As a retired designer I just love moving my furniture around and from room to room. I love shopping my own home. I just enjoy making rooms look different. It’s not because I am not satisfied with how it looks. I just love change.
I so agree that you can't underestimate the psychological attachments/aversions we have to some pieces. Like you said, it's YOUR house, and you should be happy in it. It's taken me years to finally admit to myself that I don't like some pieces I have, as they remind me of someone, or a time in my life, etc. It is really freeing to let go and move on to a happier life for me and my family. Thanks for mentioning it.
Clutter is very popular, but decluttering it all is what's unpopular! Lol. We just need to train our kids better. If they are not reminded, they will forget where to put it up! I enjoy decluttering now but sometimes i want to keep it all but i realized when i look at it that my home will look very chaotic, and i can not find stuff when i need it.
That feeling you get when a room or a space comes together and feels "right." You just know when it happens. And that is one of the things I've struggled with over the years - finding what makes me happy. Takes time.
I recently went through every single cupboard in my home and donated/ dumped sack full after sack full, it's so great knowing what we have and where it is now. My house still stresses me out though as everything apart from the bathroom needs doing, the walls, the woodwork, the floors, the doors etc etc but the cost means we can't do it. Every time I clean the house I get depressed as I see what needs doing. Houses really do hold you back from living your life sometimes x
Oh I know this feeling over the years. Not only the cost but the time and energy it takes while living your family life. The real problem then becomes the overwhelming feeling and getting stuck and doing nothing. I found that if I broke it down to one small project at a time - let’s say one wall- new paint -figure out what color, save up money for paint, then find a day to concentrate on that one wall, slap up first coat, clean the kitchen while it dries , then slap up the next coat( I d recommend Benjamin’s Moore paint-maybe a bit more money but it will last. The quality is top notch and goes on like a dream-all I can think of when mixing it is the ultimate milkshake!) Wall done! What’s next that is possible? Finding a small table for the wall?…Go to thrift stores or redo one you have or save up for one you found in a store…carry on project by project. You’ll never get bored! It all takes time but as we all know time is there to take advantage of…and don’t forget to rest (when needed) and watch House of Valentina while the paint dries!
A thought I constantly feel, "I've cleaned the kitchen till it sparkles, and it is still an old, inpractical kitchen, ugh!" I know exactly how you feel.
@barbwire1304 Great advice, you are right, it's been so overwhelming that I'm subconsciously stalling! I've had a couple of bits of electrical work done so I guess that's a start 🙂
My friend had same issue in her own home, she ended up doing cheaper cosmetics fixes like painting & laminate flooring etc. She said it's not perfect but allows her to live a bit less stressed for the time being 😅
I move my furniture around constantly!! It’s a free way to get a new look. I’m always rearranging and taking things from other rooms, moving them to other rooms. It also sparks creativity and puts me in a good mood.
I like lots of color in the kitchen and bathrooms so I wake up and stay motivated. Bedroom and wherever I unwind should be calm colors or neutrals, but I do have some color in the bedroom so that I can look over to that area in the morning when I'm starting to motivate to start the day (pops of red or green), but can focus more on the subdued areas at night when readying to sleep. You can also have pillows on the sofa that are bright on one side, subdued on the other so when you entertain, you can just flip them and energize the space.
