What is the point of this car? If the Explorer already exists, as well as the ID5, the Tesla Y, the ioniq 5, the ev6.. I could go on and on. The MG4 has sold by the bucket load because people are crying out for small decent BEVs. Also the CEO of Ford recently said people need to fall back in love with small cars... So here's another big car.
It looks like a a fat Polestar. EV skateboards allow such an opportunity for designers to make beautiful cars and this isn't one of them. I have grown up with an affection for the Ford brand name. Whilst I appreciate that the Capri of old, can't be the Capri of today, this design language is not something I could ever see on my driveway.
The Capri was basically a car that helped 20 somthing males, pull the birds (which is how we referred to young women in the 1970s and 80's). It was working class aspirational and aimed at men who couldn't afford a Porsche. Im not sure that that market segment even exists anymore. If Ford actually brough the Capri back it would only be bought by men in thier 50's and 60's who had one as a young man, the world has moved on and so has Ford, but in neither case to a better place it would seem.
yup. Had a fire-engine Red 2.0 litre 1979 Capri in the late 80s....I Loved It. Had Porsches, had nice cars...the Capri was the only car that could get you laid! Girls Loved Capris!
@@solentbum sounds like an 'interesting' girl lol. I think for any guy driving a Maxi, he probably wouldn't get the chance to use the seat for that purpose lol.
The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ fills that niche now. At least in markets outside of the UK where the carbon taxes are not so punitive against selling it. VW and Ford could make a car in that segment (rear wheel drive, small, relatively inexpensive) if they really wanted to... Why leave it up to the Japanese? 🙂
I like it, very Polstar2'ish and why not call it a Capri, life moves on, things change, get over it. Better have the name alive on the back of an EV than consigned to history.

A Ford copy of a Polestar 2 but with the VW interface rather than the Polestar’s excellent Google interface and horrible haptic controls that Polestar thank goodness does not have.
Well done for the review... Despite me not agreeing with Ford using the Capri branding on this car, I do appreciate that you accept this and review the car. So many reviewers of cars invited to manufacture launches are too afraid to give an honest review for fear of not being invited to the next launch. Another reviewer at the same launch as this, makes a point of trying to point out completely vague similarities between the Capri of the past, whereas you have made a point of saying what we all are thinking (who are old enough to remember the Capri), that this has nothing in common with the Capri... Well done for being a real journalist, rather than a puppet of the manufacturers!
It feels like Ford are just designing EVs and then rooting around in the bin for names to attach to them, *after* they're already designed. There's clearly far more Polestar 2 influence in this design than there is Capri. I get the point that they're trying to leverage their history to help compete with startups and the Chinese brands, but others (take a bow Renault) are just doing a far better job in that regard.
I see Polestar 2 vibes in the side profile. I think it looks good despite the Capri name! I wish Ford would sell this and the Explorer in the US instead of what we currently get from them! Their marketing teams don't listen to customer feedback IMHO!
This might work if it were inexpensive, but it certainly does not work at £40-50k as yet another family SUV. It does not work as a performance fun car, like the original. About the only good thing I can think of is that Ford still have a large dealer network in the UK which means you can get it looked after near where you live. I share Ginny’s disappointment.
Hmm, those shortcut icons at 9:32 are a little small for use when on-the-move; more so when the right-hand drive version arrives and you are not using your _primary_ right hand like many of us… Do like the look of it though.
The original Capri came out as the bigger brother to the Anglia in 1961(?). Someone else might remember the raked back rear window? I used the front springs, disc brakes and servo, from the early Capri on my Anglia in the late 60s. 1500cc engine, soft springs and servo disc brakes made it go like the proverbial off a shovel, and stand on its nose under very heavy braking. The Capri was never offered as a 4 door. It looks like the only resemblance to the late 60s/70s/80s Capri is the shape of the rear door/quarter-light window(s). Will this offering sell to anyone other than a Ford die-hard? Somehow I doubt it, but a few might give Jim Farley some hope of extra sales for Ford now he is a confirmed electro-head - even though he still has some petrol head leanings. I drove the 3 litre auto Capri Ghia/GT back in the early 70s. That was very quick for the day.

I'm struggling to understand where the Capri fits in the lineup against the MachE.
I am wondering that too. Concluded that the MachE is dead now they have bought into the VW platform. It is nearly exactly the same very strange.
Damn Ford is murdering their legends. Mustang and Capri .. damn..:-( That Capri is fugly!
It certainly doesn't look like a Capri in profile. It's a bit bland, which is very un-Capri.
I’m old enough to remember fantasising about owning a Capri when I “grew up”. Well now I’m all grown up…….I’ll give this a wide berth. It is FUGLY!
"Alexa, show me custard that hates itself sooooo much when it sees itself in the mirror that it vomits..."
Why are new cars so bloody big (not just EV’s), have these people seen the size of the roads and gaps they have to get through / fit into.
