SMSL SD9 Review - I don't know about this one.

- The SMSL SD9 is an interesting piece of hardware. It's a media player that kind of handles online streaming, but is better suited to handle your own local or network files. It played my MP3, FLAC, WAV, and DSD files flawlessly when connected directly to the device. But the wireless online streaming was troublesome at best. Frustrating and irritating at worse.
I'd rather go with a Cambridge Audio MXN10 ( amzn.to/4dt3jtv ) for an extra $100 and have ROON, Tidal Connect and Spotify Connect options... Oh and a DAC!
Another option would be a Wiim Pro ( amzn.to/3yegw9C ) with iFi power supply ( amzn.to/4bnFMZL ) and move the savings over to the DAC budget.
But if SMSL adds these features to a future SD10, I'd be all in on that for sure. The I2S output is CLEAN!

Hello Rick.
Very nice serious Review.
Thought this Unit would become a good Companion for my SMSL D-300 DAC.
But the use of this "Streamer" would make my Setup more complicated and unconvinient.
So i have to look for alternative Stuff.
It´s realy "funny" that a Company like SMSL cant see whats going on at the Market.
Puttin everythin that passible in the Case. Usefull or not. Crazy.
Lol. Yeah, but hopefully they'll listen to the market. I really do like what the SD9 does to the sound though. So much so that I'm going to upgrade my Cambridge Streamer with a DDC and IIS Out on HDMI. For sure more expense but then I'll hopefully have the best of both worlds. I'll post a video when I end up doing that. Still collecting the parts. And thanks for watching. I appreciate it 👍
Have you ever compared this streamer to the IFI zen streamer?
Hey Junior, No I haven't had an iFi Zen Streamer to compare. I do hope to try one in the future.
Bra try xduoo MT604.. kinda interestin'.. Peace!
Ok, I'll get ahold of one and see what it's about. Thanks for the recommendation. And thanks for watching.
Kewl!
This unit is glitchy as you said. Sound using just thumb drives is fine.
I've tried to stream through my android phone using Bluetooth and streaming various TH-cam music.
WHEN it connects, it sounds fabulous. BUT lately it just simply won't connect. My phone won't connect to the SD9, even though it "sees" the SD9. So it's hit or miss. I suppose I have to use ethernet but my modem is far from the unit, so not practical!
So your review is correct, it is glitchy and not with the features of a modern music streamer/server.
Hey John. Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it's a shame, but hopefully they'll get the bugs out in the next model and add better network streaming capabilities , because it does Sound great. Thanks for watching as well 👍
@@RickRuizAudio Thanks. Postscript: after trying everything, I finally in desperation was turning off and on various functions: DLNA, etc Finally I disabled Hilbylink and voila! Suddenly the phone connected and I could stream on Bluetooth again.
Streaming in 96kh really does sound exceptionally good so most likely I will just keep this one so long as it works but maybe upgrade some day.