As far as moving your furniture around so many times, you have a very patient husband. Keep him ! I also love moving my rooms around and changing it up. I did it while my husband was at work. He never knew what he was coming home to. LoL
Home is a reflection of ourselves. If your mind is busy or your life is chaotic, it will show in your home from messiness all the way to having a lot going on as far as decor. I definitely go with phases with my home decor & they tent to go very aligning with what’s going on in my life. Are you guys feel the same or is just me? 😅❤️

What an excellent video. Very helpful information for all of us. The one point of disagreement I have is your take on color. Color is not the problem. The problem is knowing how to use color and this requires skill and knowing and utilizing color theory. You always use the most gaudy examples of color in your snapshots to illustrate your point. One of my favorite designers is Sarah Richardson. You only have to look at any of her work to see the proper use of color and pattern. You have a gorgeous gorgeous home. So well appointed and designed. I respect and admire it. I could not live in it. I feel like you feel in an elegant high end hotel. Amazing but I wouldn't want to live there. Please please don't take this as a criticism but rather as an exposition of our different taste. I say again your home is gorgeous and supports and nourishes your family. It is home. As for me, I need color. I'm an artist and what people like best about what I make is my use of color. In my home I use a tight color palette of soft greens, blues, and ivory which of course is very pale yellow. Not pastels but soft calming enveloping color. Everyone who comes to my home remarks on how beautiful calming and uplifting my use of color is in my home. Color is tricky but through years of study and lots of trial and error I feel confident in my use of it. I understand you have a different experience and have found your skill and confidence in a different way. And it is beautiful. I just think you can make your point of view by using less extreme and garish photos of the use of color. Color is not the problem. ❤
I agree . How to use the color is the key. I have at least 6 different interior colors but they are used in such a way , a flow , from room to room that it makes sense . Light sand tile flooring ties it all together. I am told how calming it is to be here .
Yes Yes THIS! Thank you so much. 🙏🏻 I adore Sarah Richardson. I also love Kelly Wearstler, she got her start talking about color. I’m just not neutral. It doesn’t feel original, although Valentina is exceptional! I do love black & moody too. There’s room for all of us Creative Weirdos. ( hello Mr. Kate). 😁🦄🪴💐🌈
I like some color. I live in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and I love the warm colors of sage green, golden yellow and orange in my decor . Great video.
Awesome! I lived with a hoarder and can’t wait to have decluttered spaces in my future home. Cupboards stress me out if I have to move stuff on a shelf to get to what I want so I’m going to have as many drawers as possible. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of stuff that makes me sad or stressed and brought in happy things. I got a new bed and linens after separating and that’s a game changer. V has inspired me with the neutral colour scheme and I’m building my capsule decor with it. I’ve created my own black and white photography art work and a few colour pieces as my ex didn’t want art up even though it makes my soul sing. I’m placing top priority on V’s squeal of delight philosophy when entering each room.
That’s awesome. I’m right there with you. After my divorce I am redoing everything. Even if it’s just the decor and clearing out stuff I did do some painting and redid my steps. Added hardware to my cabinets trying to make it mine and it feels great. Best of luck to you my friend.

I noticed that I tend to go through phases w/ my decor. I love H&M Home. They have a great selection seasonally of throw pillow covers at great inexpensive prices for this retiree on a pretty strict fixed budget. Their pillow covers allow me to swap out the feeling in my living room and bedroom during the various seasons at a low cost, along with clipping free art off the internet and printing it to rotate seasonal art during the holidays, spring, summer, fall and winter. H&M Home also has good prices on various decorative accessories.
As usual totally right. We've just moved to Devon to much smaller house and we decluttered it was so cathartic. We really didn't need all this stuff. Thank you Valentina spot on. Love to Jack. Keep them coming. Love from Rosie O from Devon England 🇬🇧👍😊❤️
When I go into someone's home and it's cluttered, and even sometimes visually unclean, it stresses me out. But, It must be their choice. Thanks for the visuals. Happy spring cleaning.
This is a great video! We are finishing up building our forever home in Franklin Tennessee and I am so torn on what I want for design and I am so afraid to make a mistake. Your videos have given me guidance and great ideas. I love your humor and I love your laughter, thank you for sharing your life and your love for design with all of us!❤
I love how you are always moving things around. I myself place something and it stays there forever because that's where it looked best. My next goal is to redo my living room with neutral furniture and change the accessories with the seasons. But I'll bet they will remain in pretty much the same place. 😘 I will continue to work on change!
Video title could also be:”Does your home/decor stress you out?” I think you hit many great points, but especially on keeping things that family has given you that you don’t really like. Some of these things have a measure of comfort to them, but we don’t have to keep them ALL. No matter our design taste (I like a pared down English vibe…that is my comfort jamb) we should love the feeling of our home and the positive energy it gives us to live our better lives. Great video!!!👍🏻
Definite yes on your first topic - clutter and stress. I am continuing to downsize following the move from a house to a 2 bdrm, 2 bdrm apartment. There is definitely a decor market for people downsizing!
