- Howdy y'all! Summer Roving Crew 245 Hitch #2 with @southwestconservationcorps in the books!
Our Task: Clear corridor, clean tread, reinforce rock drains on 4 miles of sub-alpine trail in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness.
Driving by itself was a trip in itself: 10 or so miles of loose 4x4 roads brought up the pucker factor just to get to camp.
Starting from the top at the lake, we worked our way down past snow fields and steep gullies crosscut saw bucking large logs and redefining tread where long winter took its toll. Every day at around 2pm, snow or rain would douse us and the parched landscape. The last full day of work even showed us thick, moody fog (makes me want to move to the PNW even more). Tools were cached from the last point of work for the day, then reclaimed in the morning. It was great removing the unknown of the trail condition since everyday we passed through the area we would be working on. Our crew received experience axe bucking and crosscutting felled trees, while the Leaders of Color crew became certified!
We ran into Colorado Parks and Wildlife fish surveyors, as well as a @nationalparkservice project partner who might have just changed the course of my life career...
Unfortunately, beetle kill has left this area highly susceptible to deadfall. Snowpack is rapidly decreasing due to climate change and a constant warming trend.
It's places like this that make me fall more in love with this state...I hear next hitch is going to blow this out of the water (how that's possible is beyond me).

I love everything about this, Andrew! As the Director of SCC, my vantage into the field is limited these days. It brought me great joy to see your joy and exuberance for the corps experience. Well done!
This brought me so many different emotions missing my crew. You also remind me of my friend Nicholas who I was on a crew with and it made me miss him!! You're amazing!!!
Wow. I've worked for Arizona CC and Wisconsin CC. This video has brought me so much nostalgia and emotion. I love it. I've been transported back to rig up at the Tucson office, being out on the trail with crews in northern Wisconsin, and learning cross cut in Flagstaff. This is the kind of content that keeps me going in this field! Excellent work, Andrew.
This is edited so well! Love how you use the photos
Love this! Thanks for your work!
Thank you!
What camera do you use? Also did you edit the pictures or was it just camera settings?
I used all the cameras in the arsenal: GoPro Hero 8 Black/iPhone for video and a Fuji X100v for all of the photos/stills. I never color graded the video but I did use in-camera film simulations in the Fuji to give the photos a certain look.
What a fantastic window in the Conservation Corps experience! Bravo!
