Comment: Before you begin shorting the contacts to set zero the date indicator, you need to pull the crown out. It wasn’t said in the video and this little step cost me 45 minutes of my life. That being said, this is the only video I could find and I appreciate the effort!
Thank you so much!!! I’ve had this watch for over 20 years and love it so much. Fred Meyer Jewelers couldn’t fix it so they sent it to SEIKO and they wanted to charge me $300 to fix it so I just gave up and let it sit for years. Now thanks to you I have it back for free! You are the best❤
Excellent tutorial, thank you so much! I have a titanium 8F32 gifted to me by my father 30 years ago when I went to another country to study, and after the battery died, I had a hard time finding a shop that knows how to deal with the resetting of the calendar. After 20 some years, I finally changed the battery and reset the calendar all by myself following your video! I'm wearing it as I'm typing this and I'm really liking this watch all over again.
@@shagwellpinagpala3409 Yes I followed the video. Take note and stop the video at each step. I watched it all first, then at each step. I found it to be really helpfull. Don't rush and you should be ok. (and I used a jewellers loup to see the watch internals as my eyes are not great!). I've never done one before and all went well. Good luck!
Thank you so much. I was quoted £257 by H Samuel to reset non working watch. Bought battery from Amazon £6.00 followed instructions and 15 mins later all fixed, Thank you.
If Perpetual Calendar Settings are gone after resetting the second hand is jumping 5 sec at a time, not 4 sec. Watch your video :) This mistake is everywhere. Anyway, thank you for the detailed description! Like!
Thank you so much for this video. I purchased this watch for my dad as a Christmas Present years ago and he really likes it. When the battery died, my Mom was told that she would have to send the watch to Seiko to replace the battery ...$150 or about what the watch is worth. I took it to a watch specialist in Austin TX that would not do it citing "it is too complicated and easy to break". Using this video, my son and I were able to successfully replace the battery. I am so glad we were able to do this for my dad. Thank you again.
I just got mine from an IG auction last August, and the calendar was set to February, which made the watch show 1 on Aug 29. Thanks to your video I now can adjust the setting correctly instead of rotating the crown 56 full circles 😅😅😅
Thanks for the video! It gave me the confidence to buy one for a very good price on ebay. The previous owner couldn't figure out how to get it going again after changing the battery. I went through the steps and it works great now.
I realise that its a long time since you posted this Mark but this week I picked up a nice condition one of these Seikos on Ebay for not much money as it was described as none functional. I opened it expected to find a mashed up PCB but it was OK and the battery was clearly dead, replaced it and followed your instructions and now have a fully functional perpetual calendar - thanks!
Not sure if anyone will read this but thank you Mark for this video. Seiko couldn’t help and no repairers would touch it. This is my favourite watch given to my on my 30th by my wife 21 years ago and now it’s working again!! Thanks again Mark. 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video!I'm am now going to save me about $75 by changing the battery myself on one of my favorite timepieces that has been shelved for a couple years!great job with the instruction!
Thank you so much for your helpful tutorial video. Your clear instructions and step-by-step guidance made the process incredibly easy to follow. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into creating the video. Thanks to you, I was able to successfully change my watch battery without any hassle. Your generosity in sharing your knowledge is truly commendable. Once again, thank you Mark!
Only thing not mentioned is the removal of the isolation sticker from the Seiko battery and stick it on the new Panasonic CR2412. Do you have to do this or is there a battery that comes like that?
@@pherdegenDid you ever find out the answer to this? Got my first ever (old) 8F56 watch on the way and I'm already bricking it at the thought of battery changes
Unbelievable, thank you very much! This video helps and is useful no matter how many years go by! These watches keep coming back for battery swaps and this knowledge is the key!
Great instructions, didnt think i would ever get the watch working again after sitting dormant for years. I bit of rewinding and following the date set up and Back in the game! Thanks for this video 10 years on..
