Ball-bashing in no way, shape or form requires greater ability/talent than the skills required to volley (both power volleys and touch volleys) accurately, chip-and-charge-to-the-net behind very deep or sharply-angled, well-placed approach shots, execute offensive underspin lobs, hit running topspin lobs, hit soft shots down the middle of the court that dip down after clearing the net to force the net player to generate all the pace on the volley and to volley up, drop shots, half-volleys, etc. Brute force, ball-bashing requires nowhere near the ability and skill to hit the above-cited shots in the game of tennis!

Justine Henin - Just inspiring. Hard work matters, size doesn't.
- I still remember her 2007 season, 1 of the best seasons ever by a tennis player. Unbelievable & almost unbeatable.
- 7 GS seems like a lot but she achieved all these wins by 25 years old when she retrired. I honestly think she could have won 12 or more slams if she kept playing.
- Backhand magic. Till date I enjoy watching her match highlights because of her grace & that shot is one of the best shots in tennis. Her serve packed quite a punch too, often 180+ Kmph.
Her fastest serve was 196kmph

Can’t agree more. Her time there were so many tier 1 and super consistent girls.
She would make a great UN Secretary General. Like Ash Barty she is extremely humble and intelligent. Chrissie is a fantastic interviewer. You can sense it with her guests in how comfortable they are.

I love Justine henin. She brought so much to the game with a great variety of shots, great rivalries and inspiring kids to this diversity. The fact that she did not dive into English speaking opportunities at the end of her career kind of made her disappear of the main-stream tennis radar but she is a real gem as a commentator in French and I bet she must be a good and engaging coach !

Justine Henin is the only player in history to have won the French Open twice without losing a set. That's not a minor achievement. Not even Chris Evert and Steffi Graf managed to do that. It's a feat few people talk about. Such a legend!
Did she do the same at the US Open 2007? I can't remember.
It's flukey, flaky clay. Let's see it happen on grass or hard court. Look at the history of players who won no other majors but won the French, like Krejčíková, Ostapenko, Gaudio, Kuerten, Kosta, Moya, Pierce, Ivanovic, Schiavone.

what do you mean by flukey flaky clay. Clay is the hardest surface to win grand slam. You naming the people also prove that clay is the hardest surface to win.
She had my favorite backhand this side of Federer. And she generated great power for someone so much smaller than the "big babes" of the day (and today). We miss players like her and Hingis who could use their wiles to win.
Such a gem of a person, miss her always at Roland Garros. Such a treat whenever I replay her matches.

Since her retirement (2nd time) I have grown to respect her more and more. Such a discreetly determined spirit to accomplish her goals. She's a pretty good sports broadcaster now (along with her tennis academy).

Her intensity was INTENSE! LOL. Loved her backhand. Again I am struck by how well spoken, thoughtful and authentic ALL of these amazing athletes embody. LOVE THIS SERIES!!

Henin is the reason why I learned to love tennis. Her game is not about fame, money, or privileges. It’s all about her goal of achieving the best of her abilities. I love her thoughts on self-belief, that she can win and be on top because she knows she has what it takes. How Justine proved that is beyond doubt. I also love her ideas on self-improvement, that together with her innate talent and determination, Justine also knows she can still make improvements on her game. That there is life after reaching your goals is the highlight of her story. Simply wow, just like her immaculate backhand, fossilised by the fact that no one else has that same game up to now.

Chris has done a good job with this program. My second episode in.
Justine Henin was my all time favorite player. I admired the way she played against such powerful women and won. I would watch her at Roland Garros and...it seemed to me that she never really hit the ball with her arm and the racket. There was a way in which she involved her whole body in one unified force brought together and concentrated then on that little ball---as if she was hitting the ball with her whole body, through the racket. Amazing. I also remember hearing her talk once in an interview, during Roland Garros, about how she had been working on improving her forehand. This was after she had won four or five grand slams and I remember thinking, wow, she's a world champion and she is STILL working on improving...
Height does matter.
Her short stature and low centre-of-gravity gave her such speed, acceleration, and BALANCE.
Combined with practically perfect technique and her all-court style, she was the tennis equivalent of a F-16 fighting falcon.
Small, but fatally versatile.
And incredible to watch.