I don’t like clutter either V, Thanks to all your recommendations I’ve turned my home into something I’m Proud of, leaving behind the Hamptons look and going for more neutral tones that make all the difference, I was never into different coloured walls, like feature walls of bright colours, that was never my thing, I’m searching for a nice wingback chair to put in my makeup space with a lovely throw rug and pillow but I’m yet to find one I like, I don’t just settle on the first thing I see anymore, I’ve just redone our bedroom in neutral tones and it looks lovely, I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and tips with us, I appreciate it very much. Cheers from Nellie from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 💖💖💙💙💙😉
I have a request that other people may have trouble with like I did. The tone of the light bulbs used in the home. I like mine to be on the warm side except in the bathroom where I like them to be more of a clear natural tone. I've gone to homes where you know and see they've taken great care in designing a beautiful home but the tone of the lighting is horrific. Could you do a session on that subject? Thank you so much for your videos I look forward and enjoy each one.
I just have to put my two cents in here about color. I've been using blues qnd greens in my homes for thirty years, those are my neutrals, I dont think black/white, beige are the only neutrals. I prefer to have people chose base colors that they with be happy with over time. I've been wearing blues and greens in my wardrobe as well, just as a capsule wardrobe. So I agree to stick with base colors but they need to fit each individual.
My big stresser is that our family room and kitchen are open concept and when I’m relaxing I see all my dirty dishes and clutter on the counter. I’m going to try to rearrange the family room with the back of the sofa facing the kitchen. That way, if I don’t want to do the dishes right away and need to relax, I don’t have to look at them!!!
You have inspired me!! Brought out my creative side again. After m🎉y dad passed in end of '21, I decided to change almost everything!! It was almost 13yrs; so it was definitely time!!
I just adore your channel! I love your playful energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour. You are so fun to watch on screen and whenever I see an upload from you I click SO fast! It’s so true what you said about keeping work space and home space separate. It’s tricky for me cause my husband and I live in a 2bdr condo. Our spare room is tiny and we are both animators so we have these two HUGE desks to hold our monitors AND drawing tablets. So, we are forced to work in our dining space but because of your channel and a few other talented interior design TH-camrs, I know exactly how I will configure the space to work for our lifestyle and still keep it uncluttered! Keep up the amazing work!! I look forward to watching your future videos :)
Excellent point about inherited or gifted objects and furniture!!!! I’m going to try and take this lens with me through my home and donate those items that are causing me underlying stress. Great point!!❤
I’m so inspired by your videos! When I feel I need to do some changes at home I watch one of your videos and that gets me started 😃👍🏼 Thank you Valentina for spreading your positivity, energy och knowledge 😃💕 Lots of love from Sweden
Valentina - So real, authentic, genuine and just brilliant! So grateful for all that you share - you’ve given me such a helpful foundation to balance my need and love for design, how I execute my vision, while also being realistic about how my children and husband can actually live AND function in that space at the same time 🤪🤗♥️ I’ve learned to take a really hard look at what I like vs what my mother put on me to adopt (heirloom pieces she loved). I’m working through the guilt that goes along with that but in a far more positive and brighter outlook. Finding and respecting my style vs feeling obligated to make my mother’s style work in my home when it doesn’t work for my family. I’ve come a long way! I have so much more confidence in what I select for our space. Three years ago I selected SW Iron Ore, using BM Aura flat and everyone, including the painters thought I was crazy. Everyone tried to talk me out of it. Seeing how beautifully you work your style into your family home helped give me the confidence to trust my gut. Neighborhood envy and the painters ended up loving how it came out. It’s beautiful. I am grateful to have found you. ♥️ Thank you Valentina
Hi Valentina, You have definitely raised some relevant points. It's definitely an individual feel and how they are comfortable with themselves. Personally, l'm not into clutter. Living in clutter, to me, is a sign of a confused mind.