Very much appreciated! I have an 8F56 that I tried to change the battery on fifteen years ago (before TH-cam!). I failed at the first hurdle by not knowing the reset procedure, assumed I'd broken the watch and put it in a cupboard. Pulled it out a few days ago, discovered that the "new" battery I put in 15 years ago was now flat, bought another, followed these instructions and I have a lovely working watch! Because I hadn't used the watch in over a decade I completely failed to realise the three positions of the crown - folks, if the second hand is still moving when you pull the crown out then it's not out far enough. :)
My 8F56 Perpetual Calendar is now up and running thanks to you. At first could not get the calendar ring to zero out/to one because the winder ring was pushed back in accordance with your instructions for shorting out the a/c contact (approx. 4:15 in video; "...pull the winder fully out and push it back in"), and I did not notice you had pulled the winder fully out, approx. 4:35 in the video. Once I pulled the winder all the way out, was able to reset all settings, calendar, month, year and day. Thank you very much.
This was a lifesaver , an excellent video, followed each step and the watch worked once again. These are not an easy watch to put a new battery in unless you watch this video, thanks so much!
Many thanks for this brilliant video, I just followed the steps and my 8F32-0049 is chugging along for the first time in many years! Instead of 100UKP plus to send it away I have sent maybe 20UKP in watch tools and most of all had a lot of fun and learned something!
I've come back to this video 5 years later as had one that just didn't seem to want to setup. Followed step by step and all good. ****TOP TIP**** I put my watch over a mirror so I could see the date without flipping the watch and saved me a bit of trouble with setup.
I finally got it working with your help. Didn't have the sticker for the battery, so made my own out of paper. That stopped the watch. So I tried it without and eventually got it running. Now I feel like a genius ....😁
Awesome, crystal clear video Mark. One question - when setting the date is it the assumption that the hands are showing AM time? ie. If i set the date and the hands are at 11:00, but the actual time i need to set is 23:00, do i move the hands all the way clockwise?
Well, I just took the sticker off my original battery and put it on the new battery. My local shops wanted nothing to do with this watch so I did end up just doing it myself. Darn thing was $325 when I purchased it like 10 years ago so I am glad I got it working again. Thanks for the video, my watch is now working again.
Very informative i have a seiko divers SOLAR watch my wife bought me HOPEFULLY solar takes care of batteries for many years ,i do love seiko.my 1st automatic lasted me 28 years then needed cleaning it stopped one day so i bought another similar seiko which was NOT as reliable every day it needed adjusting even took it back to jewellers where they told me oh automatics are like that never accurate so my automatic is put away for now and I rely on my divers solar excellent for the past 2 years already..cheers great video.
Fantastic tutorial video - it is vital that you follow the instructions to the letter - literally !! As with other comments here, the key things to note are .... the crown needs to be pulled all the way out when resetting and setting the calendar. Also, the tiny "AC", "0", "Y", "M", "D" markings should be visibly stamped on the silver tabs near the yellow coloured contacts. My Seiko PC watch is the rarer white dial 8F32-0160 purchased in 2002 and all the markings are in exactly the same positions as shown in this video. Again as with other commentators on here, I too carefully peeled the plastic wrapping off the existing battery (Seiko) and put it on the new battery (Panasonic) and aligning arrows with winder. It has only ever had only 1 previous battery change and local watch repairer charged approx £35 GBP to do it - very happy DIY amateur watch enthusiast !
Fantastic video. I went out and purchased an 8F32-0210 because I saw this video first. The battery change and calendar setting would not have been possible without this guide. Thank you so much for putting out this content.
Thank you very much for your clear instructions. I managed to replace my battery and reset the calendar. I usually send this to Malaysia with my family to get reset as it's cheaper there. In the uk it would have cost over £50. It cost me £4 for the battery. Great. Thanks.
Been a watchmaker for over 45 years and studied in Switzerland, this is a very well done video. Have done this in the past many years ago but with age, have forgot many of the steps. I have a paper copy of the steps from Seiko but have renovated my shop this year and have not got all of it organized. Took a chance to see if anyone would have it on You Tube. Thank goodness Mark was right on with his excellent video. It is great to know that there are watchmakers who are willing to take the time from there busy day repairing to make excellent video’s like this. My customer took his watch to many places to have the battery replaced but no one would look at it. He came to our store, when other stores told him to bring to us for the job. With Mark’s help we have a happy customer. And that is what it is all about. Thanks again Mark and keep up the excellent work you give to us on You Tube. Cheers Canada Dan.