I've watched 5 or 6 of these, and every one is a gem. JH is an understated but surprisingly intense unit. You can tell that there is a lot going on under the hood. Modest, honest, not really sweet, but tough and dependable. She reminds me of the Little Red Hen. She knows what she is about, and you'd better not "F" with her, but if you're a straight shooter, you have a friend for life. She would make a fabulous coach, and I hope she is a wonderful mother.
Chris does a GREAT job in all of these. It seems like only yesterday when she first started showing up in tennis news. How time flies.
Huge fan of hers. Her technique is just flawless. The way she hits the ball back with power and angle is amazing considering her size and playing hard hitters.
Great Im glad I watch this. Even wonderful to see my favorite tennis player Justine Henin. What a fighter she was. A day before i play tennis I watch Henin vs Dementieva 2010 Australian open. My game gets so good every time I watch her play.

25 was too young to retire. She would have won Wimbledon eventually and she would have won more than 10 slams for sure!
Loved watching her play so much. Such a credit to the game and to so much of what makes sports and competition so rewarding. It says so much about her greatness that vs. the likes of Serena and Clijsters, they had such close H2H records, but in majors, Henin had a winning record against both of them. Wish she had played at least another three years w/o the initial retirement and the final one a little later. But we still have the greatest matches to watch and all the memories of her brilliance on the court. Wonderful interview from Chris.

A great tennis player, wonderful to watch for those of us who love the game. But she seems so thoughtful, intelligent, honest and generous that she would deserve our admiration even if she had never hit a tennis ball.
That one-handed backhand! The best all court female player I have ever seen. She is like the Roger Federer of the women's game.
As great a player as Justine Henin was during her pro tennis career (which sadly was cut short by her elbow injury at Wimbledon in her match there against Clijsters), she was not as John McEnroe absurdly claimed, "the Federer of women's tennis"! Although Justine had a beautiful one-handed topspin backhand like Federer and liked to come into the net to volley (as Federer did early in his career), she never was a serve-and-volleyer ( like Federer was early in his career, until he all but abandoned that element of his game) and she didn't, proportionally-speaking, possess a big serve like Federer has to win a lot of free points in her matches because she lacked the necessary height required to possess a big serve. She did from time-to-time, like Federer, show some degree of finesse in her game with the occasional backhand drop shot. She did, like Federer, hit a lot of forehand winners against her opponents, although, obviously, not quite to the extent that he does in his matches. She also made more sloppy forehand errors in her matches than he does in his matches, or at least than he did during his dominate years on the men's tour. By contrast, however, she had a better topspin backhand than Federer because although his backhand is even more fluid than her's was, she could do more with her backhand when she would use it to open up the court by hitting sharply-angled backhands to draw her opponents wide of the court to set up a winning crosscourt forehand, which Federer rarely, if ever, does in his matches. But she never dominated women's tennis like Federer dominated men's tennis.Because of those things, overall, she was not the Federer of women's tennis, popular opinion to the contrary notwithstanding!

Apart from holding a total of 07 GSs & three times YE No. 1, she has a rarest of rare feats to have beaten both the Williams Sisters [especially when both of them were in their prime] in a same tournament/GS...👊🏻 You will always be missed Justine...😓
Justine Henin is the biggest cheater in tennis. Serena did whopped her behind at the 2010 Australian Open. Thank god. I am so happy the cheater retired for the 2nd time.

Justine and Roger, they are my heroes. Justine has the most beautiful game in my eyes. And for me, the greatest female competitor ever.
This is a great series. Chris Evert is a superb interviewer. However, the background music is utter rubbish.

Love this series, love Chris Evert and LOVE Justine Henin... BUUUUT, as a feedback for the production: take that bloody back music off! That kind of back music is good for a short video, a narration that needs to emphasize the emotional tone or the different narrative turning points, but for a full interview that lasts more than 30 minutes, it´s beyond annoying and gives a cheese sentimental feeling of what in reality is a very interesting conversation between two legends of the sport.
Wish they would have mentioned how even though she had this great rivalry with Serena, she has admitted that she was actually more scared to face Venus than she was facing Serena. I think she all but admitted she tanked the 2007 Wimbledon Semi’s because she kept thinking that if she won she’d have to face Venus in the final.
I removed that too. For her to face Venus in Wimbledon was quite challenging. But I was also shocked because she was at her prime in 2007 and was playing great tennis. Her meeting with Venus in the 2007 US open was as high as women tennis goes.

