Band of Brothers is a 2001 American war drama miniseries based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name. It was created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who also served as executive producers, and who had collaborated on the 1998 World War II film Saving Private Ryan. Episodes first aired on HBO starting on September 9, 2001. Critically acclaimed, the series won the Emmy and Golden Globe awards for best miniseries.

I love at the end how he outranks sobel, and when sobel tries to walk by without saluting he says "you salute the rank, not the man"

Always came across as equally if not more petty than they portray Sobel to be. It bugs me how a show contrives drama by designating someone the ‘bad’ guy when Sobel in the show and real life is likely the reason the men survived and did so well.

@Billsbob not really, they could have had just as good training without toxic pettiness. And the reason easy company did so well was the leadership of winters and the other leaders, especially the NCOs
The look on Sobels face is one of the greatest "Oh f*** my bluff has been called" moments. Great acting.

In a way, it would be Winter's duty to go with the court martial if it truly was deleriliction of duty / failure to perform orders from superior. Sobel was pretending his strict by-the-book training was anything other than him being a power-mad tyrant

Well, it wasn't really bluff. It was an form of bullying which Sobel had been practicing for a long time, and Winters went to the court knowing full well he could lose the case. Sobel is shocked because he too realizes it's not an automatic win for him either.
@@Ghostiification I think it was a bit more than that. Had Winters 'taken it like a man' he would have admitted he didn't follow a direct order. I think Sobel thought he could get rid of his rival right there, and it backfired miserably.

This is by far David Schwimmer's best acting role. He understood his role and played it like a fiddle. He deserved to win a best supporting actor award.

It is often hard for actors from long-running, popular shows to get other roles later. The worry is the audience will always think of them as "that guy from..." rather than the role he/she is currently playing.

I don’t hate Sobel but I understand he’s a coward and a fucking asshole. Sobel became much worse towards the end when he realized he wasn’t fit for leading the men in actual combat and took it personally. He trained those men extremely well and they were more prepared than any other company upon entry to France. Winters lead them like he was born to.
For real, I’m pretty sure even their chain of command knew Winters was much better combat leader.
Sobel fucks up pretty badly later in the show and gets transferred to a new unit. E-company got really lucky, i would not wanna sit next to Sobel when shit hits the fan. Bet the big gents were just waiting for a right amount of fuck ups from Sobel. I should rewatch the show. Its so goddamn good

It’s hard to do any significant time in the military without running into a Sobel here and there. I got called on the carpet for not smiling at the Vice Wing Commander’s wife when she came through the front gate, then had paperwork there for me to sign. My first sergeant got wind of it, pulled me out of the Captain’s office and went in and had a shouting match with him. Came out and told me to forget the whole thing. MSgt Bither was a real one.

I know what you mean. My squad leader was a toxic rat bastard only in it for himself. He tried to bring me up on charges and NJP me after I disagreed with his form of punishment. He then made it personal and threatened me at which point, I told him that if he came near me, I was throwing him off the third deck of the barracks. Thankfully, the new platoon leader overheard the whole debacle, especially his threats, and told him to stand down. At that point, I informed the LT that I wanted to request a "Captain's Mast" and address the matter with him so I could avoid an NJP. My Captain liked me, so, he understood and was actually compassionate towards my plight when I requested transfer to a different unit. However, he told me I was a good Marine and it wouldn't be necessary. I was dismissed and as I was walking outside the COs office, I just hear the First Sergeant yell, " Sergeant, get the fuck in here!!" lol After that, never had to deal with that prick again!

He was smiling, waving, chatting it up with everyone…really putting on a show. The VWC’s wife expected that every time. But that’s not me. And 100% it would flip the other way today you are so right about that.
Yup,right before I separated I went out one night.Woke up to banging on my door,LE said I had to go see the Sgt on duty,apparently the car next to mine had a ding in the door(my passenger side).Long story short,I was detained for”leaving the scene of an accident”(the dorm parking lot??)My Flight CMSgt came down and went off on the LE Tsgt for “being a complete piece of shit and wasting his time”.The petty BS in one of the reasons I decided not to reenlist.
When the actors went through their basic training before filming. Schwimmer distanced himself from the rest of the cast as his part of getting into character of Sobel. He did a great job, along with the rest of the actors. This series is iconic.
Turns out that's Ross's grandfather was a prick.
They brought him in on day 9 ao the others were resentful
Damian Lewis did the same: He respected and honored Mr. Winters, met him and took the pre filming ("Fil-em") training seriously dispite his wicked sense of humor. Both actors were brill and Ron Livingston ( Lewis Nixon ) The entire cast was outstanding! imho
This series was brilliant back in the day. It was 8 or 9 years after Saving Private Ryan but were so similar in ways.