The mattress. LET. ME. TELL. YOU!!! I bought a new mattress a couple years ago at a mattress store and spent a pretty penny on it. To this day it doesn’t even look like I sleep on it and I sleep on the same side of the bed nearly every night. And it’s made my nights far more comfortable and I’ve never had pains or discomfort in that mattress. I’ve never owned a good quality mattress of my own sooooooo I’ve been transformed when it comes to mattresses lol get a good mattress if you’re able!
Cannot agree with you enough! I’m literally going through that stress of having unwanted furniture in my living room. I don’t want to see them anymore and my husband is attached to the Ethan Allen furniture that we got 20 years ago! Can you feel my anxiety level? Haha finally getting rid of them slowly ordered stuff from cb2. Yes! Great topic next is painting the fire place black eeee!!!!!! Help!❤❤❤
I've moved as many times as you and I've also had many colourful decor styles. But now I hope to stay where I am and I have settled on soft beige tones which I find so soothing. It's a perfect background for easy seasonal changes.
I love your house but I need more color. I’m renting right now after loosing my home to a fire, and I can’t wait to move out because not being able to inject my favorite colors into this place is driving crazy!
I got the Marlow pillows after seeing you describe them a while back. I love them! And I have a pile in the linen closet I don’t like. I’m very picky. They’re great! ❤
Valentina I appreciate what you do. Your home decor style is one that brings me peace. It’s timeless. I’m a huge believer in less is more. I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned curvy sofas. Do you recommend it?
Same question. I want to retire next year. I will be here and another 10 years. There’s only one bathtub do I replace it with a shower because that’s all I take? I have a half bath downstairs which is just the toilet and sink.
While I do understand the benefit of total darkness when we sleep, I think the blackout curtains would actually stress me out. It's like I always need to know there's still a world out there. But keeping things you don't like because someone gave it to you? Totally! It's like, "Love you, don't love your design aesthetic. "😄 I admire people who can just say, "Thank you so much but this really doesn't work with my style".
I really enjoy watching you. Color is very personal as you said. Your house is beautiful. Funny how my brain thinks black and grey are depressing. Living in the southwest, warmer colors seem to be less jolting.
You got this. Little by little it didn’t happen overnight. Just watch videos on it. I have gotten rid of a ton but it doesn’t look like I’ve gotten rid of anything. But I know I’m making progress.
I’m surprised Marlow pillow zippers are green, because you could see the green through light colored cases and assuming even if you have pillow cover below cases. I’ll go to their site to see if white zippers are an option. Love your videos. Thanks
I like neutral color home because it is a nice backdrop for things like kids toys, cloths, books which are likely brightly colored. A colored room is great for restaurant or store front. But for a home, it might clash with a lot of the daily stuff.
Yes, I agree our surroundings definitely affect our mood and productivity. I feel extremely stressed and exhausted in a clutteted and/or messy space. I also need a lot of light. I do have some black furniture, which I find quite elegant, but that is lightened up by glas, silver (teaset, candle holders, and the like) and by cream colored curtains and decor. I also can't work with my desk facing a wall. I need to have a wide open space in front of me to be able to think and be creative. I once insisted on moving a desk in my office at work even though the workpsychologist insisted that the resulting light situation would harm my eyes when working for long time on my computer. I didn't care; I cared more about my mental state.
My husband and children are always laughing at how I'm always changing the furniture around. But don't you also find that seasonal changes require furniture and decor repositioning and changes?
Thank you for another informative video, Valentina! The pillow looks like one to try, but I have a question. If both zippers are undone on the pillow, does a pillowcase bunch it up, thereby taking away the effect of having it unzipped? I have that problem with my pillows. Any source for wide pillowcases?
Systems are great because they can lead to habits, and habits can become so automatic that they're not even noticed. And too much stuff can vary depending on how big your place is and your storage options. I live in a small older place, and clutter can be a real battle because there just isn't a properly sized, logical, place to store certain odd-sized things.
