How No Time To Die references ALL Bond movies

  • No Time To Die referenced ALL Bond films before it in some shape or form. Some of these references are very intentional and obvious, others are more farefetched and likely unintentional. In any case, I took the time to compile a list of references and go through them in chronological movie order!
Credits and permission for a lot of these references goes to Pentex Productions and his video covering this topic:

Great video as always Jeroen, thanks for reaching out about it. It's great to see them outlined in chronological order like this, and it's also excellent to have an 'update' of my video out there picking up on some of the errors and oversights in mine (like the Dr. No ceiling!) I've added a link to this in the pinned comment of my original video for people looking for more info.

      * Bond dies at the end in a massive explosion.
      * A Female 007.

      * Dr. Noah intends on spreading a global virus.

I noticed another easter egg, which is either intentional, or a coincidence. When Safin visits Madeleine in her office, he points out the Foxglove flowers, and how eating one can make your heart stop. The scientific name for Foxglove, is Digitalis - in Casino Royale, Bond is poisoned with Digitalis, and his heart stops!

In 1999's The World is Not Enough, Desmond Llewelyn's final bit of advice to Bond before he retired from the role of Q was "Never let them see you bleed, and always have an escape route." Bond broke both of these rules in No Time to Die and it ended up costing him his life.

Wasn't expecting a video like this. Guess you could thank me for suggesting that references video last year before making the NTTD review. 😉
Anyway, a few references I noticed, albeit the first two from the novels:
    1. Bond being poisoned in the climax reminds me of the climax of From Russia with Love. Whereas the movie had James not get poisoned, the novel he's not so lucky to say the least.
    2. James having a child is reminiscent of him and Kissy having a son named James Suzuki in the You Only Live Twice novel.
    3. A painting of Judi Dench's M shown in the scenes references a painting of Bernald Lee's M in The World Is Not Enough. Robert Brown's M is also present via a painting as well.

I really enjoyed NTTD and the Craig era overall, but watching this video made me realise I only ever saw NTTD once. I went in spoiler free, so it only occurred to me how what was going to happen to Bond about fifteen minutes before the end of the film, and it caught me off guard. I don't have any problems with it as it wraps up Craig's time as Bond very neatly and I thought it was a brave decision by the director. I don't know if that ending has influenced me to not rewatch the film (yet) or not, but watching this video has piqued my interest in seeing it again.

I think what the analysis actually shows is that they are just plain out of ideas for Bond and just rehashed old references into a 'new' plot. Bond could just step out of the shower having dreamed all of the Craig films, or Bond could restart as someone else. But the producers are aging, they have been well rewarded but are at their core still artists. The promise of Bonds return could just be a hoax; the final twist in the tale.

Elements of "You Only Live Twice" are used here and are set in Japan, end part of the title sequence has a red circle, Japan is known as 'The Land of The Rising Sun': Cary Joji Fukunaga who directed No Time To Die has Japanese Heritage.
Towards the end of the 'Spy', the main villain Stromberg states that 007 is in love with someone known to both of them, Safin does the same - both scenes are set in the HQ of the bad guys.
007 fights Primo/Cyclops at a stairwell - with the latter being killed by a transmission device - he does the same when attacked by terrorist chief Steven Obanno in Casino Royale, albeit Obanno is strangled.
Alec Trevelyan, Viktor Zokas/Renard, Raoul Silva/Tiago Rodriguez and Elliott Carver - like any number of main enemies - get killed by 007 himself.
Noteworthy mention goes to Milton Krest, in the guise of a marine biologist for research, it's merely a front to smuggle/process contraband along with laundering illicit cash for Franz Sanchez, the main villain: whereas Safin - once a scientist - was an assassin for SPECTRE, using his knowledge for dangerous purposes.
Like Goldfinger, Octopussy, Live And Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day, Licence To Kill, GoldenEye, Moonraker and The Living Daylights: feature 007 killing both the main villain and top henchman, the same applies to NTTD.
If there's anymore references, please reply, no doubt, I've probably missed a lot of them, many thanks.