Everything needs to be as big as possible in America. Go to other countries and you hardly see CUVs and SUVs. It's mostly compact cars.
They are good for housing fat people with knackered knees (because they are fat)
@@shaybappleI assume you aren't familiar with UK cars?
@shaybapple this isn't a US car
Got to put the batteries somewere
This could've been an Explorer Sport or something, why use the Capri name for this
I also agree looks like a Polestar 😊
The Capri was basically a car that helped 20 somthing males, pull the birds (which is how we referred to young women in the 1970s and 80's). It was working class aspirational and aimed at men who couldn't afford a Porsche. Im not sure that that market segment even exists anymore. If Ford actually brough the Capri back it would only be bought by men in thier 50's and 60's who had one as a young man, the world has moved on and so has Ford, but in neither case to a better place it would seem.
their
yup. Had a fire-engine Red 2.0 litre 1979 Capri in the late 80s....I Loved It. Had Porsches, had nice cars...the Capri was the only car that could get you laid! Girls Loved Capris!
@@swanvictor887 A friend said she preferred the Austin Maxi, with the seats that folded down to make a bed.
I don’t see Bodie and Doyle jumping over the bonnet in this one😢
They could but would need a ladder!
They might if the charging cable is on the other side 😂
In the wake remake, it will be a fat t-wimyn Bodies and fat lez Doyle cruising leisurely at 30 mph in this Crapi
It’s a polestar with an allergy! 🤧
Ford really need to up their game in the electric space. This doesn't feel like the car to do that.
I never been good at spelling!! Is CRAPI correct??
Loved the original, had a Mk3 myself.
This is just the same old crap everyone else is churning out!!!
Fully agree, Ginny. Why is Ford doing this to its legacy? I am retired and would love to buy a proper phev or ev Capri, and I bet a lot of 20/30 somethings would too. Another opportunity lost. 😢
20/30 somethings don't buy EVs full stop.
Second hand proper looking cars is what they buy. And rightly so.
That's a frikkin polestar 2 - surely they can't get away with that !?
In profile it looks more like a Polestar 2 than a Capri.
Forget the name, it actually looks rather nice.
No
True it should have been called a Granada or Consul or something like that!
or Cortina, Sierra, even Mondeo.....
A Ford copy of a Polestar 2 but with the VW interface rather than the Polestar’s excellent Google interface and horrible haptic controls that Polestar thank goodness does not have.
Its like a podgy 'who ate all the pies' Polestar 2. Just naff.
The side profile looks like a Polestar 2. This really isn’t a Capri 😢
That’s a Polestar, surely…
I was never a FORD FAN,but this is actually one I'd be very happy to own...yes it's similar to the Polestar 2 but I also love that car too
Yup, is does look like a Capri from the distance. I’m in the UK, is that far enough away 😂
So similar to the polestar 2
Currently looking at it from the moon I still don't see it
Well done for the review...
Well done for being a real journalist, rather than a puppet of the manufacturers!
i actually think it's look good. but nothing to do with the old capri. and these old names being used to new cars doesnt make much sense
It doesn't look even good.
the haptic buttons are 1 of the best things about VW cars. I really don't understand why people don't like them
That’s a Polestar!
No Frunk!? The front and bonnet is huge! What is under there?
Looks like a swollen Polestar copy.
Over £40k. It's a nope from me...
How secret a locker is a secret locker when every car reviewer mentions it?
Looks like a blown up Polestar. One tire is already larger and heavier than a whole Capri
The polestar looks more like a Capri than this from the distance
It feels like Ford are just designing EVs and then rooting around in the bin for names to attach to them, *after* they're already designed. There's clearly far more Polestar 2 influence in this design than there is Capri. I get the point that they're trying to leverage their history to help compete with startups and the Chinese brands, but others (take a bow Renault) are just doing a far better job in that regard.
No no no wtf are ford thinking
I see Polestar 2 vibes in the side profile. I think it looks good despite the Capri name! I wish Ford would sell this and the Explorer in the US instead of what we currently get from them! Their marketing teams don't listen to customer feedback IMHO!
This might work if it were inexpensive, but it certainly does not work at £40-50k as yet another family SUV. It does not work as a performance fun car, like the original. About the only good thing I can think of is that Ford still have a large dealer network in the UK which means you can get it looked after near where you live. I share Ginny’s disappointment.
For gods sake not Another SUV 😩😤
Polestar will sue Ford for this
So... from the side they made a Polestar 2 SUV! As with the Explorer my reaction is... Meh.
It's an SUV, more closely related to a Transit van than an old Capri.
Hmm, those shortcut icons at 9:32 are a little small for use when on-the-move; more so when the right-hand drive version arrives and you are not using your _primary_ right hand like many of us…
Do like the look of it though.
If anything it looks like a polestar
The styling kinda reminds me of a taller polestar 2 from the side, but a little more lower rent.
I see a Polestar 2…
That ford volkswagon sure looks like a polestar 😂