Can you do OUTDOOR spaces? I’m struggling with a heat-exposed rooftop with white stucco, grey concrete, steel everywhere (including a LOT of A/C vents) Our outdoor furniture is wood & rattan, with two different parasols in cream & beige…
Open concept stresses me out.. even when I lived alone!!! 😂 I literally could feel my blood pressure rise when I knew food/cooking smells were reaching my rather expensive (for me) sofa, chairs, rugs, throws, pillows, whatever! I'd give several internal organs to live in a nice size older home with actual rooms where tgere is privacy, a closed off kitchen, maybe a large closed off pantry with enough room for food and all my appliances, etc.. Air and open space provides no area for hiding all of that. Many open concept homes or condos aren't as large as Valentina and Jack's home so many DON'T have a separate pantry room or enough built-in cabinets or even anywhere to add a large cabinet. I lived in an open layout type condo once and there was absolutely NOWHERE to store small appliances, or no laundry room - just my washer and dryer behind two doors in tge kitchen, so laundry supplies had to sit on my kitchen counter! Ugh! Seriously. These builders in the last 20 years or so are just retarded and I don't care if that's mean! Its like, what are they thinking???? Where do they expect people to put necessities??? Again, if the home IS large enough, yes, there will be an extra room/pantry with tons of storage space, or at least wall space where one could add a large storge cabinet/buffet/armoire type item to hide everything, but in smaller homes and condos, builders don't do that. Just off the top of my head - Give me a good size old home like, say, George Bailey's parent's home in "Its a Wonderful Life", and I'd love it!
I love your videos. You have such great suggestions.Well acutally you are very talented. Right nowI am so stressed with my living room. We bought this house two years ago thinking that we would remove the grey stone walls in the cobination living room, dinning room . Its a beautiful home except for that. Well I got really sick and have been in and out of hospital many many times. I hate the stone walls. Plus on top of it I made a hurried decision and bought the wrong color sofa at Pottery Barn. The color of the sofa looks nothing like the small sample I picked the color from. I don't know what to do. We cant afford to re-purchase the sofa. And what can I do with the stone walls? Any suggestions Valentina?
I had several things that, belonged to my Mom. I finally said, I think these pieces are nice some even beautiful But, they are not my style. They were things my mother really liked so, let me donate them and let someone love them like my Mom did. After all a lot of those things were bought from an Antique store so, they originally belonged to someone else before my Mom 🤣
The hubs HAS an office. Does he use it??? Oh nooooooo…. He prefers to set up the computer on the bar in the kitchen/great room. When all the kids were home (8 of them) he could concentrate and work amid total chaos. Takes all kinds!!! 😂😂

Great video and these are the ones I’d love to see more of. More advice and less selling. Thank you for your time.
Always helpful. The gospel truth in a fun way. Thank you Valentina.
I love your humor and I love your laughter, thank you for sharing your life and your love for design with all of us!❤
Yes! This was exciting to see the thought process! Would love to see more videos like this 🎉
I love your videos and your energy! And yes clutter makes me stressed! Thank you for everything!
You bring me such Joy, the insperation is much appreciated!
I love grey, brown & indigo with plants & wood.
If I want colour, I can add one with a pillow, Art or glassware…
I have a request that other people may have trouble with like I did. The tone of the light bulbs used in the home. I like mine to be on the warm side except in the bathroom where I like them to be more of a clear natural tone. I've gone to homes where you know and see they've taken great care in designing a beautiful home but the tone of the lighting is horrific. Could you do a session on that subject? Thank you so much for your videos I look forward and enjoy each one.
Good Sunday afternon Valentina. Great video. Your home decorating skills are absolutely impeccable - particularly your choice of colors. . 😍🌼
One of the biggest stressors in the home is actually finding time to deal with stuff .... so a system is really a savior
Most valuable episode to date. I feel understood! Thank you
My big stresser is that our family room and kitchen are open concept and when I’m relaxing I see all my dirty dishes and clutter on the counter.
I completly agree with all of these. It has taken me 2 yrs to decorate my house. Its been a journey, testing out on what feels right. Making it cozy.
