Testing the Breville "The Quick Cook Induction Cooker" (LIC400BLK)

  • So today I got a new KitchenAid 25cm "Tri-Ply" frypan, and Breville 2100W portable induction cooker. Mostly for omelettes and sauces, respectively. Sorry for the camera wobble.
    I thought I'd make this quick video to review the induction cooker more than the frypan. I might do more of these, not sure yet. I also busted out my 9 year old (turns out I purchased it in Feb 2010!) Arcosteel Retreat 16cm saucepan. Needless to say, I'm pretty disappointed. It makes a strange noise, the induction element is small and off-centre, it doesn't seem to go below 600W, and all of it's non-2100W settings are an on/off pulse.
    America's Test Kitchen video mentioned: • Gear Heads | The Best ...
    KitchenAid frypan: www.kitchenaid...
    Breville garbocooker: www.breville.c...
    Arcosteel retreat set I have: www.graysonlin... (discontinued)
    Next I think I'll try www.harveynorm...

    That was a brilliant method to visualize the hot spot from the cooktop. Much less messy than the flour burn test!

    FINALLY someone who does a Fun Efin Tastic Review... Well done and Thank you sooo very much for showing theee most important part to any review.
    Very dissappointing that breville would have such tiny heating point. I am wondering how much that unit costs.

      Hah thanks Red Knight! Yeah I usually love Breville so was super disappointed by this. It was $139 (link in the description). So far my fav is the Nationwide Electrical model reviewed recently, but I also have an Ikea one here to test, and then am yet to purchase the Westinghouse!

    Do you find it annoying not to be able to select your wanted watt straight up or by fast dial compared to repeatedly finger pressing through to the wanted function?

    • @platima
      @platima  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah bothers me a little, but you kind of form muscle memory with these things eventually. That being said, I use the NE induction cooker more than most these days

    Do any of the more expensive machines have even heating and not pulse on and off? Plus it seemed you had to play Beethhovens 2nd symphony before you got the controls to behave and lowered the heat to a simmer.

      Not that I've found, mind you, I have not tested too many yet. It would be nice, but I am not sure that's realistically possible. I definitely need to learn more!

      @@platima Ta for reply. Yes you could turn this into a business. I am looking at one of those NuWave 2 gadgets from the AS seen on TV companies. Reasonably expensive but specs seem OK. Surprised I cant see many reviews even written on them.

      @@grittsy Hah nah I've got enough sht to take up my time! This was originally just for some others I know that were curious, and now I keep getting drunk and recording my testing when I buy new appliances. Primarily driven by my love of cooking, but also need to do it in the most cost and time effective way possible!
      That being said, if some big company has a non-pulsing and ideally quiet induction cooker for me to test, I ain't saying no!

    Hey I have a cheap different brand and it makes the exact same beep sound and electric noise. The thing I dont like is the long coil on/off cycle time. The good quality full size built in cookers run a quicker cycle when on low power so can keep warm without boiling

    Can you do a video on the buttons and the features!

    • @platima
      @platima  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually should, but I took it back. The buttons were pretty basic though; wattage (pulse speed), timer, child lock, and 'presets'. Those presets were then just wattage / timer combos, as show in the manual on page 10: www.appliancesonline.com.au/public/manuals/LIC400BLK-Breville-User-Manual.pdf

    • @platima
      @platima  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gofigure_1 More time now. So, I've tested a half-dozen induction cookers these days, and MOST appliances I have are Breville, however, this one severely underperformed. In short, it cost ~$120 or something, and was beaten by a $40 unit (in another video). Not to mention that the coil is not as big as it appears to indicate, and is off centre.

      In short, as long as the saucepan is has a conductive layer, it should work. If not, faulty cooker!

      Check whether a magnet will stick to the bottom of the pot/pan, if not it may not contain ferrous metal.

    • @paula3582
      @paula3582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only works with steel and cast iron.

  • @odinshall
    @odinshall 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The noise is magnetism and while the initial heat may be off-center, there's a reason you should use a quality pan and pre-heat it properly.

      Hey thanks for the reply. I ended up testing a few of these, have just not uploaded more videos yet. A better quality pan helps, but I found this one just underperformed unfortunately.

      @@platima induction is magentism, meaning it heats up ferrous metals, aluminium isnt ferrous, you shouldnt use aluminium frying pans as it wont work properly, or so says 5 seconds of google, use full steel instead or old cast iron, it needs to be magnetic so copper and aluminium does not work

    • @platima
      @platima  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1ceYourPimpHand only really for very small steaks, or if you're using cast iron, in my opinion.
      The main issue is that the heated area is small, and inconsistent. A small steak would probably fit the small element, or if you use cast iron, it'll hold its heat well. In fact, I ALWAYS recommend cast iron for steak; just heat the oil and sear the living shit out of it. For a refrigerated ~2cm thick steak; 4 mins on one side, 2 mins on the other, seems to give a good medium rare. Room temp steak 1 min less on each side. For sous vide steak (worth it!) heat it until the oil is smoking, then each side for ~45 seconds, plus the fat cap.
      Damn, now I'm hungry.