I though it was a terrible movie that put the series on self-destruction by killing off Blofeld(for at least the third time), Spectre, Felix Leiter, and even worse, James Bond himself. The only way that James Bond can come back now is if he is Kenny from South Park where nothing matters in the series. Daniel Craig wanted to see a young 20 something Bond as a prequel to series, but I don't know if the series can survive the damage done by No Time To Die. James Bond needs to be a an immortal character. No Time To Die was a huge mistake and makes it difficult to come back from the problems in the story it created.

In Dr No when we first see the three blind mice walking in town they walk through a town square that had a circular road in the middle of it. The shot is looking down from above so you see the whole view of the street. In NTTD we see Bond driving into town and it’s a whole driving sequence that ends with bond going through a town square with a circular road (where Bond and Felix almost crash into each other). I am wondering if this is the same location from Dr No….
It’s presumedly Kingston, Jamaica in both locations.

Another reference between AVTAK and NTTD is that these are the only two movies where Bond is seen cooking/making food for someone. In AVTAK he bakes a quiche for Stacey and in NTTD, he cuts some apple slices for his daughter.

It just shows that No Time to Die was a love letter to the film series as well as the fans.

Well it’s John Barry’s music used at the start of the film Lou Armstrong song at the end of the film just to be picky have to say your very observant I did not notice half of these

I do love the easter eggs and huge love letter to Bond fans but I sometimes feel like covering the things everyone will love hides a film many may not enjoy.
Not saying it's a bad film at all but when I get passed the references and cool action sequences I'm not very impressed with this Bond film like I am with others.
It's quite a downer way to say goodbye to Craig but I guess that's how he wanted it

MWTGG: Bond girl knocks baddy into water tank that kills him. NTTD: Naomi knocks baddy into water tank...
Also, both movies' climaxes centered on protective doors opening/closing which led to the lair's destruction.

The James Bond series has changed in nature since Daniel Craig. That's not what being a spy is, as I understand it. They always try their best regardless of the overall situation. The previous James Bond series had plots to solve problems one by one, not Daniel. Craig's exaggerated blow fell from the sky, destroying the entire city and achieving his goal! Of course audiences just want to see the scenes, so the production company can sell tickets, but it goes against the plot of the MI6 007 series and turns it into an American style hero movie, but after all, it is American-funded to make a British film Movie.

anyone else here besides myself think that skyfall and spectre (and maybe a few parts in casino royale) did something similar to no time to die and die another day with the references, homages, tributes and callbacks

Nice video mate. Fitting tribute to some brilliant films! I know you’ve mentioned the gun barrel without blood, but did you notice that there is a scene in N.T.T.D where Craig is standing at the end of a corridor with round walls? It just made me think it was a mild reference to the barrel..Would you agree?

Now that I think about it, Saffin has an uncanny resemblance to Dr. No. Maybe they planned for them to be the same person. That would be very hard hitting and have Bond’s character come full circle, seeing him face off against his first ever foe.

As all the previous villains nearly succeeded with their plans, maybe the current villain just took all the good parts of previous attempts and combined them into one dastardly plan and its just a coincidence that they were caught on film.....just a working theory

@DutchBondFan perhaps you should do a video for Skyfall never pointing out the apparent references in that movie such as Bomd stepping on the Komodo dragon to get out the pit is a direct nod to Live and Let Die with the Alligators, and the palm signature Walther PPK was a clear reference to the palm print reader rifle in Licence to Kill.
    Another great video either way.

I thought the "I've had 3 weeks training" Line was supposed to be in reference to Rosey being a newish agent as well.
Paloma not getting the code word setup when she meets Bond was like Jack Wade when he dismissed needing to use "secret codes and your passwords".

If the writers tried to invent a new story and not reference every past film they may have produced a better film. All this DB5 stuff and anniversary crap is tedious now. Let's have a mad villain with a huge nuclear missile inside a pyramid. Fun Bond Again and new ideas.

i gave up on this after from russia with love - your only "reference" is that a bond girl returns from a previous movie. seriously? you might as well say "this movie clearly references this other bond movie where bond orders a martini shaken not stirred." "this movie *obviously* references this other bond movie where bond has a fist fight." please.