I hope you are going so, so well. Sending lots of love from Virginia❤
I love the lamp on the console/sofa table in the video.
I really just love your channels so much, have watched almost all your videos, thank you for being so wonderful 😊
I’m so inspired by your videos! When I feel I need to do some changes at home I watch one of your videos and that gets me started 😃👍🏼 Thank you Valentina for spreading your positivity, energy och knowledge 😃💕 Lots of love from Sweden
Valentina, I felt the tough love but I’m ready to start moving forward. Thank you ❤
I really agree with have a separate work space.❤. Use to have mine in the family room - never got anything done!
Bought the pharmacy lamp and I’m so glad I did. Had have the electrics changed to Australian voltage. Thank you! I’d like the mushroom lights next.
That's so exciting!!
Hi Valentina,
You have definitely raised some relevant points.
It's definitely an individual feel and how they are comfortable with themselves.
Personally, l'm not into clutter. Living in clutter, to me, is a sign of a confused mind.
Always love your advice, thank you so very much.💯
The mattress. LET. ME. TELL.
I loved this... Especially the moving part and trying to love your new home as much as you loved your previous one. UGH! Tears! YES!!!!
Help!❤❤❤
I organize too. I organize everything in the same desk drawer 😅
I love gray. Bathroom is where I have it most and a beautiful wall paper in an accent wall in our bedroom. Mostly is beige.
Thank you. Great Vid. Everything you said, I can relate to. Sometimes you can’t put your finger on why you feel a certain way in rooms in your house.
Great advice! Thank you!
I've moved as many times as you and I've also had many colourful decor styles. But now I hope to stay where I am and I have settled on soft beige tones which I find so soothing. It's a perfect background for easy seasonal changes.
Agree. Fung Shui doesn't reccomend working in your bedroom or having a TV in it.
I love your house but I need more color. I’m renting right now after loosing my home to a fire, and I can’t wait to move out because not being able to inject my favorite colors into this place is driving crazy!
Heartfelt and to the point.
I would love to know your take on shower curtains…what would be your taste if you had a tub/shower combo without glass doors. Thanks in advance!
I enjoy your videos but this one is a great help thanks
Thanks again for the informative video. I very much agree with each of your points.👌👍
I really enjoy watching you. Color is very personal as you said. Your house is beautiful. Funny how my brain thinks black and grey are depressing. Living in the southwest, warmer colors seem to be less jolting.
I loved this video!! Thank you from a stressed homeowner ❤
I have so much clutter in my house. I hope this video is inspirational Jerri from Ma.
You got this. Little by little it didn’t happen overnight. Just watch videos on it. I have gotten rid of a ton but it doesn’t look like I’ve gotten rid of anything. But I know I’m making progress.
Loving your inspiration
The color subject is true. For example, the color yellow can cause anxiety in certain individuals.
Can you do a video how you planted and care for your beautiful fiddle leaf room
😊 all true for me
My husband and children are always laughing at how I'm always changing the furniture around. But don't you also find that seasonal changes require furniture and decor repositioning and changes?
Love your blazer❤❤
I agree 💯
I want to add greenery to my interiors like your trees. I need to find out first the lighting ? What do you think Valentina ? Thank you in advance ❤
Great Video Valentina! The curtain link takes you to Pottery Barn Mattress's.
Can you do OUTDOOR spaces?
I’m struggling with a heat-exposed rooftop with white stucco, grey concrete, steel everywhere (including a LOT of A/C vents)
Our outdoor furniture is wood & rattan, with two different parasols in cream & beige…
Great information’
I hate clutter! I need my home organized and clean, even though I hate cleaning!!
❤the pillows look nice. Do they contain PFAS?
The hubs HAS an office. Does he use it??? Oh nooooooo…. He prefers to set up the computer on the bar in the kitchen/great room. When all the kids were home (8 of them) he could concentrate and work amid total chaos. Takes all kinds!!! 😂😂
Where is Louis? 🐾 Love your videos, but miss him interrupting 😊x