Winters basically called bs on that by pointing out that he doesn't have a telephone so it's impossible for Sobel to have called.
He probably called the wrong number and left a message and only realized his mistake after winters pointed out the issue. I think that’s why he seems less confident and tries to coax winters into just taking the punishment after the revelation since he knows his court marshal has no grounds whatsoever.
@@Demos_Jeff small correction, I don't mind grammar generally but this particular one is a pet peeve*, it's court martial not marshal. As in military, whereas marshal is an officer of state, although both have the same origin.
It sounds like he meant that he telephoned his department to deliver his message. But the department couldn't reach him because they couldn't telephone him because of the family he was with. Either way, it sounded like a lie or an abuse of power.

My grandfather fought in the 101st from D-day to the end of the war. He said Winters was one of the greatest men he’d ever met and by far the best leader he could ever have asked for.
When interviewed later, Schwimmer said: "I wasn't even acting, I was just being myself"

Exactly. Also a court marshal has to be overseen by a flag officer and it's pretty obvious a flag officer won't care about latrine inspections.
Winters did request a trial. Sobel issued an Article 15 which Winters has the right to appeal to court marshal which he did in this scene. Sobel literally tells him not to in this exact clip.
It's court "martial". Marshall is a law enforcement officer.

@@AnarexicSumo you're wrong. They don't care what the order was only that there was a lawful order. And they 100% care about latrine inspections. Dirty latrines are breeding grounds for disease which can make entire battalions combat ineffective. The military is huge about hygiene for this very reason.
The duty of all commanders is maintaining good order and discipline. This 100% would have gotten a court martial had it have actually been valid. They knew it wasn't because the battalion and regiment commander knew Winters was a good officer and knew Sobel wasn't. The tipping point was a bunch of NCOs stepping up and flat out refusing to follow him (which they really are lucky they weren't shot because mutiny is a capital offense)
Now a days Sobel would have been relieved following the certification lanes they were running.
Schwimmer acted his ass off in this. One of his best roles. For such a likable guy to transform into this detestable little worm... that's an actor.
Especially his expression at the end when his character realized he fucked up. David doesn't get enough credit for his role in this. What a great performance.
This is the best miniseries ive ever seen. Bought it on dvd as soon as it was available. My grandfather was with the 82nd, n they thought the 101st was the best of the best. The stories he told me... he passed away in 1991

That's because "irregardless" is not a word, but a failed attempt to sound intelligent. Language commentators have said "irregardless" is not a word as early as 1927, and that one should use "regardless" instead since it means the same thing.
Attaching an "ir-" prefix to a word that already carries a negative connotation (like regardless, which means a lack of regard or despite everything) is a double negative. That's why words like "irresponsible," "irrational," and "irrelevant" work, while "irregardless" does not. Class dismissed!

The fact Winters snatches a superior officer’s pen out of his hand as he’s using it is such a great little addition in this scene, it’s such a flagrant yet subtle display of disrespect to Sobel’s authority. But even better is the reaction from Sobel, and David Schwimmer absolutely nailed that “oh fuck he’s actually doing it” look of disbelief 😂
And that “stand before me at attention” line really just makes you hate Sobel that much more!!
Not only did he snatch the pen out of the officers hand, but he also signs his endorsement on whatever paper Sobel was holding at the time. It could’ve been anything, maybe something extremely important, but winters didn’t care.
Also, right after, Winters salutes and doesn't wait for Sobel to return the salute before he puts his arm down and leaves. Winters was like, "I'm done with you."
Even Winter had his limits.
My boss's father was part of easy company and I talked with them, when they mentioned it, I was surprised (mutiny is punishable by death, they said they thought about it but realized that if Sobel led them, they were going to die anyway)
@@IAmAFamelwhat Winters signed (While a prop for filming) was the notification of infraction. It's the sheet of paper you're handed when you eff-up. At the bottom is 2 lines, one you sign to say "Yeah, I did that" and accept the penalty, or the other line to say "Nah, not me." and push it through to a courts martial. Winters just signed the other line.
This clip doesn't show it, but when Winters first walks into this scene, he's holding the paper.
It’s so amazing that this scene is filmed perfectly. I just can’t believe that it depicts something that actually happened. Sobel really did pull off this exact stunt to get Winters in trouble. My favorite part about this show is it’s based on actual historical facts. To me, you just can’t beat a true story especially when it’s about living heroes.

