: imp.i114863.ne...
    • Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive (silver, original edition)
    • Boss BD-2 Blues Driver (Keeley mod) - no longer made, links to the BD-2W
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2DwcjzE
    USA: bit.ly/3leezR7
    Australia: bit.ly/3lmZUUf
Amps today are a Fender Super Reverb (4x10-inch Jensen alnico speakers), and a Hamstead Artist 20+RT through a 1x12 cabinet with a Celestion Alnico Blue speaker.
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2LRf2ae
    Interesting bits and go-to sections…
    • Fender Super Reverb, no pedals: 1:55

    • TS808 & TS9 comparison: 5:39
    • TS9DX & TS9 comparison: 7:00
    • TS9DX different modes: 7:57
    • Telecaster and the TS9DX: 10:35
    • Mini and 808 comparison: 12:15
    • Mini and 808 max gain: 13:45
    • Mini and TS9 max gain: 15:10
    • Using a gainer amp: 17:18
    • Comparison with Klon Centaur: 22:33
    • 808 boosted by Klon: 23:40
    • Comparison with Boss BD-2 Blues Driver: 25:39
    • Les Paul, Hamstead, Mini Tube Screamer: 28:25
    • Les Paul, Hamstead, Boss BD-2: 29:40
    • Both amps with 808: 30:59
Daniel is playing a Fender Custom Shop ’63 Telecaster and Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard. Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster.

I bought a TS10 Tube screamer built in 1986 for $6.00 at a thrift store. It is in mint condition. It also is an early Japanese Model that is equipped with the Japanese JRC-4558 chip. I opened it up, used a magnifying glass to read the chip. Best deal I ever got. Sounds great!

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years (yikes!) and I have learned as much about tone over the past year from your videos as the previous two decades. I finally understand things, like "American voiced amplifier," that baffled me for years, but I was too embarrassed to ask. Your videos are great for beginners and for more experienced players like me. There is a lot that I (thought) I knew coming in, but your videos really help fill in the gaps. I'm happier with my tone now than I have ever been, and it inspires me to play more and push the envelope. Thank you for all the work and care that you put into these videos. It is truly appreciated.

I cracked open my TS9DX to see what was going on with that mode switch and this is what I found:
    - TS9 mode is standard a TS9 circuit
    - + mode was double diode clipping (two parallel pairs)
    - Hot mode was two red LEDs for clipping
    - TURBO was diode free op-amp only clipping
Really enjoyed the video by the way :D

The hand wired Ibanez tube screamer is the best tube screamer I’ve ever heard. I didn’t want to like it so much because of the silly cost but I just couldn’t deny the difference in sound and articulation. So I bought one. Fortunately, it gives back every time I turn it on by making me happy from the tone I get.

Cheers from the States, gents! I just purchased 2 new pedals because of the demos you guys.have done. I got the Tube Screamer Mini and the Tumnus. Both are very different, but both are very, very, VERY nice. I have a TS-5, TS-7, TS-9, TS-808 and several Tube Screamer clones, but the mini is amazing. The Tumnus is like a magic little box of tone that really makes a slightly driven amp sing it's heart out. I've been watching you since you were Daniel the Gig Rig. I never miss any of your vids and think they are some of the best on TH-cam. Thanks for all the great demos and comparisons you produce. You guys are great!

At around 17:00 Mick hits the nail right on the head. There's a high pass filter in the clipping section at 720Hz. Everything below that gets less and less clipping the lower the frequency goes. So the bass frequencies aren't getting clipped as much, which does contribute greatly to the clarity and tightness a Tubescreamer offers.

    • @hybro8
      @hybro8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@ThatPedalShow but I think that’s not really the point of this exercise, a car environment is typically were I listen to most of my music so thats the real test for me, although I know TH-cam compresses their videos quite a lot.
Even with my studio headphones it’s extremely hard to tell the difference, I can imagine an experienced listener could pick up on the nuances of each pedal, but 99% of people who would be listening in a live environment would have no clue if you was using a TS mini vs a Klon, and that’s the most important thing for me.

I always love your shows, and love the tones you got on this show. One thing I like is that with similar gear to what other reviewers use, you guys get tones more like those I'd be looking for - so as my tastes match yours, I find your reviews more helpful. Have you thought of putting clips on Sound Cloud, so that people could listen to, say 20 seconds of the same segment of playing, repeated through different pedals via a looper? Then one could just click on the clip and swap between pedals and compare back and forth easily. Thanks again. Your discussion is always very interesting and helpful, too - and fun.

@27:00 as a long-time Gibson player , I just bought a JHS bonsai. I have to admit I really wasn't that impressed with it in any setting. I thought the bd2 was a much better pedal and did a much better job of driving Fender amps, which I use exclusively. However, I bought my first strat (Suhr Classic Antique S, v63 single coils) in order to diversify my collection. I was about to sell the Banzai to offset some of the cost until I played it with the Suhr.
Well, the heavens opened up, the stars aligned and I've been thoroughly addicted to playing with the Bonsai in TS808 mode through a Deluxe Reverb for about a month in full on SRV mode....
Just forwarded this vid to a buddy of mine that I gave a TS mini to as his first overdrive pedal to go with his new Strat. I'm sure it will serve him well.

Nothing beats the TS808 Mini for TS-style stand-alone gain and amp-pushing boost. Unless you have $600 for an 80's 808 or $400 for Analogman Silver/Classic with Bob's Boost on the Maxon808, then: the TS808 Mini is THE Tubescreamer everyone should have one their board. Put one in front of your overdrives and/or fuzzes and something like an Xotic AC or RC Booster after, and you are in tonal heaven. Unless you can find and afford a Coloursound Power Booster....if not, TS>Overdrive/Fuzz>AC or RC Booster + mod & delay > Amp (reverb optional).
Tonal bliss. I mean it's just my opinion...but i lurve it. Tiny but powerful.

I think of the tube screamer now as a fixed eq pedal, esp. for a strat and fender amp. The BD-2, I dunno what it is, but I like it. It seems the BD-2 is for amp breaks and the tube screamer is for lead breaks! Thus the BD-2 is more for rhythm playing, and then layering on the tube screamer for leads.

It was originally designed by Nisshin, a Japanese company making pickups for Ibanez. They were allowed to market the pedal under the name Maxon. FYI, the Boss OD-1 was coming out at the same time and has almost the same design.

In 1982, my father bought me my first good guitar for my birthday; an Ibanez Blazer Series. The music store was running a promotion that allowed you two free Ibanez pedals with the purchase of an Ibanez guitar. Being the little rocker that I was, I picked a Sonic Distortion and a Tube Screamer. The TS name had me thinking of screaming banshee distortion, feedback, etc., all of which it wasn't! I tried it and was very disappointed. I put it away in a drawer and basically forgot about it until a few years later when I "matured" and discovered SRV. Because of my initial disgust, my TS9 was spared the abuse, theft and trade offs that happens to most teenagers gear. It is still in beautiful condition, sounds perfect and remains a staple on my PB.

Does a Blues Driver stack into a tubescreamer? My blues driver has a much fuller sound than a TS, lots of bottom end.. so if I stack it..
Will it be negating the classic mid range hump of the TS?... It's s difficult for pub musicians to check this stuff out at suitable volume.... thanks guys love this channel.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Peter Close It'll work fine. If you put the TS afterwards you'll still shelve off some bottom and top and keep the mid hump. Set the level high and the gain low on the TS so it doesn't compress too much. It should work really well as a booster for the BD-2. Cheers!