I am a nurse working at a mine.. in my small room in northern quebec... lustenihg to this truly fascinating interview from a player.... I have admit.. I wasn’t a fan of when she was on the tour. Justine was my favorite player when she was on the tour. I fell in love with Iga as I listened to her interviews (before she won the French Open). I started noticing some similarities in their appearance on the court as well. Both are problem solvers and I agree with you.
I never really liked her as a character during her playing days. But this interview just wowed me. Very humble, insightful, deep-thinking, smart and -yes - very likeable person.

I saw Justine win the Canberra International in 2001 and thought here is a player who will do well and that happened. Always a player to watch play without the tantrum behaviour when something does not go to plan and gracious, like Sam Stosur, ,something which seems to go missing with some players, then and now.
Remarkable how good she was, being an avg-sized woman in a sport that’s dominated by giant players. She was an explosive mover, though, & her shots were heavy
As the handshake after the Charleston match proves, Serena and Justine were pretty friendly at one point. Definitely a lot of respect there.
Henin for me is one of the most gifted women’s players of all time and I loved to watch her play.

@@blue_red_screen Definitely, competitive fire and her ability to play her best in the big moments. And the serve of course
She was more skilled in some ways but not so much in others. Justine never managed to win Wimbledon and was at best the fourth or fifth best hard court player of her era. She was really the best only on clay. Serena managed to dominate on all surfaces and win in both singles and doubles.
Serena has incredible versatility and is probably the best problem solver in the history of the game which is the main reason why she has stayed on top for over twenty years. She has many different play styles which she uses against different opponents and can mix it up really well. She also has fantastic hands and although her net skills have diminished quite a lot due to her movement and injuries, she was actually quite incredible at the net in her younger years. She isn’t given enough credit for her on court craftsmanship because she uses primarily a very aggressive kind of play. But she can do just about anything on court other than drop shots.
@@blue_red_screen serena is physically much superior to justine and was mentally tougher. Justine was pound for pound one of the best players ever, not to mention she retired way too early (25, had she continued without injuries, she could've had a few more).

What a champion
This is a great series and I particularly liked this interview. Justine is incredibly articulate and interesting to listen to and I can confirm what Chris Evert says: Justine is a great commentator (in French) for Roland Garros on France 2. And most importantly: it"s a shame that her style of tennis doesn't really exist any more. Bring back Justine and Francesca Schiavone to Roland Garros any day!
She Is really humble
Ash Barty is the modern day Justine Henin. Both very similar styles apart from the backhand which was just an awesome shot and both have or had lots of variety in their play. Both pack a punch with their groundstrokes despite their size. Justine should reach out to Ash at some point and give her some advice about how to cope with the big hitters and punching above her weight.
Justine, simply the Federer in woman's version !

It's a shame that Justine suffered that injured elbow in her match against Clijsters at Wimbledon because she could have achieved even more in tennis than the considerable accomplishments she did achieve during her somewhat short pro tennis career.

Listening to Henin describe her burnout and isolation speaks to why The Williams Sisters were SO impactful. They were first criticized for being part time players, missing tournaments, having personal lives, other activities, having fun at high profile events. You NEVER heard about them crying about lifestyle imbalance. It’s crazy now but that Evert-Navratilova Era of playing full time, 12 months a year and completely ignoring a personal life smdh Recipe for burnout AND unhappiness. AND not even sustainable once the tour got deeper, more competitive and more physically demanding.

I don’t care how much hate I get for this comment, but Justine played dirty. She clearly ( it’s caught on camera! ) cheated Jennifer and Serena on crucial points. Not denying for a second her talent or her brilliance, or her credentials as a champion, but she was not a player with true integrity - in my opinion.