Another one fixed, thank you Mark! I changed out the battery on one I bought from Ebay and it still didn't work. I got frustrated after about 20 min of rechecking and trying everything again. I almost felt like throwing it it out since it's been a looong time since something similar has happened. I have a red transparent film covering the underside of the negative battery side and I decided to double check it. Of course it was misaligned and one of the metal prongs was being covered and not making a connection. Just realigned it, tried again and now I'm happy again! Thank you so much Mark, I've been a big fan for a long time!
Mark Thank you very much for this video and I have now solved it - the 8F32 watch which a registered watch repairers in Tring, England told me needed a complete overhaul at the cost of over £100 is now fully functional with a £5.50 Panasonic battery powering it, with the date correctly set! Your instructions worked fine once I followed them to the letter. I can now answer my own earlier question and that of others below reference the label. Only Seiko sell the 2412 with a label attached, and I was confronted with a watch returned with no battery, hence no label. I used an image of the battery with the label on, downloaded via Google images, which I scaled to the exact dimensions of the battery, and then printed a copy onto sticker paper, which I covered with plastic film, ensuring to place a hole in the correct place for the negative terminal to still make contact with the battery. I am so glad I persisted because I cannot afford to buy another perpetual calendar watch with an accuracy of ±20s pa - the original was a significant birthday present and is now nearly 14 years old. Please keep your channel going Mark, it is really helpful; and to all those out there in similar situations persist and do not throw good watches away without giving it a go. Amazingly with the right instructor even a ham-fisted amateur as myself can do a sight better than some so-called professionals who appear to give up unless their pockets are filled with copious amounts of sterling! M
Thanks for this video it’s excellent. Will this method work for an 8F35? I need to re-align the chapter ring on my sbcm023 and will most likely need to reset it.
Great stuff!! I sent mine off to a highly regarded watch repairer in Texas, and he did the servicde the first time. The next time I sent them (mine and my wife's) off for a battery replacement, he claimed that he couldn't do it due to the lack of parts and returned them. I seriously hope he didn't damage them. I'm going to order some batteries, and try this out for myself. I really don't have anything to lose at this point, as they have been sitting for 10 years with nothing done. The adventure begins!!
What a great instructional video this is. The original quote to replace the battery was £100 from the jeweller to send it to Seiko. I did get a local jeweller to refit a battery but the date was never reset and the second hand run on the 4 second sweep so it didn't get used that much. I recently dug the watch out from the back of a drawer and the battery had long since died a few years ago. A visit to the local repairers was unsuccessful and I was advised to get a new watch as they were sure it was too far gone to save. For the cost of a £5 lithium battery and following this excellent video I now have the watch running like new. May thanks Mark!
I just did it!!!!.. Although u made it look easy, It was difficult for me as a first timer.. But each step you provided was essential.. Thanks again, God bless you..
Thank you for the video! Around 2002, I took mine in for a battery replacement and was told that the motion had broken. I didn’t have the money to replace it, but I kept it thinking that I’d replace it one day. I saw this video and wondered if the folks who said the motion was broken, didn’t know how to reset the calendar? Sure enough, I replaced the battery, and followed the video and it worked perfectly. I’ll be giving it to my 24 y/o son shortly. Hope he’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Mahalo!
Wow, my daughter dropped off her watch for me to change the battery. I had no idea what I was getting into. this helped so much. Her little, let me stress little, seiko needed the battery replaced, and the resetting, but i could barely see things with a 20x magnifier. your video guided me to the proper little tiny tabs. all set, good to go. thanks a bunch.
Thank you for your instructional video. I was able to change the battery and adjust the perpetual calendar just fine after watching this. Kudos to you for a very thorough instructions on how to do this.
Thanks for the detailed video, it was a great help in resetting the perpetual calendar on a 8f32-00a0! But now I've got an 8f23-0400 that has a screw-down crown. I think there's an issue with the stem insertion. It only runs one second at a time when it's at the second position. It stops running when it's pushed in all the way in to the first position. Is there a case where the crown can be inserted incorrectly so it acts like it's in the first position when it's actually in the second position and stops running in the first position (maybe because of pressure on the movement)? It feels and acts normal when I release and reinstall the stem but acts the same.