@@leestockton9367exactly, in real life Sobel was a great officer and did his best to prepare his men for war. He wasn’t the coward we see in the show, however the scene where he doesn’t salute Major Winters is completely true.
Major Winters was alone in an alleyway when he passed Captain Sobel, who failed to Salute him. “You Salute the Rank not the Man, Captain Sobel” that was 100% real.
Winters signed the papers for court martial request because he knew he would win it. Not only that, but he had the backing of his NCO’s, all of whom signed a letter refusing to follow Sobel into combat. It was the perfect snub to Sobel.
It was only three NCOs and they were dismissed from the 101st for insubordination/mutiny.
The letter happened after this incident.
Snubbing Sobel probably saved the entire company.

I love the little detail of Winters allowing his military discipline to slip, i.e. having to be told to stand at Attention and taking the pencil without permission. Shows how pissed off he was over the whole thing.
Well in the military you never really stand at attention when talking to a higher ranking officer or NCO. They'll only ever tell you to stand at attention or at parade rest if you're in trouble or they are mad at you.

Officers normally don't stand at attention to one another, when an officer reminds a subordinate officer to stand at attention it usually suggests they are mad at them

I work in a hospital as an imaging tech.
I keep a journal of all of the orders I receive and the time I get those orders. When the 5hit hits the fan, I have all of the information and no one can dump the blame for their crisis on me.
The first time I whipped out my little journal was at a disciplinary hearing where a doctor claimed I took images of a patient without his orders. I read back the orders I received from the doctor. Everything is date and time stamped with no spaces between entries. It probably saved my butt.

I have always wondered: Can't you be accused of forging these journals?
R&D engineers have their journals signed daily by witnesses to avoid such accusations in patent disputes, but a regular journal can be forged quite easily. It's age can, of course, be verified by an expert but that's for legal battle not a disciplinary committee.

actually I saw way too much of ross in sobel. that almost cartoonish display of sobel was the most irritating thing of the whole series to me.
In hindsight though, that's probably entirely down to you seeing so much Ross. You'd probably feel differently if he'd been in this before Friends, I think. He really does play the perfect power tripping OCS-trained bureaucrat here.

Irregardless of how you feel, it still right there.
I have read only a few books in my life sad to say, but this man’s autobiography was one of the easiest to read and gave such insight into what it’s like to lead men into battle.
One particular part that I’ll never forget was how he said you learn “who your killers are” the men you know you can depend on to “get it done.” 🥶
This bit right here is what forced the NCOs to stand against him. What a move that turned out to be. Sobel made them into machines, but fortunately, Winters was the one that got to operate that machine when it mattered. Damn fine tandem they made and absolutely hated each other.
Winters was a natural leader who cared about his men....Sobel was a decent trainer but a terrible combat leader who would've got his men slaughtered because of a lack of intelligence

Believe the legend Sgt Hartman once said, "Because I am hard, you will not like me." Not to mention he did say under his command Easy would be the finest in the regiment. Also both Nix and Even Winters himself said his methods were effective and credited him for preparing the men.

This scene sums up *one* of the reasons recruitment and retention these days is so challenging for the services.
If you love or hate the character played by the actor, it means the actor have made hell of a job. Well done lads, I salute both of you! :)

He plays himself. From Friends to this and in other productions Schwimmer plays a whiny opinionated hypocritical D-Bag, who manifestly exhibits sadistic tendencies and when he gets called on it, he buckles like a cheap belt.

Every unit i was with had all of these kinds of characters, each playing their role majestically. The everyday military life is no joke. The formalities and tradition hopefully still intact from what i remember and was taught. Though my time to this series was 60 to 70 years difference not much changed with the politics and the games.

The part which revealed Sobel as lying was when he said that he telephoned and Winters said he was billeted with a family which had no telephone, it was a quick downhill slide from there…

I am from New England and everyone said that. I didn't realize it was such a buzz phrase until I moved south and people called me out on it.

I’m not a big fan of David Schwimmer, but he did a fantastic job with this role. Very authentic. He had the audience hating his character just as much as the men of Easy Company hated Sobel in real life. I was extremely impressed.
I swear, I think his scenes as Ross are what got him this role. All the screaming scenes Ross has in Friends were like a constant audition for this role (obviously didn’t know this was gonna be made but in a coincidental manner I think all the years of Ross yelling got the attention of casting)

Why I got out of the Navy...the military wants yes men, I didn't have it in me anymore.
No shame in that.
Why I ultimately never joined, besides issues with a few misdemeanors.
A) You're selling your body to a government that doesn't gaf if you live or die, then definitely doesn't gaf after you get out
b) having guys with inferiority and God complexes yelling at me and I have to obey them or I get punished.... I dealt with that shit enough in schools with teachers who think their students are their slaves..... Biggest headed individuals: teachers, drill instructors, and politicians!

And using it almost correctly, but still wrong.
Winters was an incredibly sharp individual. Brilliant tactician, professional, brave and lethal as all hell.
Winter's also led from the front & thats what earned him his mens respect

To be fair, the men were so well trained, the selection process so long and rigorous, any competent platoon leader would have looked like a brilliant tactician. One who had undergone the same training process? Even better.
@@samobispo1527 I definitely agree. Winters stands out in particular because he literally wrote various tactics still used today by our infantry. Every time you see a road crossing, trench clearing, etc. He improved on those tactics. Many can be trained, but it takes another level of perception to innovate. Especially given that these are methods he personally tested
I love how his head snaps back up like "oh shit, a real man doth stand before me and won't take my shit anymore"
This is the best war series ever of this time frame. I like how each episode is first started by the stories and experiences from the actual veterans these great actors are portraying. Thank you to our brave veterans.

I put one episode on and my father happened to be watching with me and he said to put the next episode after it was done (as I was gonna anyway, since we all know it's an amazing show) and we ended up watching the whole series at one go 😅

This takes me back in time. When I was a young PL, my soldiers liked me because I went green to gold and as prior enlisted knew this circus. But some officers were JUST LIKE Sobol here. 🤦🏻♂️

@@randallulrich Bitching about COs is a natural state of enlisted because they don’t know what happens behind the curtains. No matter of you’re the best PL, XO or CO, you’ll be hated for a time until you prove yourself to men. Luckily for me, I went green to gold so everyone knew me. I can’t say I was a smart or politically learned leader, but I was a decent CO hated by officers but respected by enlisted 🤷🏻♂️

My CO was an asshole universally hated by everyone under his command, from the XO on down. His reputation even bled over to other squadrons, such that if you mentioned what squadron you were from, you got a knowing, sympathetic “you poor bastard”.
I was a good officer, and I was respected by those under my command, because I respected them and took care of my men.
Rule #1 as an officer.

Man, David Schwimmer is a fantastic actor. People really only know him from friends. But he was great in the people versus OJ as well.

Many commentators are suggesting that requesting trial was a "gotcha" moment for Winters against Sobel, as if Winters knew he'd be acquitted and Sobel humiliated. I saw it differently. Winters was taking a huge risk that the trial (court martial in time of war!) could have gone against him, but he perceived his honour to be at stake, regardless of the outcome. Yes, he was angry, but he made a personal judgement that he couldn't just play safe and take this injustice sitting down, without losing his self-respect and that of the men in whom it was his task to instill courage.
Almost.
The disciplinary action (if accepted) would have stayed in his files and followed him throughout his career -- inhibiting promotions. Sobel was jealous of Winters and was trying to hold him back. Made him his attache in order to undermine his raport with the men by forcing him to find something to punish them for.
Winters took a calculated risk. 50-50 that it works in his favor versus 100% that it works against him.
Thinking of Schwimmer from Friends as Ross and then seeing him absolutely nail this role in BoB, dude is a massive talent.

There are great men in every country of the world - so what makes him the "true american" to you? For me he was WAY better then the american person you refer to.