You kind sir are a legend. Repair shop said my watch is scrap. After watching your most helpful and clear video, my watch is now working as it should and with the correct date. Absolutely spot on, thank you sir, stay well and all the best for you
This was great! I was able to get the old watch working again with the help of this video. I had paid upwards of $80 to get this watches battery replaced but could no longer justify it since you can get this watch for $50 on ebay. $3 battery and a little patience and it is back in business - thank you thank you thank you!
Excellent Tutorial! Very helpful. I couldn't find a local jeweler who knew how to replace my battery and reset the perpetual calendar! The only thing this instructional is missing is how to check that the settings are correct. To do this, pull crown out one position and push back in within one second. The second hand will move at 5-second intervals and stop the number of years since last leap year, then the calendar number will move to current month, and finally the calendar will move to current day.All set! Thank you!
Thanks for posting this! I just changed the battery in one of these and the procedure in the owner's manual (using crown settings) did not work. I thought we had received an old battery from Amazon (4 sec ticks). Later in the evening I ran across this video. Spot on.
I have the same watch, love it.....very heavy watch and when the battery dies I usually send it to Seiko repair in New Jersey for $150.00 for shipping and repair.....Great Video....always wondered.
excellent instructional video, it is magnificent and clear, following your instructions is achieved. I really appreciate this type of video today it is very difficult to find watch specialists and with this you help us solve many daily problems. greetings from the southern tip of America, Chile 🇨🇱 🌶 ... great jobs
Thanks for the awesome video. My wedding present from my wife 16 years ago works again after being down for a couple of years! Therefore, she is happy too. Thanks for making the replacement/reset so easy to follow!
great video. Unfortunately not working for me. Carefully removed the battery and replaced with a seiko replacement. Tried the reset by shorting AC and + with the crown full out but the second hand doesnt move. Ive checked the voltage on the new battery and its 3v as per. Any ideas? thanks!
Sweet! Got a titanium perpetual Seiko in a bin, gave up hope ever getting it to tun again, I hope I havn't damaged the circuit-board, have faint memory that I found instructions how to reset the calendar since the watch worked a short while after I replaced the battery. But now I'm keen to make a final try before giving up hope forever... Loved the watch, thought I'd have it for many years but it became a truly sad story after I broke the glass and sent in in for repair, major kudos to Seiko though as I recived a brand new watch after contacting them and told them the whole story with the incompetent watch store and thier repair center, never bought a watch again from that chain and tell all my friends to stay away from them!
Great instructional video! Thank you so much. Although you 'show' pulling the stem back out after the 4 second check, you didn't mention it and I nearly missed it. Thanks again.
This step by step is 100% on point. Excellent. Followed this to the letter and was able to get the watch running again. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much, worked exactly as instructed.

Thanks to your video I recovered Seiko watch that I inherited from dad ....... thank you very much my friend. Greetings from Chile
Mark
Thank you very much for this video and I have now solved it - the 8F32 watch which a registered watch repairers in Tring, England told me needed a complete overhaul at the cost of over £100 is now fully functional with a £5.50 Panasonic battery powering it, with the date correctly set!

Es un video fantástico.
Enhorabuena 👏
Llevaba dos días abriendo y cerrando el reloj de mi padre sin saber q le pasaba.
Muchas gracias
thank you .you do a brilliant job explaining very carefully and easy to follow.A life saver in my profession.
Absolutely spot on, thank you sir, stay well and all the best for you
It worked for mine as well... (The Seiko agents was struggling apparently - when I got it back it was running in 5s intervals - they had a new guy)
Thank you!
Omg , that's Seiko Indonesia , my country
Thanks for posting this! I just changed the battery in one of these and the procedure in the owner's manual (using crown settings) did not work. I thought we had received an old battery from Amazon (4 sec ticks). Later in the evening I ran across this video. Spot on.
I have the same watch, love it.....very heavy watch and when the battery dies I usually send it to Seiko repair in New Jersey for $150.00 for shipping and repair.....Great Video....always wondered.
Brillliant Video, have just reset my favorite 16 year old Seiko. Worked first time. many thanks
thank you so much... now i can start fixing my perpectual calendar watch...
you are very welcome :)
Why have 63 things... disliked this very helpful vid?? What is wrong with people!!!
excellent instructional video, it is magnificent and clear, following your instructions is achieved.
